I am a Libertarian. To me a balanced budget amendment makes perfect sense. I know there are people who oppose this. If you oppose a balanced budget amendment could you please explain why ? If this is a repost sorry.

How do you enforce it? Does the Supreme Court have to rule if a bill is budget neutral? -
If there had been a balanced budget amendment passed in 1936 Adolf Hitler would have lived to be a very old man.

doesn't it make sense to have a balanced budget period? what happens to your household if you operate without one for too long... or any business.... oh wait, the government is all-knowning all-seeing all-powerful and not subject to things like common fn sense

I'm a little behind on the topic. Is it political theater because the concept is just not enforceable/practical in that you never know what you're going to need money for (war, natural disasters, economic disasters, etc)? That's what I would assume, but I don't know the language behind the ammendment. Although when I first heard it was being considered as an amendment to the constitution, I thought it was probably over the top.

Difference between our government and a household or business is that it is legal for the government to counterfeit money. Therefore they don't really have to have a balanced budget.

I see what you mean but to Underdogs point, you could never buy a house unless you paid cash for it with a true balanced budget. I know this is a bit different but you get the point. I also think we need to slash to surpluses at this point because we are in such a hole. Balance is not even sustainable with how much we owe -
This is from the last paper I ever wrote. Not that anyone cares, I just felt like doing a little copy/ paste.

Question Presented
You have asked us to analyze potential constitutional issues that may arise if S.J.RES 3 (hereafter referred to as the Balanced Budget Amendment), proposed on January 26, 2011 by Senators Orrin Hatch and John Cornyn, becomes the next Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Brief Answer
Although balancing the federal budget is a worthy policy goal for Congress to pursue, it is not wise to draft a Constitutional Amendment mandating Congress to pass a balanced budget. If Congress would fail to balance the budget themselves, then it is unclear what lengths the executive and judicial branches would take to enforce the Amendment. Either branch stepping in to enforce the Amendment would upset the traditional separation of powers principles that grants Congress the exclusive authority to determine the federal outlays and receipts. But if neither branch takes the initiative to balance the budget when Congress fails to do so, then the Balanced Budget Amendment would represent an empty promise in the charter of our nation.
Virtually all Balanced Budget Amendment proposals include exceptions for wartime or national emergency expenditures. -
Simple get rid of banks everyone uses cash or gold or some other fair from of trade (ass, grass, food, items whatever)
If you cant pay for something you dont buy it... pretty damn easy.
Credit and Credit cards are the cause of this.
Dont use either and never will. -
and I totally get this... but for instance, I have more income than my outgo, even with my mortgage... I don't have a negative balance sheet every month and continue to spend money... therein lies the difference
