  1. I want to do the Sears Tower stairs this fall, anyone out there have any experience with these kinds of things? I've been slowly getting back in shape for the last 8 months or so, but I'm just starting working on stairs.

just did a 53-story climb last weekend here in dallas. some guys from my dept ran in our ff gear with boots and air packs, so it was a little different than just running the stairs in workout gear and tennis shoes. i would suggest jogging for sure, but also stadium steps or some other type of stairs. we've been training on a 6-story tower since october so we had a little taste of the climb but on that you at least get to kind of rest on your way down those 6. totally different ballgame with 20+ floors. there's no rest - it's allllll up! i'll try to get my video up soon and can answer any other q's you might have.

  3. 10k in the books! official time was 43:55 (7:04 min/mi) with a 5k split of 21:17. my opening mile was like 6:05 and i paid for it over the next 2 or so miles. it was fun though.

  4. nice scd! sounds like those kayanos are getting put to good use!

Dank -- let me know what kind of training you do, I am thinking of doing stairs to train for my uphill race, if my freaking back will ever get better.

  5. I mentioned this in the workout thread but i need to mention it here for advice.

Went running yesterday down by the beach. Since it was nice as shit, i did it shirtless. I ran 6 miles, but around the 4.5 mile mark i started to rash up around the back of my armpit. I have a little rash there now thats annoying, but how do i prevent this in the future?

Guys at work use this to prevent rashes with their wetsuits. Bodyglide. Vaseline works also.

  8. ^ what wanta said. I have never had any issues under my arms, but on 5+ runs I will get bad nipple rash if I don't prepare, and for 7-8+ I will sometimes get crotch rash if I don't prepare. They make special shirts and shorts to prevent both of these, but I hear no matter what you do rashes can get really bad for full marathoners. They pretty much have to lube up their sack area and other areas to prevent it. I have heard stories of people at water stops who will hand off globs of lube to runners as they pass by. Shit is gross but prob better than crotch rash, that shit is so uncomfortable.

My back is feeling better these days, no more pain per se just a little soreness. If all goes well I will start doing some stationary bike work next week to ease back in and hopefully in 2 weeks I will be running again.

The good news is, my primary goal for the 1st quarter of the the year has been to cut some weight and get down to 200 and run all my races at or below 200 this year. I have lost 12 lbs since Jan 1 and I am 17 lbs down from my race weight for the half i did back in Nov. I somehow have managed this while being out of commission for the last month with these back problems. I am at 210 now, so only 10 lbs to go and my first race isnt until July, so I'm pretty stoked about my progress all things considered. I will have my work cut out for me getting back on the grind having been sedentary the last month, but I feel like cutting this weight will be the single most important factor in reaching my time goals this year.

Hope everyone else is kicking ass this week!

I signed up for the Illinois Half at the end of April. Grad school is kicking my ass, and so I've done very little training since the Chicago Marathon. I;ve gained like 20 pounds since the race. Started training 2.5 weeks ago, and i'ts actually been rather surprising how in shape I still am. My muscles are still in pretty good shape. So, I've been able to hit it hard. Dropped 2 lbs the first week and three in the last 1.5, well on track to get back down to my Oct raceweight. Which itself was still 15 pounds to much for me, but that's ok, I was just looking to finish, not run some super stellar time.

I am 217 right now. 203 is the target.

After this race tho, there will be no stopping. I have to get down to 185. Its been prolly 7 years since I was at that optimal weight. Need to get there again!
  12. 3.32 mi Run in Arlington on Mar 31, 2012 8:50 AM
    MapMyRUN Workout(Run / Jog:Regular / General) : Distance 3.32 mi, Duration 21:22, Pace 6:28, Speed 9.3 mi/h

    Split Time Distance Pace (avg)
    1 00:06:10 1.0 mi 06:09
    2 00:06:45 1.0 mi 06:34
    3 00:06:45 1.0 mi 06:43
    4 00:01:45 0.2 mi 07:06

ran around texas rangers ballpark and cowboys stadium. this time around, i started right at the front so i had to do a whole lot less dodging and passing of slow joggers that pushed their way to the front than my last one. the official results show my actual finish place was 8th, but i gotta think that's where i physically finished. someone who started 5 minutes after me could have been right behind me in 9th so i think i should go way down on the list. but only one person passed me up, so that was a good feeling. i still feel like i died on my 3rd mile. as you can see above, the course was longer than a true 5k. my pace was just about 20 minutes/5k, which is my short-term goal. hopefully my next run will be on a certified course and i can see about hitting that.

  13. So, looks like I am not in the race anymore.

On Sunday, I had to go for an emergency appendectomy. The surgery means I cant run the race in a few weeks time. Blech.
  14. Where'd you get it done??

They do the three small incisions? Heals pretty fast
  15. Tough Mudder yesterday, there's not one part of me that's not in pain right now

damn i just checked the website and it looks like today and tomorrow are the dates for dallas. bummed out right now because that looks awesome! i think i'll be doing a warrior dash in 3 weeks with some coworkers (http://warriordash.com/register2012_north_texas.php#) which looks like a scaled down version of the tough mudder at only a 5k distance.

ran again today. 20:33 for a 5k. got a first place medal for the "clydesdale" division, which is 200+ lbs. my age group winner rain somewhere in the 18-19 mins range. my first mile was around the 5:50 mark, so it's coming down slowly.

anyway, get your butts in gear so i'm not the only one posting!!! still thinking about a half marathon next sunday, but we will see how the week goes and if my body feels up to it.

