Going to see them tonight for first time in Boston. They are supposed to be an amazing live act. I know Mike Portnoy is no longer with them but Mike Mangini is supposed to be a beast on the kit.. Anybody ever seen them? Cant wait.
-
Used to listen to them before football games in college. Good jam.
-
yes, incredible band and amazing live act. my favorite song/performance is definitely:
-
huge fan. post tr later tonight!
-
Used to follow them extensively in high school
have a great time -
^^^ such a great fucking song.
-
Never saw them. I hope Portnoy left because of a complaint, though.
-
portnoy left because he'd been with them forever and wanted a change in direction (I think- I could be wrong). I remember he wrote some long letter to the fans on his blog.

Portnoy was just on That Metal Show this weekend (it aired this weekend was shot months ago) and he was very clear why he left: after 25 years together and NO breaks (other than a few months here and there) he wanted to take a 1-2 year break. The rest of the band didn't so he either had to go record/tour with them against his will or leave so he left.

The best news I've heard in a LONG time musically though - he and John Sykes (whitesnake, thin lizzy, blue murder, etc) are teaming up and have a ton of material already. Can't. Fucking. Wait!
To OP, I've seen them live a few times and it's amazing. I've also seen Petrucci a few times on the G3 tours with Portnoy and it was amazing then too. If you can appreciate talented musicians then you will be blown away, granted the level of musicianship is not the same without Portnoy who is an all time great.
Their most radio friendly song:
Was just temporary filling in for the Rev, he isn't there long term -
mangini is fucking awesome, and if the "level of musicianship" dropped with him as MP's replacement, then it's a pretty minimal one imo.

I'm going to the show Wednesday in NYC. They're playing with Trivium, who is a sick band in their own right.
-
<3 Dream Theater. Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory is one of the greatest albums of all time. Required listening from 1st second of 1st track to last second of last track. Can't just pick one song. It's a cohesive album that must be listened to in entirety.

I didn't even realize they were in Boston tonight. I have plans but am considering changing them.. -
There are still tickets left as far as I know. Stop by. I'm the dude in the hat..;)
-
I like Liquid Tension Experiment a whooooole lot more, but Dream Theater is really good as well.
-
I'm pretty biased I guess I am just an enormous Portnoy fan it probably stems from him being so influenced by my favorite band/drummer in Rush.

I honestly don't know much about Mangini other than he played with Vai for a little while and I only know that because of some old Vai DVDs I have. Doing a quick search he recorded a Rush Tribute album so he is already cool in my book lol
I guess Dream Theater wouldn't hire anyone who didn't destroy the drums because the replacement was always going to be under the microscope attempting to fill some big shoes -
Mangini's drum kit is outrageous. 4 bass drums. He's giving Neil Peart a run for his money for amount of hardware on a kit..
-
DO PIGS LOVE SHIT??
DREAM THEATER PWNNNNSSSSSS -
Was my fav band for about 10 years but I am not as much a fan of the newer stuff. Although I think Jordan Rudess is a better keyboard player, I kind of like the old vibe with Kevin Moore or Derek Sherinian. Always a great show and I agree with with the resident rocket surgeon that Metropolis 2000 was the best. Actually the live in new york for that album might be the highlight. Oddly enough that was with Jordan Rudess.
-
If you are a Kevin Moore fan have you ever checked out OSI or Chroma Key?

not that Im a big fan, I just like the older vibe in DT. I havent listened to either of those bands but my bro used to mention OSI alot. Im not doing anything so maybe I will check it out.
I think it might have been a post in OT that tipped me off to this Joe Bonamassa guy. I have really been digging this band of his with Derek Sherinian lately. -
Just a quick update on the Show.. It was at the Orpheum in Boston which is an old theatre and not very comfortable. Kinda like everything in Boston. It was hot as hell in there and we are packed in there like Sardines in the Balcony..
The show itself was awesome.. Trivium opened and Im not familiar with them too much so nothing exciting to report out of them..
Dream Theatre was amazing. Any questions about a drop off in musicianship with the new drummer were ended immediatly. Mike Mangini is a sicko. This is what his kit looked like.
Im only familiar with a few Dream Theatre songs by name and they didnt play them except Forsaken. Here is the setlist. They played for 2 hours.
Bridges in the Sky
These Walls
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
Endless Sacrifice
Drum Solo
The Ytse Jam
Acoustic
The Silent Man
Beneath the Surface
(with Eugene Friesen)
Outcry
On the Backs of Angels
Forsaken
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
Breaking All Illusions
Encore:
Under a Glass Moon
The one song that really was my favorite was Endless Sacrifice. Holy fuck balls that is an awesome Song..
-
awesome setlist, glad you had fun OP. amazing band
-
Yeah I just got back from the NYC show. Endless Sacrifice was insane. The drum solo was intense. The new drummer is awesome.
