1. i have a bet with a freind to see who can throw the faster baseball. anyone know the avg. speed of a 24 year old? how 'bout a 12 year old's arm? i tried googling but i was just getting a bunch of cheesedick results (links to blogs and that nature). any links to scientific data? thanks OT.
2. I might be able to touch 80 still I maxed out mid-upper 80s my senior year, Id say 72 for the average male. I would be surprised if the average fastball for an age group has ever been tested.

edit: I lied I guess its been tested, I'll still stick with 72 for 24 year olds, the 12 year olds Id say closer to 50 maybe less.
3. it depends upon what kind of empirical evidence you want

CalTech has a great study on this subject, but the sample size is pretty limited and the age range is much more broad than just 12 and 24 yrs

you can also find a much more detailed study, broken down to the year for age, from an MIT study from early 2001. the data is a little more raw, but could serve to help in your bet

good luck
4. I read a few years back that it had been and you were right on 72 was the average for males. Not sure if the broke it down by age or not but I remember the 72 mph.
5.
Pitching speed of 12 year olds

By: Randy Dykstra

One thing about speed guns... and you've probably heard in MLB television games ...There's a fast gun and a slow gun.... Now If they are supposed to be accurate to within 1 MPH how can that be? so we can spout numbers but unless they are from the same type gun they may differ slightly...

Well, Speeds also change if you get readings out a pitchers hand or just before it gets to the catcher.... I'm told, about 10%.

I have a Speed Chek machine which only measures objects within about 25 feet and I measure at the catcher. A year ago I had a12U travel team and 49 kids tried out for the team and I clocked all of them. (most of them were LL all-stars) (not all were Ps) My average throwing speed was 51 mph - High was 60 and low was 44. Now if we add about 10% to get out of hand velocity you have 48 to 67. The pitchers I kept all threw High 50s( as measured by my machine).... so the high 50 to low 60s is normal in my mind....

This year, I coach with the San Diego Stars.... Last year they Won AAU 12U Nationals and Cooperstown last year... The Stars had one kid who threw in the 70s... but he was 6' 2" tall and 165lbs (ie hit puberty early). Definitely, not typical, (Not even on the chart!)

I clocked this years Stars team and the top 4 Ps throw between 62 and 68 (est. out of hand 68 to 74). I would rate these 4 kids as the top 12U Ps in San Diego. In LLs If you can throw 60 mph you are doing quite good.
6. I went to a carnival once and one of the games was to throw 3 baseballs, 1 for warmup, 2nd for real, and if the 3rd one was within like 3 mph of the 2nd ball you won a prize. of course the 3rd ball they hand me weighs significantly less than the 2nd one, bastards. I didn't really wanna carry around a Coke pilsnar glass for 2 hours anyways.....
7. my nephews best friend plays travel ball here and hes 12 throws 74 mph i think his dad said
8. his dad is probably lying, anytime you "hear" someone throws something in the competitive baseball world you can automatically knocked off 5 or more MPH until you see it it for yourself with a legit gun. A 12 year old throwing 70 is gasing it.
9. 60-65 MPH, the avg 12 year old that plays baseball has better form than the avg male. Form is key when determining pitch speed. Strength is whatever.
10. Id say that is way too high, I played against a lot of really good pitchers when I was 12 and the best of the best would be hitting 70 and a lot of the really really good kid were probabaly touching 65.

Unless you were talking about the 24 year old, I think that the average 24 year old can easily touch 70 just on strenght alone,
11. form is everything true, look at mariano rivera he's a twig but has thrown hard for a long time
12. i understand Admiral but the kid is a stud for 12 i had no prob beliving it in all fairnees to you though i have never seen it on a gun ...........but the kid can really play

reminds me of a young jeff francouer now that was a stud muffin god what a playa
13. Absolutely no way the average male's fastball is 72. I'm not even sure the average fastball of high school varsity baseball players would be 72. People generally overestimate their own abilities by a longshot. I would say the average fastball of a 24 year old male would be around 55 MPH.
14. i would have to agree, somewhere around 60ish if you gave them a dozen warm up balls.
15. are we going from a pitching motion or with a crow hop, the will make a big difference, I still think the average male is strong enough that with no regard for where they are throwing it is strong enough atleast touch high 60's
16. Umm you ever watch the little league world series on Espn before? Last year there were a couple kids throwing high 70s low 80s.
17. no there werent, there are a few kids touching 70+ in these but everyone else throws 65-68ish
18. I was gonna post exactly what Agent Mahone said.

No way in fuckin' hell is the average speed 72 mph for an adult. LMFAO <---I never say that, by the way...that should show you how fuckin ludicrous it is to think that the AVERAGE is 72.

I agree that the average is somewhere between 55-60 mph. 72 mph LOOOOOOOOOL I can't stop laughing. Seriously.

And Admiral, it's not about strength at all. I know some wiry bastards who can throw heat, and some jacked guys who can't throw shit.

19. I can hit 83 and am consistently in the high 70's.

beat that bishes!
20. yeah I know its not about strenght, maybe I had exceptional form because I am really weak but I could hit upper 80s. I guess Im just overestimating, but like I said before it all depends on if the data is taken with a crow hop or off a mound from the windup. I bet if you go from the crow hop the average would jump 7+ MPH.
21. I agree about the crow hop.

But honestly, you guys are seriously overestimating people.

First, if a person has never pitched, he's going to have terrible methanics and won't know how to use his legs.

Some of you might be able to hit the 80s, but even then, I think a lot are overestimating.

I'm 30 years old and I'm a sports/stats nut. I can count on one hand the people that I know that can throw over 80 mph...there certainly aren't enough to compensate for the guys that are gonna throw it 50-55 to bring the "average" to 72 mph. It just isn't happening.

Also, "fastball" implies from a windup...not from a crow hop or otherwise.

22. I read through a few of the replies and a bunch of htem said 70-75. I have no evidence to account for this, but that must be wrong. If you guys are relatively athletic, but haven't played baseball in years I would bet that you could probably throw 55 after a few warmups. If you threw for a couple of weeks you could probably break 60 and maybe 65. 75 is fucking fast, I don't think the average highschool varsity pitcher throws that fast.
23. The average schmo on the street can MAYBE average 50mph.
I pitched in little league and was FAST, but I hadn't thrown in years til I went to a ball game where they had a radar gun, you get three throws, if you guess how fast your third pitch is you win something. I threw my friggin arm out and I maxed out at 61mph. To average 72, you'd have to be an active player.
24. EXACTLY...well said Keylight and GoldSheetJoe

I would bet my left nut that the "average" H.S. varsity player does not throw 75 mph.

I would say 70 mph is probably average for a varsity pitcher and that 58 mph or so is average for an adult male.

25. The average high school pitcher also sucks haha

ok well now thinking about it Im sure I was over estimating like I already said a few times, this is probably because I have never really seen someone who doesnt play baseball throw a ball as hard as they can I was just making an estimate based off of what would seem reasonable slower for an average male. I was also assuming they meant how hard you can throw a ball not necesarily from a windup which would drop the average a considerable amount.
26. My brother played in a tiny town high school team, their 3 starters all threw 82+ with one kid breaking 90. Two of them are D1 pitchers now and my brother plays d3. They have all been clocked over 90. Don't really know what this has to do with anything, but I suck and am fat and could probably get about 65.
27. where do they all play? I played D2 for two years before it just stopped working out.
28. Evansville, Wichita St, and Milikin
29. I played with a couple kids in club out here that are at wichita they put together a flithy team these past couple years, and repping the MVC gotta like that.
30. The whole missouri valley is always tough