  19. Just started running after not exercising at all since high school (I'm now 22). Went from not being able to run for more than a minute straight, which is absolutely pathetic, to being able to run two or so miles a few days every week. Still pretty pathetic but it's a start. I'm hoping to build it up to being able to run a half marathon with a co-worker in a bit over a half a year, but I think that may be too steep of a goal.
  20. Ran a half a mile the other day lol.

First time I tried running since I fucked up my ankle in the beginning of march. Shit still hurts. FML

if you can run 2 miles without stopping, you can be ready for a half in 12 weeks fairly easily. here is a good starting program if you're interested:

    http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51...aining-Program

You may need to build up a little more distance before starting this, as your first long run will be 4m. If I were you I would keep running 2-3 times a week at your current distance except pick one day as your longer run and add 10% distance to that day's run each week until you can run a 5k without stopping. then start week 1, or keep running on that schedule and start week 1 12 weeks prior to your race date

FYI you dont have to stick to this 100%, its ok to skip a day or 2 here and there or alter the schedule a bit, as long as you are getting your long runs in each week. Invest in some good shoes, make sure to get your feet and pronation measured so you can get a shoe that matches your feet/gait. gl and keep us posted on your progress.

  22. I ran 3.8 miles yesterday in 33.5 minutes. I'm not sure what that comes out to, but I was stoked as that was the first time since injuring my knee in January that I was able to run on the ground. My gym was closed, so I decided to give it a shot and did the entire thing pain free. Looks like I can start planning to do a 5k again!
  23. working my way back up to 8-milers. Broke my collar bone last fall (really bad), then got in a car accident in Dec (rear-ended/Back pain). Been hitting the pavement pretty steady for last month. Running 5's on my long days and 3's on the short. Going to step up to 6's twice/week and 4's 3x starting next week. Should be there by June,
  24. How do you best use one of these training programs if you're doing something like playing on a soccer team as well? I play either one or two games a week, usually on wed or wed/thurs. I am not in very good shape but can probably run two miles without stopping....goal is to run the entire army 10 miler by October without walking. I've done the race the past two years but walked probably 3-4 miles of it each time.

    Thanks

I don't want to talk about my training. lol. Maybe in a few months when I can run more than five minutes at 10 min mile pace without stopping.

My plan is to run a 5k sub 30 by October. maybe a Halloween one, so the weather is cool.
  26. I ran to work this morning (7.8km according to Google Maps) in 44 minutes

Do you have any practices in addition to your games? If you are only playing 1-2 days per week, make those your cross training days. When I say CT I include his "stretch/strengthen" days, which I lump into CT. My CT days are usually tai chi or racquetball, and/or free wieghts, each of which I always stretch before (fwiw I find stretching important as a part of your weekly regiment, but not terribly important before or after your runs). But soccer would be great CT as well. The main thing is to get your rest day in for sure, its easy (especially in the beginning when you are really motivated) to overdo it. This could lead to injury and/or could prevent muscle growth/development. Ironically there is no rest day after your long run days but this is by design. It should come before, and you should be doing a recovery run the day after your long run. Once you start adding miles, those 3-4m runs will be a piece of cake and will seem like rest compared to your 10+ runs. All the research out there indicates these day after runs are important for recovery and muscle development. Plus they will save you a good bit of pain and soreness. One of the best things I did (by accident) after my first half was going to vegas the day after. I wanted to treat myself to a vacation for completing the race. I spent a week there and as you know you tend to walk a lot around the strip. I probably walked 20-30 miles in the next several days after running the race and I think it saved me a lot of soreness and helped muscle recovery. I was hurting for about 24 hrs after it but by the next evening I felt great. If I had gone back to work and sat at a computer all day I probably would’ve been hurting for days.

Fwiw the program I linked is a good starting one but by no means is the only one out there. Do some google research and find on that fits your schedule. Also you can change the days around. Most programs always put your long run days on a Saturday or Sunday because typically those are the days races are held, and when most people have free time. There are by no means set in stone, just guidelines.

Just post itt with any questions you have, if you can already run 2+ at a time and are playing soccer, you can easily get to 10+ in a few months. Its tougher for guys like dolphin (and me when I started) who can only run a short distance before tiring. The early stages of conditioning are way harder than the later stages imo. It becomes more psychological at that point. GL!

  28. Gonna be running a good amount this summer. I found this amazing trail literally a 5 minute jog from my house that is about a 2 mile loop through trees/around a lake/around a long river. The route I took Saturday is probably about a 6 mile total run round trip the app I used to track distance was all messed up (said I went like 22 miles) so I need to find a better one (anyone have a suggestion?)

Can't believe I've lived in my house 3 years and never explored this area it's awesome. I may even get a bike and explore further down sometime.
