No thread on this yet? Pretty sick leak imo...
"The United States was catapulted into a worldwide diplomatic crisis today, with the leaking to the Guardian and other international media of more than 250,000 classified cables from its embassies, many sent as recently as February this year.
At the start of a series of daily extracts from the US embassy cables – many designated "secret" – the Guardian can disclose that Arab leaders are privately urging an air strike on Iran and that US officials have been instructed to spy on the UN leadership. These two revelations alone would be likely to reverberate around the world. But the secret dispatches which were obtained by WikiLeaks, the whistleblowers' website, also reveal Washington's evaluation of many other highly sensitive international issues."

Some documents are already leaked to some newspapers, but the full documents are supposed to be up on wikileaks in a matter of hours, after fixing the DDOS attack. Don't know how much they're gonna actually release, sounds like everything though... Hope it doesn't lead to some bad shit. -
More dude, these documents can basically tell you what the US think about every country (at least all the friendlies). diplomatic crisis is gonna be inevitable.

"Among literallyscores of revelations which may cause uproar, some will be particularly dismaying in Britain. They include:
• Highly critical private remarks about David Cameron and George Osborne's "lack of depth", made by Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank of England, to the US ambassador.
• A scornful analysis of UK "paranoia" over the US-UK so-called special relationship. It is suggested that "keeping HMGthe British government "off-balance" about itthe relationship might be a good idea.
• US shock at the rude behaviour of Prince Andrew when abroad.
• Secret US military missions flown from a UK base, which Britain alleged could involve torture.
• A plan to deceive the British parliament over the use of banned US weapons." -
shucks, didn't show up on search. also thought that it would garner more attention in ot. the european media is pretty all over it at the moment.

Edited By: Seykota Nov 28th, 2010 at 10:09 PMNo offense dude, but this sounds like standard european chat in the papers, especially British papers. I recall some pretty crass remarks between old french pres Chirac and Italy's Berlusconi and if there was ever "rude" shit said look in your own backyard at your own bs relations. Of course, with Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Spain all in chaos and Germany fucking it up more everyday....might as well ban together and love the shit talking about the US. Europe is full of epic fail right now.Originally Posted by wonglondo

^^^lolol whut?
who's shit talking who? this is obv not good for the US, but it's not good for anyone either imo. only a few pages of the documents have been leaked so far and mostly are harmless, but there must be a reason these are internal documents and not public statements. And I mean, you can't even ompare "crass remarks" with some of these claims:
- Iran attempting to adapt North Korean rockets for use as long-range missiles
- Corruption within the Afghan government, with concerns heightened when a senior official was found to be carrying more than $50m in cash on a foreign trip
- Bargaining to empty the Guantanamo Bay prison camp - including Slovenian diplomats being told to take in a freed prisoner if they wanted to secure a meeting with President Barack Obama
- Germany being warned in 2007 not to enforce arrest warrants for US Central Intelligence Agency officers involved in an operation in which an innocent German citizen with the same name as a suspected militant was abducted and held in Afghanistan
- US officials being instructed to spy on the UN's leadership by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
either way, looking forward to what happens. the guy says these documents are 70 times larger than the previous iraq/afghanistan leak -
apparently you dont read the guardian or the bbc that often...you would see that this is nothing new and pretty standard not to mention some of those items are headlines ive seen in the US papers, like corruption in afghanistan. omg really? is that anything we didnt already suspect. i mean shit we only had major headlines here weeks ago about afghans taking money from iran. like i said nothing new. now which countries are gonna be left denominated in the euro as their base currency going forward,,,that's news. let's speculate on that! im curious how much US $ that we'll never get back has been shipped to the EU to shore up your shit banks.

lol, if you already knew what was the Europe trashing for? I could see you making that remark if you were uninformed, but now it's apparent you just did it out of spite :). FWIW, I don't care, I'm not European lol.
I brought up the main points cuz I mistakenly thought there was no thread on this yet. I posted this now instead of 2 days ago because the documents are supposed to be up, like, now, but it's not up yet and it's almost bed time. sigh. -
because europe is so fucked up right now, they need someone else to trash to forget their own problems. if you dont get it, then so be it. when the british pound go so f'd in the 80's brits could not stand germans because the german currency was so strong. brits would go on vacation and see the germans in their beamers and mercedes and talk crazy shit about them to downplay their own problems. they hated on the germans for that reason. it's standard british way. study some european culture dude
Edited By: Seykota Nov 28th, 2010 at 10:38 PM
And last I checked, Amsterdam is located on the European continent and the Netherlands uses the Euro, so you're close enough to European for me. =) I don't blame you for trying to claim you're Asian or something. I would too if I was European right now. Good day. -
Maybe I'm a crazy patriot, but its never a "slamdunk" when sensitive intelligence is leaked to the public.
Our president/country has enough problems to deal with other than this stupid shit. -
lol, wow, you're an insecure one aren't you. so far the only person calling this "USA trashing" is yourself. others see it as a pretty fucked up event which provides lots of interesting insights from all sorts of perspectives.
aaand it's up! Only 219/250k so far, but wow. i'm guessing that owner guy gotta go into hiding now.
http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/ -
like i said if you actually read the british papers other than to post this stuff, you would see that it's the normal british way. you came in here posting this on a forum with mainly US posters trying to talk shit. guess you don't like it when your own continent's bs gets talked about either. we'll call it a wash.
Edited By: Seykota Nov 28th, 2010 at 10:44 PM -
It's been well publicized for a couple weeks up here that the wikileaks release would cause a shitstorm. The amount of diplomatic activity has been extremely high in advance of this coming out. I understand what Seykota is saying in that a lot of this really isn't new. What is new is that these are now publicly available documents that are going to require some official statements and reactions from governments around the world. Shits gonna be ugly for a while.

