A potential Stone Temple Pilots reunion tour in the works for this summer got me thinking of bands who broke up or changed names when the lead singer left, but mainly those who have changed lead singers and retained their original name. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I started to make a list, and thought OT would probably be able to add to it, especially as this list reflects my musical taste.. thought it might be an interesting thread, but most likely crickets and tumbleweeds...
Bands that got better or stayed good with new lead singer
- Iron Maiden - not bad before with Paul Di'Anno, but Bruce gave them tons of kick ass songs
- AC/DC - Arguable that they are better with Brian Johnson than Bon Scott, but at least a wash, both kicked ass
- Pink Floyd - Syd was good, but kind of a freak.. things took off when Roger took over. And then again when Waters left, although they weren't the same, they produced some solid albums with Gilmore at the helm.
There was one more big one in this category I had thought of, but can't remember right now..
Bands that didn't
- Black Sabbath - although they had a couple good songs with RJD, it was blasphemy that they continued to callt he band Black Sabbath throughout various incarnations
- Van Halen - Again, not a terrible band with Haggar, but it is definitely not van halen without DLR.
- Judas Priest - barely counts as that cover band guy was only there for a couple albums.
More? Thoughts? -
STP might have a reunion tour? I hope that happens, I've seen Velvet Revolver and while they are good they aren't STP. Weiland was also looking a lot healthier, not all skin and bones like usual.
Genesis comes to mind, I think they were better with Phil Collins but Peter Gabriel is very talented obv.
INXS obv worse with whoever the new guy is.
Seems like a major 60s/70s rock band I'm leaving out.... -
saosin, changed the whole style of music
-
I liked VH better with Haggar... shoot me, DLR is retarted
-
Journey- Steve Perry was not the original lead singer
Obviously Genesis.
AC/DC
I actually prefer the Haggar version of Van Halen. Did you know that they sold more records and had more hits with Sammy than they did with Dave? -
rumpelstiltskin grinder's first singer left and they still sound good
www.myspace.com/rumpelstiltskingrinder -
Deep Purple ... Ian Gillian replaced Rod Evans as the lead singer. Great decision.
-
In 1953 the Johnnie Johnson Trio switched lead singers. Chuck Berry took over. Rock and Roll soon became somewhat popular.

for the <30 metal crowd I select Killswitch Engage for bands that got better.

yeah, that's the rumor http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/158...e_pilots.jhtml
but you never know with Weiland. Would be awesome if they pull it off. Yeah, forgot about Genesis, good call.
As far as Sammy vs Dave, Van Halen was essentially two different bands with those guys.. i like Haggar, but Van Halen with Diamond Dave had soooo many better songs.. -
There was another singer in Journey before Steve Perry. He was really good too.
Edit: Someone beat me to it, -
i just wanted to add , audioslave blows
-
Rage Against The Machine got seven million times better with Chris Cornell (so what if they changed their name).
-
(in response to Killswitch)
I was devestated when Jesse left, but when I found out that Howard from Blood Has Been Shed was replacing him it cured the depression. Not only that, they brought in Justin on drums from the same band and that guy is incredible...used to chat with the Candiria forum boards. -
yeah... they were essentially two different bands, they didn't do nearly as much "Raging" with Cornell, so the name change was probably necessary and a good thing imo.
I just think it's interesting that some bands keep their name, while others have changed. -
Rage>Audioslave
IMO -
I know you guys dont like Creed but Alter Bridge is pretty good. Myles Kennedy is alot better singer than Stapp is..
-
AC DC didn't get better after the singer change, but ya know, they didn't get BAD.
-
Bands that got better
Norma Jean: They aren't very good, but they're a hell of a lot better with this guy.
Between the Buried & Me: Totally changed the sound
Mastodon: Didn't really care for their original singer. Never replacing him was the best move.
Shadows Fall: It's hard to say if they got better or worse since the original lineup has pretty much all branched into other awesome bands. See All That Remains and Seemless.
Bands that got worse:
Killswitch Engage: I'm sorry, Howard's awesome and all but Jesse was the shit.
Into Eternity: Incredible band, but not nearly as good. -
rage is not better with new singer! plz. (except for them being less political then yes) audioslave was a good band in its own right, they just were not rage anymore. its beter to think of them as a new band...even though they are over now.
velvet revolver is the same way, i loved them live but i dont think of them as stp or guns and roses but the music is more gnr so i like it. i didnt want to see stp anyhow so i was good!
ac/dc was better with bon scott, most people dont notice it much but i do. his personality on stage ruled and i liked something in his voice better. good thing he was not writing all the songs! dont get me wrong, i love them both but i miss bon. still a must see band if you have not seen them yet. one of my favorite bands of all time. -
Alice in Chains has a new singer that I havent heard yet but for some reason I dont think they will be as good w/ out Layne.
-
Anthrax definitely got worse
Corrosion of Conformity got better imo -
Alice in Chains is Def. worse w/o Layne
Cannibal Corpse's George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher is better than the 1st guy imo -
Forgot about Anthrax, i agree definitely worse.. I got to see them back with Joey a couple years back.. it kicked ass!
-
Floyd did a lot more instrumental stuff when Syd was around and if I remember correctly I don't think they really broke through until he was off in the mountains tripping on acid (aka out of the band). I read somewhere that he came to the studio when they were recording Wish You Were Here and none of them recognized him. Shine on you crazy diamond!

Anybody suggesting Audioslave > than Rage should be banned immd.

Joy Divison much more successful as New Order, but I thought Ian Curtis was pretty incredible, so I'm torn.
Kansas was better before the singer switch methinks. -
umm Lynyrd & CCR
