What do you guys think about "the end of the world" Have just started to read about it. Kinda seems like a lot of BS but there are some things that make it seem possible. Thoughts?
edit.. should have phrased the end.... some things that make some of it possible. such as major storms, hurricanes etc. I do not believe that it is possible for this to be the end of the world.

thanks for coming out...

we are doomed.

Alright, it's free advice time.
If you want to know how to improve your next thread, follow these simple guidelines:
1. "2012" is not a good thread title for this. You could go with "December 21, 2012 - what are your thoughts?", although I would suggest not, because...
2. This topic has been done to death in OT. Now, I'm not the repost police, friend. But simply asking for people to post about a topic that has less tread on the tires than Jenna Jameson, it's important for you to...
3. Bring something to the table. You basically said, "I heard about this thing, could happen, could not, Thoughts?" That, frankly, sucks shit. If your gonna post threads, contribute something. A novel opinion, a new angle, hell, even some interesting links. That way, people will remember you, and you won't have to...
4. Post your username as your signature, which is a surefire way to draw OT's ire. See also: pickup_styx.
The moral of this story is to spend more time reading OT threads to get a better idea of the standards we hold here for post creation, thread creation, and overall excellence. In other words, LURK MOAR. -
love MS

Could someone please sticky this to the top of OT?

I love MS too. He rocks.

Mr Magnet Steve.
Thank you for your great advice.
1) I figure 2012 is a fine tilte for this thread. If the first thought of someone reading the title is not " the end of the world" than they probably do not have a lot of knowledge on the subject. If I were posting about a lessor known event prediction( lets say that there a topic like : there will be snow in Florida in July 2009" than I would agree that the date would not be sufficient as a thread title.
2) You say you are not the repost police but yet you are commenting on a repost. ok than. As you may know since you obviously spend a lot of time on this site the seacrh features are not exactly great. i guess I could look through thousands of pages to find the topic. That would proabably make the most sense.
3) Yes you are right here. I did not add anything to the topic. To be honest I would not hav a lot to add at this point as I have just started to read a little about it. Which is proabably the reason I posted the topic asking people what they thought, you know so I could learn about the subject and peoples thoughts.
3/4) My goal of the post was not to get you to remember me. Not everyone's life long dream is to have an internet forum community remember who they are. And yes for the most part I am a lurker. However I do not read the forums everyday and remember every topic that has been done. Apparantly you do, so congrats.
Again thank you for your advice. I really hope my next post has your approval.

Great advice, Steve.
For example, look at what skeeze did earlier. I swear I thought it was copy & pasted from CollegeHumor at first, it was done so well:

I can't help but notice the sarcasm in your post. You should know that, in general, sarcasm is acceptable in OT, but when you are the inexperienced poster, or "n00b", you should tread lightly here until you really get comfortable with both your online "tone" and your online "presence".

AMR999
1.) Far be it from me to give advice on how to get more people to read your thoughts (or lack thereof) on a subject. A lot of things will be happening in 2012: a presidential election, the London Olympics, and yes, the possible destruction and/or liberation of the human condition. Some one expecting a treatise on, say, even four digit numbers whose digits total 5 might be disappointed, and the uninformed people would skip right over your thread, perhaps depriving them of lifesaving information in case of Armageddon. Could you live with that on your conscience?
2.) The Repost Police would ransack your thread (without a warrant BTW), plant gay porn on your hard drive, and send you to the Internet Prison 2+2. I simply pointed out that the topic has been talked about before (and common sense would tell you this if you believe it is an important topic). That doesn't mean you can't post, but not having an opinion in the thread makes the Repost Police itchy... Black Man Driving an Escalade in Orange County itchy. If you can't accept a little constructive criticism, you won't last a day at Supermax 2+2.
3.) If you have nothing to add, why even bother posting the topic on a poker message board first? Wouldn't your time be spent better reading more about the phenomenon, forming an opinion, THEN coming back and posting your great theory about how the Mayans were the smartest people ever, despite not knowing how to not get conquered by the Spanish? You would learn much better about the subject on sites devoted to it, then come back and regale us with your knowledge. That's what separates the quality posters from the "GTFO" brigade.
4.) Congratulations, you are a lurker. I am a veteran. So what? My advice goes for everyone, even that handsome devil emcee21. If you're goal is not to be known, then I ESPECIALLY suggest removing your signature. If you notice, your post is already marked with your username. Posting it again explicitly states your desire for people to know who you are, and not in a "Please accept me, I'm cool!" way, but a "I am so arrogant that I think you need to see my name TWICE in the span of 4 inches!" Further, your not-so-veiled shot at older posters will not do much to ingratiate you to the OT Ruling Elite. Many of us know each other IRL (that's 'Nettese for "In Real Life"), we enjoy each other's company, and we treat OT as an extension of our community... things you would know if you would simply LURK MOAR.
Understand, I hold no ill will towards you. I simply want you to have better success in your next thread, and in your posting time here at Off Topic. However, further bouts of pouty defensiveness (known on the Nets as "butthurt") will change that opinion, and cause most members here, regular and lurker alike, to write you off as a 16-year-old Emo kid who lacks the necessary life skills to succeed in business, relationships, and life in general. I apologize if this seems overly harsh, but no deviant behavior was ever corrected with coddling.
Your loyal servant,
(See top of post) -
and that's why MS is SFsecksy

