I have a basic membership and send emails all the time.

I've never tried to add anyone. A couple people have added me, but I never go on there. And like I said, I don't want to just add him to my contacts. My last name has changed since the last time I was around him, so I'm not sure he would even recognize me with my current name and may not add me. That's why I want to send him a personal message.

Rounders, can you tell me how you did it? I clicked on "send message" and it took me to a screen that said "upgrade your membership". It lead me to believe that you had to have a premium account to send an email. It absolutely wouldn't let me just send him a message without upgrading my account. -
Just "invite him to connect" and edit the invite message to be a personal message...ez game

Pretty sure you cant send a direct invite to connect if the person is totally outside your network (not 3 degrees or closer) or you don't know their email address.

If you know where this person works or has worked, simply add that company to your profile and that should allow you to attempt to connect. Personalize the connection message and then go back and delete the company from your profile.
The premium membership is used mainly by recruiters and sales people who use it for leads. Can't see much value in paying for that.
