  1. The Master (2012)
    Director - Paul Thomas Anderson
    137 Min; R
    Cast
    Joaquin Phoenix - Freddie Quell
Philip Seymour Hoffman - Lancaster Dodd
    Amy Adams - Peggy Dodd

A year or two ago I would have wanted to write a long review of this film, but I find it more and more difficult to give these the time they deserve. Instead, I'll just say that I found this film, with some of my favorite actors under the direction of one of my favorite directors, to be an enjoyable journey. I liked the first act set up, the second act depth, and the third act ambiguity. I have a whole lot of praise for much of this film and that is the most important thing I can convey. I did, however, feel it left quite a bit to the imagination in terms of some of the deeper meanings of it all, and to be honest, that's just fine with me. I don't need everything laid out on a platter for me nor do I need to know who this 'master' was in his younger days and how he came to be who he is today. I also don't care to go into any Scientology comparisons - clearly they are there and clearly it shouldn't matter in terms of watching the movie. Hoffman is always great and I think he is once again perfect here. Amy Adams plays a wonderful supporting role as the wife. It is Phoenix who puts in a pretty great performance as a man struggling with his emotions who may or may not want the help of someone powerful to get his life on track. Anderson has directed some of my favorite films of all time and though this one won't rank next to those in my mind, it is a refreshingly dramatic film at a time when the 2012 year has been anything but stellar.

    **** and 1/2 out of 5

    End Of Watch (2012)
    Director - David Ayer
    109 Min; R
    Cast
    Jake Gyllenhaal - Brian Taylor
    Michael Pena - Mike Zavala
    Anna Kendrick - Janet
    Natalie Martinez - Gabby

Another cop movie set in the streets of south central LA. Most thankfully this film brings a lot more to the table than just a piecing together of various other films from the genre. In the most basic terms, this is a bro-movie. Taylor and Zavala are partners who have a friendship as strong as kin and a moral code that leads them everyday through the rough streets and back to their significant others. Much of the film is seen through the lenses of various people filming themselves and others around them, for various reasons, and at times the shaky cam and reasons it is happening can be distracting. The incredible amount of unlikely situations these two find themselves in is also a bit far fetching and leaves you wondering why just two or even three incredibly awful crimes wasn't enough for us to see what these two go through. If you don't like profanity, stay away. I'm not sure I recall a film in recent memory with so much foul language, but I liked the way it was used as is made everyone in the film feel pretty authentic. The basic plot is easily unspoiled, as these two partners patrol the streets and we get a glimpse of their friendship and relationships as they stumble upon and get mixed up in some Mexican cartel crimes. What the film ultimately gives us is a friendship and the two men who give 100% to their jobs which, everyday, could easily kill them.

    **** and 1/2 out of 5

  2. This just solidifies what I was expecting from these movies. Definitely looking forward to seeing them and appreciate the reviews as always skeeze.

  3. Fuck the police
  4. skeeze what did you think about lawless...i loved it
  5. I am on a life long ban of Shia Labouef movies. I hate him, thus I cannot possibly enjoy any movie he is in again, ever, no matter what.

  6. i havent seen either of these movies, but considering you gave them both almost perfect scores, I question your ability to rate movies lol

what movie would you personally give a 5 out of 5 just so i can get a basis for comparison

what are your top 10 movies?
  7. I saw The Master today and found it to be a snoozefest. This coming from a guy who really enjoyed Drive.

Doubt I'm going to get into an e-fight about what constitutes a 'good movie' - Ratings are stupid in general but they let people know in quick generic terms what level of a movie it is... etc... Just because I give movie A a 5/5 and Movie B a 4.5/5 doesn't mean I can't like them both as really good movies... or a 2/5 and a 3/5 - I mean, what's really the difference?

I don't write reviews and give them a ranking based on where it would fall into my all time favorite movie list... that's just silly and insane to think in those terms. There could be 10 movies I see this year that I think are 5/5 but that doesn't mean any of them are on my top 100 list, etc...

I do appreciate you prefacing your comment by letting me know you haven't seen either, so your opinion is invalid anyway.

  9. dude, i dont have an opinion. im not trying to fight, or argue. im trying to ask because im interested. you say a movie got 4.5 out of 5, which is obviously a really good rating, and because you gave both such high reviews, it makes me wonder if its a coincidence that 2 amazing movies came out at the same time, or if maybe youre just not being critical enough lol. i let you know i hadnt seen either because i was attempting to point out that i wasnt arguing with you

thanks for telling me that my interest in your opinion was invalid. i will no longer make the mistake of being interested in what you think. i apologize for being so rude

Been in a crappy mood today. My bad. I get a little pissy sometimes because I forget not everyone knows my tastes and the way I think in terms of what is 'good' and 'not good' - It's easy for me to understand why I am trying to say see or don't see a film because I know what I think, but people on here may only see one or two or none of my other reviews so they have no way to compare against their own ideas.