Magnet,
Yes there was some sarcasm in my post. Was not meant to be a attack on you however.
1) After reading this point I must say that you are correct, there will be a lot of things happening in 2012. A better topic heading could have been made. Although I think "Some one expecting a treatise on, say, even four digit numbers whose digits total 5 might be disappointed, " might be taking it a little to far. As far as the election and olympics you have a point.
2) Don't think I assumed there had never been a post on the topic before. I did not feel like strolling through pages of topics to find it. I already stated that you were correct in saying I did not add any thoughts. I do not know a lot about the sunject. I have read P5's for a long time and apprciate and respect a lot of the posters opinions on this site. As far as criticism.....I can take it as you can see. I have no problem admitting when I am wrong or accepting I could have approched things a different way. I know enough about OT to realize there will be a lot of it. Especially if you are new or "nOOb"
3) Yes I did not add any value to the post. I was hoping to get some ideas on what area might be best to research, what parts OT posters thought might be the most important etc. Which is why I asked for opinions. There are a lot of posts on here that can be answered by a simple google search, but people still ask them....even more experienced posters do this.
4) As far as my name on the end of my post. This is not something I thought about before writing it. I did not sit there and say to myself " Oh please I hope they all see my name and think I am cool" I put my name on the bottom of every letter, note, etc. It is a habit. If it is not "accepted" in OT you know what fine, I can adapt. As far as taking any shots against "older posters" it was not my intention. I respect most of the regulars on this site. They having giving me countless hours of laughter and solid reading material.
I am not 16, and I am very comfortable with my life skills. I am not a perfect poster, I am not perfect at anything. If I fit in on this site and contribute more than I have so be it, that would be great. If not, well life goes on my friend and I can honestly state that I would not lose one bit of sleep over it.
Having said all that again I will agree that my post was poorly put together, I will accept that it is not "cool" to put your name at the bottom of your post and I will accept the advice in your post as honest advice from a long time poster. ( although the sarcasm in your response was evident)
All the best Sir
Thanks -
Dear lord, MS is amazing
-
lol, amr, you suck at this. take note of how magnet steve is amusing, yet informative. then, take note of how you just ramble on and its not interesting at all. see what you can do about that.
-
First, I enjoyed MS's tirade(for lack of a better word). Then, I was actually impressed with the noobs rebuttal, as it was to the point and made some fair points. After that, MS responded with another gem, putting him up 2-1.
Overall, I think most people should go with MS's original advice and hope that it resonates through the ranks of the noobz.

Digthatfunk,
Thank you for your opinion of :you suck at this" It added a lot.
And I agree that MS's post were amusing and informative. I never said otherwise. I am actually very impressed with a lot of his points. I just felt they could have been presented a little different in his original response.
Conisdering your reply was so well thought out maybe you can teach me a few things:)
And just so you know I am pretty much agreeing with your comment. And I have no problem with criticism and was never really trying to "battle" any one. -
even though you were not trying to battle I think you put up a good fight
