It looks like we're going to have to put my dog down very soon. She's almost 17 years old, she was a surprise for my 13th birthday. She hasn't been able to stand, walk, or eat for 3 days now. I'm bringing her to the vet later where I'm expecting to have to schedule an appointment to put her down. I've honestly never been this scared to do anything in my life. A lot of people don't understand this I'm sure, but there is nothing like the unconditional love of a dog. No matter what they never stay mad, they are always happy to see you, and are the best cuddlers around.
I have no idea how to prepare myself for this. She was my first dog. My other dog isn't doing too well either so it looks like it's going to be a terrible year. I honestly can't imagine what it will be like without them around. This just sucks and I'm not really sure how to handle it.
If there are any dog lovers who have had to put their dog down and understand how I'm feeling I would really appreciate advice on how to handle this. I feel like a train wreck right now.
Thanks. -
Sorry tsx, that really sucks. Just remember that she is in pain and her ease and comfort should be your primary concern. She had a long, full life, and also you get a chance to say goodbye. These are certainly things to be thankful for. Be strong. :(

ur 30 years old?
-
No tricks or short cuts for this one I'm afraid. Bring something comfortable and familiar from home, a blanket or toy or something, and just try and remember all the good fun times. And cry. Not like you'll be able to help it anyway, but just let it fly. The anticipation is going to be the worst thing. You know the dog is sick and it's time, you'll be doing the right thing. Terribly sorry for what you're going through, pets aren't just like family members they are family members. All the best to you.

Masterbate.

ughh..this is never fun.
When I had to put down my animal last year, I was torn as to "should I be in the room" during the process and based on advice from OT, I was in the room.
I cried my eyes out but I was so glad that I was the last person my cat saw before passing on.
Your dog lived a very long time and should be happy you got so many wonderful years with him/her. You will cry. You will hurt. But that's normal and good for the process of moving on.
hang in there and I'm/we're her for ya.
Just please stop sexting me. = ) -
It will be very sad, but if she is sufferring you are doing the right thing. If he has lived to be 17 years old, he has had a good life. Sorry to hear about this and wish you better times.

I have a 4 year old dog. Love the dog to death. Throughout my life I have had to put down many loved pets. One thing that always struck me was how afraid they were every time I take them to the vet on regular visits. With the pets I have now I will pay extra to have the vet make a house call and put them to sleep, if possible I will do the injection myself. I just don't want to traumatize the animal in its final day.
Sorry for your loss. -
I'm probably the wrong person to give you advice on death.
Good Luck though, everyone deals with death differently, and I'm just feeling that how I deal with it / handle it would be diametrically opposed to how you will handle it.
Best wishes. -
Will be in 9 months :(
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I really want to put her to sleep at home because I don't want to make a scene at the vet's office but it's my parents dog too and they don't want to do that plus it's a lot more expensive. Guess a lot of people will be starring at me when I completely lose it.
Do you guys think that getting another puppy right away is a good idea? I think that it will help move on so to speak but a few friends have said it's a bad idea. -
it depends upon the people
puppies are a ton of work for the first two years -
Honestly, anyone in the vet's office should understand as they all have pets of their own so I wouldn't worry too much about causing a scene. I've been through it once with our family's 15 year old dog and I am absolutely dreading the day when we have to do it again. The family dog is currently 8 and by the time we have to put her down I believe it'll be on me to actually do it this time and I'm not sure how I'll be able to do it. Tearing up just thinking about it.
Getting another puppy right away probably isn't the best idea. Allow some time to heal. You'll probably find after some time though that you miss having a dog around and will get one but try not to make it a part of the healing process. Get one once you've moved on. -
Whatever you do, DON'T watch marley and me...probably ever

OMG Marley and Me was soooooo sad. That's a movie I'll never watch again. Never seen Old Yeller but we had to read the book in like 3rd grade or something I think.
It's so weird. My mom's parents were like second parents to me and they passed away in 06 and 08 and I think that this is harder even though I loved my grandparents more than words can express and my grandfather is/was my hero. I guess it's that unconditional love. Dogs don't stay mad at their owners, they are always happy to see you, etc.
The thing about moving on before I get another dog, I already have another dog. She's not in great shape either though which is making this soooooo much harder. She's 14 years old and overweight and has arthritis and we think she has a tumor in her stomach cuz she's not eating but isn't losing weight.
Fuck. I love dogs, I wish this wasn't so hard. -
No way to prepare I'm afraid. As others have said it is seriously gonna suck... But you are doin the best thing.
Condolences.
Also I wouldn't get a puppy with a 14 year old. It will terrorize the poor old thing.
Let the old guy live out hos days in peace and quite then if he goes you can get two puppies ! -
I lack a lot of normal human emotions I think but one thing is for certain when/if (you can't prove that my dog ever has to die) my dog dies I will cry and I will be devastated. I got him when he was like 8 pounds and watched him grow to 80 and he is like my kid now I am so protective over him. The fact that you feel the same way means you gave her a good life which is not common for most dogs. It will suck at first but it's one of those things that only time can heal. And who cares what anyone thinks like said above anyone who owns a dog should understand what you're going through. Let loose.

have had to do this several times over the years. Very hard but they need you to be strong for them. On side note I bury all my pets in our backyard..dig the hole before you go to vet if you plan on doing this. just my opinion.

I am going through the same thing right now. My dog is also about 17 years old and my parents called to let me know he wasn't doing well last Friday. On Saturday I went over there and made a plate that consisted of 2 sandwhiches and half a bag of doritos. I instantly dropped it on the floor and let him have it. Just my way of letting him know he's still my homie.

sorry tsxxx, that sucks
go out and get a dog that looks exactly like your old dog, give her the same name, and convince yourself that its really the same dog. -
Very sorry to hear that Stacie.
The gf and I took her parents 14 year old rotti a few months back bc her dad is a dick and just locks the old dog outside all day and night and there's no way this old dog could make it even one night outside in the cold. He's starting to have problems getting up and around so it's obv time to start thinking about putting him down and obv now I've bonded with him and don't want to do it.
In the end, it's what's best for your dog and think about how lucky he will be to die painlessly with you there with him. Def a better fate than most of us will receive.
Thoughts and prayers for you and your dog. -
Edited By: voorh33s Jan 10th, 2012 at 05:16 PMI guess nothing, I just don't think it goes both ways so much as it does with a dog. Your cat was probably thinking about catching lizards and friskies in it's final moments.Originally Posted by Sandman_Good

As for OP, we had to put down our 5 year old golden retriever (most awesome dog eva) and it really did suck. My parents bought us a new dog a couple months later and I guess that helped a little. I would def wait a lil bit. -
i usually post the dog on a swing gif in sad threads to try to cheer the person up
i dont know if its appropriate for this thread tho -

Reminds me of the King of Queens episode when Doug's parents kept buying the same type dog for like 30 years and Doug thought it was the same one as when he was a kid.
Sorry tsxxx :(
