I think I read somewhere that HBO gave this show the biggest per-episode budget of any series its ever produced. While I can't wait to watch it, the fact of the matter is that each of the 4 books (and 3 to come---if "A Dance..." doesn't get here soon, I'm breaking something) is 2000 pages in size 6 font, so it will be interesting to see what's left out (hopefully the Bran stuff)

I'm pumped. I did hear that he is breaking book 5 into two books and that is what is taking so long. I'll believe it when I see it.

He broke book 4 (A Feast for Crows) into two parts and that book is part 1; the upcoming release is part 2 plus more, so the he's been done with the majority of it for several years. I think his publishers have (smartly I suppose) delayed this release to coincide with the HBO series.

Never heard of the books, but this show seems cool

i'm not a huge fantasy guy either, i thought lord of the rings was entertaining but i would never recommend it to anyone, but this story is fucking awesome... i guess i'd describe it as a lord of the rings geared towards adults, and 1000x better. If you have an imagination you'll dig them.
and to OP, yeah i'm really lookin forward to this show, although i don't think it'll come close to the books, as these things never do. I actually guessed this is what this thread was about when i saw the title -
The books are incredible; like the poster above me, I'd never read fantasy before being introduced to this series and you absolutely cannot put them down. After I started the first one, I took the next two days off of work and didn't leave my couch. They're long, but they fly by and are just unbelievable. Every chapter is told from a different character's viewpoint as the story progresses, which is atypical and makes it even a more enjoyable read.
