Water skier Fernando Reina Iglesias breaks a water skiing world record (Picture: ITN)
Iglesias attempted the feat in his home city of Acapulco, Mexico, and managed to smash the 22-year-old record after reaching speeds of 153mph.
He dedicated the achievement to his hometown.
It was the second time the businessman had attempted to better the 135mph reached by US water skier Scott Pellaton in 1989, and he managed it with the help of a low-flying helicopter which towed him across the water.
"We reached a speed of 153 miles per hour in our second attempt. We had to abort our first attempt because the helicopter was going up and pulling my feet out of the water. So, we succeeded in breaking the Guinness Record in our second attempt," he told NDTV.
Iglesias' record-breaking feat can be seen on YouTube and has already racked up over a hundred views.
Last year, a water skiing club in Australia broke the world record for the most skiers to be towed by a single boat.
In total, 114 members of the Horsehead Water Ski Club were towed, smashing the previous record of 100.
