  1. Tomorrow they will be voting on the hosts of the next 2 FIFA World Cups, 2014 has already been awarded to Brazil.

    The finalists for 2018 are:

    Belgium
    Holland
    Spain/Portugal
    Russia
    England

    The finalists for 2022 are:

    Australia
    South Korea
    Japan
    Qatar
    United States

I think that Belgium and Holland are going to get eliminated almost immediately for the 2018 bid, during the first round of voting. They simply don't match up to the other candidates. I think its eventually going to come down to Russia or England, with England getting the nod. They've had a truly screwy bid over the past few months/years, but somehow I think it works out for them. They've got all of the infrastructure already, and haven't had the World Cup since '66 -- since 2010 and 2014 both went to countries that were more on the 'developing' side, England fits the bill on the other side of the spectrum.

As for 2022, I think it has to be the US. Korea and Japan joint hosted the tournament just 8 years ago, and can't imagine that they would send it back again so quickly. From what I've heard Australia hasn't put together a great bid, leaving the US and Qatar as the two most likely choices. I think the US are the heavy favorites, but if you're going to give the tournament to a country like Qatar that needs to prepare, why not do it 12 years before it will actually take place? It would also be pretty huge for the Middle East to host the tournament, just as it was for Africa.

Really hoping it goes to the US, I was only 8 and didn't really appreciate the '94 tournament, and I expect soccer will have evolved so immensely in 2022 that it would be a fantastic tournament.

    Thoughts?

  2. I think Qatar gets it in 2022. It would be great if we got it, but that region (the MIddle East) hasnt had a showcase for anything positive (maybe for good reason) like the WC can provide. I think thats the deciding factor. I hope it doesnt happen, just my thoughts on it.

England in 2018 would be fucking awesome, though I thought Spain/Portugal were very much in the running if not ahead...
  3. USAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA oneeeeeeeeee timeeeeeeeeee~!!!!!
  4. Quick google for odds sees England as 5/4 favourites for the 2018 bid and Qatar 4/6 favourites for 2022 with USA @ 5/2.

I'll likely be back in the UK in 2018 so from a personal point of view I'd like to see England get that one, and everyone knows how good a job the USA would do with it, especially with the experience of 94. Obviously can't make plans 12 years ahead of time, but i'd be much more likely to go to it in the states than in Qatar.

I think 2018 is a 3 horse race between the Iberians, Russia, and England. I think England might even be a little behind at this point, but a part of me just feels like they're going to get it.

  7. U.S. is a money maker, and as i have read, and we all know there is so much diversity here. It was a great tourney 16 years ago, and would make for an even better one if we secure the bid for the 2022 tourney as well. what does qatar have for it besides its never been in the middle east before? its fucking hot there, their team sucks, they have to build a whole bunch of shit still. you have to remember these arent a bunch of free spirit hippys that vote. there is alot of politics involved in this, and thats where i think we raise the bar.
  8. Qatar for the win. Authoritarian Regimes are the best host.
  9. Qatar AVERAGES like 110 degrees in the World Cup months and I read it can sometimes get up to like 120-130F. Wow that would be enjoyable...

I think this, more or less, will be the reason why the US shines through. The us could host an A+ world cup next week if they wanted to due to all of the stadiums we have available. We're an incredibly diverse country, and would surely be one of, if not the most profitable local available.

As I mentioned earlier though, if the US could host one on a weeks notice... why give them one where they have 12 years to prepare? The lure of a 'legacy' cup like South Africa may be too intriguing.

They said they can air condition the new stadiums, so that likely wouldn't be a problem for the players... but you'd still have millions of tourists sweating their assess off.

  24. It sounds like the 2022 Cup will be alcohol free.

  25. really sucks that we didnt get 2018. they were saying that we went out in the first round of voting before the announcement
  26. loooooooooooooool @ wiki

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar

#1 - it already mentions 2022 world cup hosts.

#2 - "In 1991, Qatar sucked major weiner. They are all homosexuals."
  27. us made a tactical error althought it was prob the right decision.. i think england had it till they got caught up in the bribing scandal.. if we had kept our bid, with england being penalized i think we woulda scored that one.. either way this sucks
  28. QATAR?! How do they not Pick Japan or the USA, places that would make it beyond awesome. Now I remember why FIFA sucks so much
  29. its because of the corruption and politics simple as that. how could you not see that the US is the best place to put a world cup.. or even england for the 18.. i will go to russia, but i can guarantee im not going to qatar. that just sounds like it would suck to be there for a couple weeks.
  30. Ya FIFA is known to be corrupt as hell, but out of all the choices for 2022, this was the worst. Even Australia would have been awesome.
