It isn't about protecting criminals stealing music, its about protecting any sites with user generated content. Under this law, the government would have the right to blacklist and block any site that has just a few links to illegal copywrited works (which is pretty much every site with user generated content, including this one). Trusting our government to only do this with the worst offenders and sites that are based entirely around piracy is incredibly naive.
Piracy isn't going away, even if this law passes. The people determined to steal will still continue to do so, but this will give the govt unprecedented (in this country at least) power over the internet. Do you really want that? Do you really think this law will benefit the artists? I really really doubt it will. -

If this passes, the internet is done for. If this passes it sets a precedent that the internet should and can be regulated. Maybe not now or in 5 years. But in 10, 15 years when the government wants full control over what you can do on the internet this bill will play a major roll in those cases... iffff it passes.
