  1. So my brother goes to U of A, hes at his fourth year there and he has a place out there where he basically stays year round. For 2-3 years or so he has had a xanax perscription for anxiety or whatever. Since he is obv an adult my dad and I have no clue how much he takes or how strong etc.

Anyways, I have a pretty good feeling that he has been abusing this stuff for a while now, although he will not admit it to me. How dangerous is this? I don't know much regarding pill/addictions and I am worried for him but we have just never been close (complete opposites in every aspect of life) and my father and I are worried about him.
  2. Benzodiazepines, especially xanax since it's fast acting, can be REAL hard to come off. There is a high risk of seizures if you stop cold turkey. I was prescribed just about every benzo and went through minor withdrawals since I wasn't prescribed for THAT long only a few months. I've heard a lot of horror stories about xanax though. What makes you think that he's abusing it?

When he came home to visit he would just sleep like non stop, probably like 15-16 hours a day... He is just kind of a weird kid, I know he drinks a decent amount, I just feel like hes one of those people who takes it in order to numb and just coast thru life without feelings?

  4. Drugs work differently for different people.

Some people sleep a lot when on Xanex. You can only get a certain amount a month anyway since its a controlled substance. Unless he's got multiple scripts, and doctors, and pharmacies... doubt he's "abusing" them.

Sounds more like a standard side effect to a drug, or his wiring is prone to depression and xanex is not really a depression drug, anxiety is not depression.
  5. Here are some of the withdrawal symptoms of just coming off Xanax,
    • seizures
    • symptom rebound (the reappearance of symptoms in a form worse than they were before taking the medication) -- especially for symptoms associated with panic disorder
    • tremors
    • headache
    • nervousness
    • insomnia
    • depression
The reason I wanted off them in the first place is because they turned me into an emotionless zombie and I was always exhausted. Like to where I could barely do anything. He may not know how dangerous the drug actually is. If you are near certain he's abusing then it may help for your family to confront him.
  6. In the rehab that I just completed, there were a couple girls that were in there because of Xanax. One girl got two DUIs from doing to much.

It can be abused and highly addictive.

And as Leo said..coming off of it can be tough as well.

not sure if youre serious or not but they really are... only thing I'd be worried about is him taking a nap at the wheel, or him getting ridiculously depressed when he decides not to take them anymore

and I've heard that withdrawals from benzo's is worse than coming off opiates in most cases
  11. seems harmless but has the worst withdrawls, and possibly the most dangerous longterm side effects of any drug. ruined my life, if hes taking it more than just occasionally on weekends hes probably dependent on it, and its so good im sure he is if he can get steady supply. and u have to take it every day to avoid withdrawls cuz only 12 hour half-life, so i wouldnt doubt he has real problem. he cant quit cold turkey though, gotta taper off slowly and switch to valium. preferably under dr supervision, although alot of dr's are ignorant or unsympathetic because there havent been many benzo studies etc til recently. I went to a nice detox facilty and still ended up having a seizure etc because they pulled me off too fast and were just ignorant.

pm me if u need anything

  15. xanax are no joke.. i nearly killed myself while abusing these asshole pills 4 or 5 years ago.. i pretty much destroyed every aspect of my entire life while on xanax..
  16. Like everyone else has said, Xanax is bad news.

I've had a history of using drugs. Mainly pot, but about 10 years ago I fucked around with ecstasy, LSD, mushrooms, nitrous, and a little tiny bit of coke. I never had a problem quitting any of those drugs.

I never fucked with regulated pharmaceuticals until this last year. Went through a bad break up, wasn't handling life well - doc prescribed me Xanax. .5mg up to 4 times a day, so 2 mg total each day.

Before I knew it, I was taking 6 - 8 mg a day. When I quit this drug, I had to taper off, and by the time I tapered off, I had the worst drug withdrawal I have ever experienced. I couldn't sleep for 3 days straight, my body temperature fluctuated crazy, my skin felt like it was crawling around on me. I felt like I was losing my mind, and that I was never gonna be back to 'normal.' It was horrible. It took about a month to completely be done with the withdrawal.

Hope your bro gets help and gets through it alright. No doubt in my mind he is abusing them, most likely with alcohol which is even more dangerous. Just make sure he doesn't go cold turkey.

  17. If you take the correct dosage, its fine. Ofc taking 6-8mgs a day is gonna fuck you up. I used to take 1mg a day over a 6month period and never had any hardcore physical withdrawal symptoms coming off of them. When my shrink ended my scripts, I missed having a supply and the feeling it gave me but it was never to the point where I needed to Doctor shop to get my next fix.
  18. how many mgs is 2 bars?
  19. Yeah, I know you aren't supposed to take 6-8mg, it's just that my tolerance built up extremely quick, and that was what I needed to achieve the desired effect.
  20. a bar is 2 mgs. I've never seen anyone as fucked up as someone on xanax, and that includes drunks, tweekers, and junkies. Stay faaaar away from them
  21. oh man.. im lucky i didn't die.. i blacked out for 2 months, worst experience ever..

I get that you got addicted to it, but it just tilts me when someone says, this is "bad news" blah blah because they developed an addiction and high tolerance etc. People ITT seem to be making out like its Heroin or something when it really is just a mild drug. At the end of the day, any drug is bad news if you're taking shit loads of it...
  23. I have some knowledge of Xanax as I've known 2 women who were severely addicted to them for the better part of 20 years continually. One was taking between 6-8mg a day & the other was taking up to 12mg a day. For those that don't know, 12mg of Xanax in 1 day would probably comatose or kill most of us that don't take benzos. Xanax is only meant to be prescribed for short periods of time. Like a 3 or 4 months. IF that long.

Xanax is a highly addictive feel good benzo that it seems once people start to take them they either never want to stop or maybe they can't stop. I know it's a drug that shouldn't be stopped abruptly & should be weened off.

I would say Xanax is today what Quaaludes were back in the day, like Valium, "Mother's little helper" And for those that abuse these types of drugs, my advice is stay away from all of it because it's just not worth it. And when people drink with them they run a risk of being the next "Karen Ann Quinlan" -Karen popped some Valium, pounded some drinks & fell into a coma....she lived in that coma for about 10 years before she died....Pills are dangerous. And they definitely qualify as an "I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ANYTHING" drug.