This just came out on the Canoe website:
OTTAWA - The Obama administration ordered diplomats to spy on foreign governments and dignitaries – including here in Canada – as a way to provide key biographical data to the Central Intelligence Agency.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics.../16351291.html -
what? i think you need to clean those sands out your vagina and calm down. i see this as a pretty fucked up shit to happen, and coming here expecting that people would react the same. i thought it would be big news ATM, considering the documents just got officially leaked minutes ago.
Edited By: wonglondo Nov 28th, 2010 at 10:53 PM
nobody's trying to talk shit itt except you talking shit about europe, which is not relevant to the discussion at hand (whoa, deja vu) or is it even my continent lol.
Reason: 2 seykota obv. <3 -
to me this is like the mosque at ground zero, was already happening but now because of some blogger or a hacker it's gonna turn into a shit storm. id be more surprised if we wouldnt have been doing this stuff for biographical info.

Edited By: wonglondo Nov 28th, 2010 at 11:09 PMright.... massive intelligence leak = ground zero mosque blogger. and oh, just read your edits, thanks for the european culture lesson with the beamers and mercedes example, i genuinely lol'd :D.Originally Posted by Seykota

wanta is right, guess OT don't care, lol. off to bed then, have a nice monday everyone!
Reason: for edit -
True - but up until now the opposition parties of your allies had no proof for example that secret negotiations may have been underway to work with the USA on military excersises (or whatever). The published party line in Canada and the official party line have always been in conflict which is nothing new in politics. Wikealeaks is providing the smoking gun to opposition parties around the world and it will be a major embarrasment for sitting politicians.

The problem is what kind of biographical information? I mean are we checking public records to profile someone or do homework on someone or what? That happens in business all the time. Know who you're dealing with. How is the info being obtained? Someone who wants to sell a paper loves a good emotional word such as "spying" but I need more info.
Edited By: Seykota Nov 28th, 2010 at 11:24 PM
No someone in OT cared. That person would be me, you just didn't like my responses. It's all good and nothing personal, you've challenged me well in some threads recently and I respect that. Not oblivious to problems in the US, but Europe is no poster child for diplomatic relations either. Have a nice slumber and dank u.Originally Posted by wonglondo

Obama's spying on people? oh noes! lol
once again I must support my potus! -
I don't want to speculate on it. They specifically mentioned looking into personal internet accounts, handles, URLs, frequent flier cards, and work schedules. As you say, this would be typically the kind of things you want to know about someone you are negotiating with. It just isnt the kind of information you admit to looking at in diplomatic circles (especially among your allies).

More importantly, if you are the party in power (the conservative party in Canada) and constantly downplay your military involvement around the world, the opposition party (Liberals and NDP) will have a field day with any published documents that point to your previously unofficial agreements with american politicians. People like Stephen Harper can't be too comfortable with this kind of thing being released as public information. -
Sax, thanks for the response and highlighting potential problems from the reports particularly in the Canadian political realm. It will be interesting to see what comes out and how it is handled. I also have a hard time believing that the POTUS and other government figures haven't had some biographical information of their own profiled by other countries either. Highly doubt this is a one way process and quite frankly it sounds like something that seems standard to me but who knows. Agree with you on wanting to keep it on the DL though.

cool - spying is like masturbation. Everybody does it (except me). Nobody likes to get caught doing it (except Bfactor).
More importantly, the Grey Cup game just started. Go Saskatchewan !!! -
I found it interesting the number of Arab nations that want us to attack Iran over their nukes. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/nov/28/us-embassy-cables-saudis-iran
I know the Saudi's have given permission for Israel to transit their airspace to strike Iran, but Jordan, Egypt and others wanting US troops/US Strike in Iran was interesting. If they see Iran as such a threat why don't they handle it? Would be interesting to see these countries ally with Israel to take out Iran. -
Sounds like a Shia-Sunni thing.

" U.S. diplomats quoted sources describing North Korean leader Kim Jong Il as a "flabby old chap" and someone who had suffered "physical and psychological trauma" as a result of his stroke."
"An official at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow wrote in late 2008 about the relationship between Russian President Dimitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that Medvedev "plays Robin to Putin's Batman."
" Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is "feckless, vain and ineffective as a modern European leader," according to a U.S. official in Rome. Another cable remarked on Berlusconi's "frequent late nights and penchant for partying hard."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...T2010112802494
Most of the cables I've read so far seem to have come from personal interaction or observation which led to detailed note taking. None of this indicates spying to me. Maybe not everything has come out or the media has been censored. None of the descriptions or quotes above about the political figures above are anything new in the news. The only exception is this time the source is a diplomat's cable. This stuff has been overblown unless the media has censored the worst due to government pressure. Just my opinion. -
Holy Moses, Larry Sanger, a Wikipedia co-founder, went off on Wikileaks via Twitter over the past day or so. Here's a run down.

Really I have mixed feelings about this whole crusade. If national security isn't compromised I love it. I desperately want a complete shakedown of how both the US and the international community does business. But if it risks lives its just not worth it. What's really sad I think is that its taking this kind of grand unveiling of information to even get people to care. If people were more proactive none of what's being revealed would really come all that shocking. But diplomacy has become such a complex cold chess game of greedy, self interested people and nations that most people wouldn't even suspect this much maneuvering occurs.
Cliffs:
We need a citizens arrest of all world leaders the next time the UN convenes and force them all to smoke bud. Then maybe we'll all get along (until of course Mahmoud won't pass the Doritos to Silvio)
