I spotted this animal on a hike in the mountains a couple miles east of Half Moon Bay here in CA. I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of coyotes, so I knew it was too big to be a coyote. Everyone I have shown the pictures to think it is a cat but they were pretty clueless as well. I have sent an email with the pictures to the people who maintain the trails there as they request for mountain lion sightings, but have yet to hear back, so I figured that there are probably plenty of knowledgable people here in OT who could help.

Zoom in on the pics to get some better detail. I didn't feel it was good to look down to grab my camera when it was that close. It did run off once it spotted it us and seemed to want nothing to do with us.

yeah, prolly a young mountain lion judging by the ears and the tail in the first pic.

I didn't even think of getting pics of the tracks until after it was too late. I guess I was worried about what else could be around...That said, I bricked on that, I could have gotten way more pics.

Alright OP that 2nd pic is creepy. Did you finish your hike? I'd be worried that he/she would circle back and attack you. Are there any kind of warnings at the trail? What do they say about lion encounters and what you should do?

Looks like a walrus to me. GL

When we first saw it, it was coming down towards us, but once it spotted us, it started retreating like in the first pic...but every so often it would stop and give us a look back. Really looked like it wanted no part of us, which is what I always heard. I guess I was more worried about the parent being around watching its young because this did not look like a full grown cat. We waited about five minutes and moved on making sure to be loud and making our presence known.
There are signs at the trail head that warned of mountain lions. It had a drawing, showed their footprints and give a few tips, such as appear large, don't turn your back to them, if you get attacked do not attempt to run away, rather hold your ground and fight back if necessary. And a number and email to contact the rangers if you spotted the animal. -
looks friendly you should've tried to pet it

What were you planning to do with that peanut butter jar, OP?

That would have been cool as shit to see HUGE FAIL for not getting more pictures I mean really as long as he was not starving or cornered you had nothing to worry about
anyway thanks for sharing -
