Obviously everyone knows how much of a soccer fan I am, so naturally I am depressed when USA loses. Now I expected us to lose this game, but that wasn't what made me upset the most....
In the sportsbook, there were tons of people wearing Mexico jerseys, and even people I personally knew, that were born here, cheering for Mexico. WTF? Then I get home and see like 10 facebook friends who were all born in the USA wearing Mexico jerseys and had like "Go Mexico!" on their status updates.
Am I missing something? It's like fucking treason to me -
being depressed about sports is sad.

I used to think like this as well....

but you have to understand they are cheering for the people not the country. I mean its not their soccer players faults that the government is fn crooked and their country sucks ass.
They are cheering the people much more than they are the country.
If the country was so great they would of never left...they know this..but they will always remember the people and the culture. Thats why they still cheer for them.
I have worked with and employed hundreds of mexicans...and almost all say this same thing -
i went to the gold cup in 2009 in phoenix for my wife and nicaragua (stunningly made it to the gold cup) mexico was the late game. and i honestly never got over the feeling that at a minimum half of the mexican fans were american born. all the green shirts in the parking lot, nice arizona plates. fine to cheer i guess, i wasnt mad per say, but i do find it funny. i made plenty of comments to my wife about it all. even more so in a usa/mexico situation.
overall, you are right to be upset if they are born here. .also saw a couple dudes wearing mexico jerseys around town here that were not mexicans, at 11am. im like wtf all day celebration of different country jerkfuck. -

yes u are wrong
its like saying every person that was born in certain city has to cheer for that city baseball team, maybe someone was born in boston but their family was originally from new york and they cheer for the yankees , it doesnt mean they hate boston or treason.
Depending on where your family came from, maybe the first couple of generations would have cheered for italy, ireland, or wherever they came from in a football game against ther us as long as they weren expelled from that country -
I don't think your city argument holds much water...it's not like you are rooting for LA over Dallas...you are rooting against the COUNTRY in which you were born and live.

Edited By: Prestonluv Jun 26th, 2011 at 08:16 AMYes i read your post. Many of these people are 2nd generation immigrants i would expect. Therefore they were raised in an all spanish speaking house most likely. Many of the family friends were probably mexican as well. They were surrounded with this culture at a young age and now they support it. I understand that.Originally Posted by LVpokerdealer

These second generation mexican/americans will have kids that will be raised in either a dual speaking or english speaking household. Its the third and fourth generation kids that will most likely all be cheering for the USA. The shift to supporting a home country almost never changes with first generation immigrants(especially illegal ones) ...it rarely shifts with second generation immigrants...you start to see a shift with 3rd generation and by the fourth generation you have full fledged USA supporters who will cheer on Mexico as a 2nd team to support their ancestors.
This same shift has occured with almost every immigrant population to every country over time. -

i agree 100%, although i can see also pulling against your own country's team only if you think the team is full of jackasses. i mean, if i have to pull for dwaye wade, lebron james and chris bosh in the olympics again, i might just start pulling for german basketball. -

I see the same shit with the koreans, japanese, chinese, puerto ricans, russians, etc as i do with the mexicans.
The mexicans are just magnified cause of their huge population here. -
If you were born hre you should root for America, esp if you lived here your whole life. who gives a flying fuck about where your parents were from or what language you speak at home. I got plenty of friends like this and it tilts me

Thanks for the compliment.

I was born in chicago...parents are mexican...i cheer for mexico and always will...i will never cheer for the usa in a soccer game any other sport I do.. It is something that if you aint mexican u will not understand...that is all
-
dont get me wrong clay ur patriotism is honorable love for the usa is a great thing. I just think ur buddies know people over in mexico who just live a life of poverty and a soccer victory puts a smile on their faces. you're obv into soccer a lot but to the average american that a mexican encounters they prob perceive we dont give a shit. trust me that game is played in mexico and immigration announces at the game anyone who cheers for the usa will issued a usa citizenship, it might take maybe 30 seconds b4 a deafening god bless america chant starts..

I guarantee you that when I root for the Red Sox vs the Yankees I am rooting for Boston to defeat NYC.

So I was born and raised here, and I root for the US against any and every team out there with one exception; I will always cheer for my Dutchies. My family came from there and I grew up watching Dutch soccer before you could ever get any American soccer on TV. I had Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten, and Frank Rijkaard action figures beating the shit out of a team comprised of Cobra Commander, Tomax and Xamot, and pretty much every other bad guy action figure I owned before I'd ever heard of Tony Meola. My favorite color, and a shocking percentage of my wardrobe, has been orange for as long as I remember.
I used to skip school to watch Euro 88 matches and the like on the random Italian channel and Univision when I was little. That said, I've been to a few US games and never a Dutch game, and my best live sports experience of all time was being in the stands during World Cup 2002 when we bitchslapped Portugal around for 26 minutes and then held on for dear life against the relentless pressure of Figo and Rui Costa. It was also sick how amazing it was to be in a huge, packed soccer bar in Seattle when Landon scored his goal last year.
I wore US gear today watching the game in Malaysia, but I'd root against us if we played the Dutch. Does that make me a bad person?
