  1. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:X:RTQ:US:1123

Ok bought that computer off ebay. It came with no operating system. I lost my XP disk. My question is this... Can i take this hard drive from this computer with xp already installed and just put it in my new computer? Would it work? then i would just use the hard drive that came with the ebay computer as storage.
  2. Yes you can, and on the second hard drive your going to have to set it as slave instead of master(on the back of the hard drive)
  3. you'd need to configure bios to it first then perhaps

  4. Yeah, it would work, but its not easy to get it working well. You will have to install drivers for all the hardware on the new computer.

Why not just download XP from a torrent site? The serial number should be on a sticker on the computer.

do this. or else you're going to have to slave it.

  7. Sorry - Its unlikely to work. You may get lucky but i've only had this work once. Its works so seldomly i've given up trying this as a solution.

XP is finicky about HD drivers, and if the HDD controllers aren't similar enough to function under the same driver then you're going to need to hire a geek.

To increase your chances you need to install as many of the drivers for your new box on the old machine prior to moving it.

  8. It's on the back, there should be pins with assigned settings for master, slave, etc.

    SATA or PATA? (aka IDE)

You probably dont need to get the manuals, but it wont hurt.

You'll probably find that your using IDE, with both the drives set to Cable Select.

Force the drive you want to boot from to primary. Set your data drive to secondary/slave.

search for "master slave ide" for more info.
  10. ok sorr0w,

The new hard drive that came with the computer has a little red cable im assuming its sata. The old one or the one i want to throw in it is the big wide sob. ide?

  12. Bugger.

(FWIW didnt' look at the original link - I have now)

Red cable - SATA, Wide thing - IDE.

Your life is a little more complicated by this....

You only have a single IDE channel in your new box - the cable your DVD is attached to.

I'm going to guess that the cable to the DVD doesn't have a second female connector on it (the do that to cheap out on cables) does your old hard drive have two connectors on it?

I recommend installing on the SATA disk and transferring your data to the new drive and just ditching(or use as a backup) the old drive.

    GL with the XP torrent.
  13. "I'm going to guess that the cable to the DVD doesn't have a second female connector on it" (no it doesn't) "does your old hard drive have two connectors on it?" (yes)..... ok. wow my head hurts. confusion ensues...

  14. You need to hook your old hard drive and the DVD drive on the same cable, which i'm sure your going to have some cable length issues with.

Make sure you get the master/slave settings correct before you power the box up. I recommend master for the HDD and slave for the DVD.

IDE is a pain - the speed of the channel is determined by the slowest device on the chain. If you have a CD/DVD on the chain it will almost certainly be slower than your old machine (fun...)

Install to the sata drive and transfer your data across. The time you spend doing that will be a lot less frustrating than (seemingly) random hangs and slowdowns trying to run from the IDE drive.

  15. "You only have a single IDE channel in your new box - the cable your DVD is attached to."........ Looked in the box. What is the other channel or port or whatever you call it right next to the one the dvd is plugged into. It is the same size. I cant plug this hard drive into that?? Thanks again s0rrow...

Apologies - Must have pulled up an image of the wrong motherboard.

Yes, you can plug the hard drive into that.

Either the motherboard manual or the board itself will label the plug as primary or secondary. You have two IDE channels (primary/secondary) that you can plug two devices into (master/slave)

If you only have 1 device on each channel then you don't need to worry about master/slave settings.

I still recommend installing onto the SATA drive and using your old drive as storage in this configuration.

    s0rrow.
