  1. I played, and beat, my first Chess Master tonight in a G/90m. He was a lifetime Master, though probably not quite in his prime. I think he peaked around 2350 or so. I wish I could say that I outplayed him in a complicated middle game, but I would be lying. He blundered pretty early and I was able to find the moves to keep the edge and turn it into a win.

I know, no one cares. Only nerds play chess ....etc...

  2. pgn or it didn't happen
  3. he was prob drunk and on tilt
  4. you can put your moves in a player and post it...right?

  5. His roommate probably log onto his computer and made bets under his name and decided to fuck up his rating.

No really tho that's Fucking awesome. Chess is the greatest board game of all time.
  6. I am not a chess guy, but if you beat a chessmaster, even if he played bad....then pretty impressive in my book

Seriously this. Post it. Did you put the comp in a closed position and grind him to death? I'm assuming the comp didn't blunder a queen. Would love to see the game.

I take it you don't consider Crossfire a board game?

Edit: And congrats OP. Pretty cool accomplishment.

  10. I played it over the board, not online so I am relatively sure it was him logged in. If someone knows how to put it in a viewer be my guest. He clearly blundered on move 8, and I am objectively won at that point. From that point on, he was intentionally making inferior moves that he believed could cause the most errors out of my position but were not necessarily objectively best for his, so that he could swindle a draw. The game is very sloppy from his side, but I'll take it.

    I am white:

    8. Qxf4 Qf6 ???
    9. Qc7 Qe7
    10. Qc8+ Qd8
    11. Qxb7 Nd7

    38. Rf5 Kg7
    39. h6+ Kxh6
    40. Rxf6+ Kg7
    41. Rxf7+ 1-0

I had my longest think on move 14. deciding whether or not to pass the c-pawn or just develop the bishop so I could castle and not fall into some stupid tactic with him opening the e-file with my exposed king. ultimately, i decided that him sac'ing another pawn to do so didn't get him anywhere, and it would have been more of a grind by playing Be2 or Bd3.

  11. Don't know that I've ever seen 3....Bg4 before-when I played master level, most everyone played 3....Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 or 4....e6 instead.
  12. Magic the gathering? check

  17. I'm hiding this thread to keep myself from feeling more stupid than I usually do.
  18. If I were still active, I'd take you on, and know I'd play a better game than the life master did, though I haven't played a game since 2001. Hard to believe he's that strong, really, and I played master level for twenty years before retiring.
  19. was this casual play or in a tourney? What was the game in? delays?
  20. Man I miss chess sometimes. I was almost 1500 in 7th grade when I stopped playing (pretty much at my peak). I changed schools so I guess I lost interest after that.

Oh and congrats on the win qjuice. My biggest achievement was drawing a Master when my rating was around 1300.

I mentioned earlier that it was a terribly played game by him, and I wish I could say that I beat a Master in a complicated middle game. By no means do I think I am at the Master level.

It was part of a month long tourney, but both he and I just showed up yesterday and hadn't played the previous rounds.

It was Game in 90min with a 5sec delay.

    Thanks.

Yeah I have no idea what my actual playing strength is right now. I didn't play my first game of chess until I was 21. I then read one beginner book by Jeremy Silman and played online for like 6months before trying my luck in a rated live tournament. My provisional rating after that was 1400. I then moved to Las Vegas shortly after and decided to check out the Clark County Chess Club. It was run, at the time, by Chris Bird. It was probably one of the best run clubs in the country. There were a bunch of expert level players there that were very helpful and would go over my games with me and I improved rapidly. In 9months I was already rated 1700 but was playing at a higher level, my rating just hadn't caught up with my ability. Your learning curve early on is much higher.

After 9months, the guy running the club moved away and the club fell apart. I basically quit playing chess at that time, besides the occasional 3min chess online. 2yrs later I entered the North american open as like a 1695 and played the under 1700 section. I hadn't played one game in 2yrs over 3min and scored 5.5/6 after 6rounds. I then lost on board 1 in the final round to a guy who was sandbagging and is now rated 2100.

After that I didn't play again until thursday night. The club reopened and I just heard about it so went to check it out. I played a 1200 and won pretty easily, and then came back on monday played the game above. I think I am going start going regularly, b/c I really enjoy chess and I would like to know what my actual playing strength, and potential are.

  22. I reckon that guy should have resigned much earlier than he did. Nice win!