Not sure what I'm trying to say... I saw about 50 new releases in 2011 and here were my favorite 20 by release date order:

    Cave of Forgotten Dreams
    Jane Eyre
    Midnight In Paris
    The Tree of Life
    Another Earth
    Harry Potter
    The Guard
    Drive
    Moneyball
    The Debt
    Contagion
    The Descendants
    Margin Call
    Martha Marcy May Marlene
    Shame
    Hugo
    Take Shelter
    Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
    The Artist

I clearly don't enjoy too many blockbuster films or simple action movies, but that doesn't mean I don't like some of them from time to time.. I think when they are done well they can be good, but they generally aren't done well for what I enjoy in a movie.

I liked both of these movies, especially compared to the way this year has sucked for movies. Refreshing. I understand why some people won't like The Master... perhaps people who didn't like There Will Be Blood? Not sure how to not enjoy a movie with Hoffman and Phoenix being awesome at what they are doing to be honest. End of Watch is a solid cop movie with a few too many ridiculous scenarios for these two to end up in... Still very well done.

  11. you watch a lot of new movies. im past the age where going to movies with friends is that common, and i don't have a girlfriend so i dont get dragged to a bunch of flicks i dont wanna see. i end up seeing a shit ton of movies on tv. im about 5 years behind though. the last movies i saw in theatre were the raid: redemption and the babysitter lol

I'm really jealous of this, I went into that movie completely blind other than someone telling me I needed to watch it and it blew me away. I started it super late at night figuring I'd watch it for 20 minutes then go to bed, clearly couldnt turn it off and then I was up for another hour just in shock of how bad ass it was... would probably drive an hour to be able to watch it in a theatre.

skeeze I didnt see comsmopolis on your list from this year, I'm curious if you haven't seen it or didn't like it. It was hard to follow at times but the dialogue in the last 45 minutes puts it in my top 50 for sure, It's rare when a movie can put you on the edge of your seat when nothing is really happening.
  13. why are you jealous that i saw it in theatre? cause you only got to see it on dvd or something? I thought it was pretty rad, but oddly my buddy who is a professional editor/film buff didn't like it that much, and his best friend obviously just sorta agreed with him, leaving me feeling like some sort of retard for liking a movie that was critically acclaimed lol. theres a really awesome claymation video of the raid on youtube

Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce steal the show...really doing yourself a disservice by not seeing this movie. Shia's role isn't a huge one
  15. la boof!
  16. both of these movies were very good...interesting to me that the master has like 86% on rottentomatoes but only like 68% of audiences like it...i must be getting old bc i have a feeling i would have hated a movie like this when i was younger...a few people actually walked out of the master halfway through it..i think i want to see it again lol

i got a little sick to my stomach during end of watch in the beginning with all the shaky cameras but it was fine after like 10-15 minutes...it was a little far fetched that the most ghetto ruthless killers ever would be driving around with 1 of them holding a little video camera recording everything they do, but i still thought it was pretty cool and the 2 main characters acted their asses off in this movie

i agree that Shia Labouef is 1 of the biggest douchebags in the universe, but lawless was pretty sweet and def a movie worth seeing imo
  17. maybe they walked out of the master cause they were scientologists

There's almost no chance this movie isn't a snoozer just like TWBB. Drive was a pretty interesting movie, great soundtrack too.

This is not necessarily true. The character development of Shia's character is probably the most important part of the film. Imo.

Same here. He becomes a bigger douche with every breath he takes.

Movies are my favorite relaxation - I see probably 70-80% of all new releases that come out - I even enjoy the bad ones if that makes sense. When you are in sales, the concept of turning the lights out and no one is allowed to talk for a couple of hours is very appealing to me.

I saw Lawless - it was ok, but clearly the movie was carried by Tom Hardy who in my opinion is extremely dynamic in his capacity to bring his characters to life in the movie goers minds. As for La Douche, even aside from my personal disdain for him, he was just awful in this film. I literally left there wondering how much better the film could have been without his portrayal of the character he played - he so overacted in this film that it offended me and left me feeling badly for the overall image of the film which was tainted by his lack of talent.
