Did anyone else notice on the ESPN MLB Stats page they added a graphic for top 5 in AL and NL oWAR? This had to have been added very recently.

+1. Sabermetrics alert:
Cueto has the third highest LOB% in the league, behind two other guys who are performing way above expectation: Ryan Vogelsong and Jordan Zimmerman. Cueto also has the lowest percentage of homers given up in the league on fly balls. Cueto putting up a 2.52 ERA when his home park is GABP is impressive. But it's not like he's an extreme ground ball pitcher or even a big K guy. If you think Cueto is basically inducing fly ball outs to the OF, I'd have to say that's not a game plan, but rather just flat out luck. On paper, he appears to be the luckiest pitcher in the league. I know he's done this for two seasons, but count me among the skeptics for now. -
lol, if only the season ended today.....somehow you have the mvp and cy young coming from a team that will be lucky to make the playoffs in the al. Awards are won in September, when the pressure is on, so predicting now is just dumb. Having said that, of course I'll speculate as well.

AL MVP- Mike Trout
NL Cy Young- Dickey
AL Cy Young- Weaver
NL ROY- Wade Miley
AL ROY- Trout
I think the Cy Young awards in each league are super close, and I wouldn't have a problem with picking Verlander or someone like Cueto over Weaver and Dickey. The rest of the awards seem pretty clear cut at this moment.
AL
mvp - Reddick
cy - Verlander (just edging out Weaver and Felix)
roy - Trout
moy - Scioscia (coaxing these kinds of numbers from Trout and Trumbo is a magic trick)
NL
mvp - McCutcheon (with Posey coming up fast)
cy - Dickey (with all kinds of guys in the hunt)
roy - Cozart (my preseason pick, so im sticking with him)
moy - Mattingly -
Without reddick the a's are 25 games out...I've said before I think MVP should go to a player from a playoff team (unless someone is just having a ridiculous year, ala bonds).

As for scioscia, I stated why he should be MOY. -
What's your rationale for Cozart then? You must really be liking that <.700 OPS and 12 HR's a lot more than the rest of us.
-
If you read my post then you would see that after his name i put in parentheses (my preseason pick so I'm sticking with him). That was my reason for picking him, had nothing to do with if he deserves it or not.

Read the whole post next time. -

Edited By: LarsonLarsen Aug 8th, 2012 at 09:29 PMI think, for the first half anyway, that distinction would have to go to Dempster. But he's crashing back to Earth now so my post is pointless.Originally Posted by Pghfan987

agree with krs and pgh, i dont feel silly at all, hes still not a top 5 or 10 pitcher in the NL. he might be top 15. i dont even follow all the sabermetrics stats and i still knew that he was running way above EV on things like balls in play and fly balls. never seen a guy get in and out of trouble as much as him and put up that low of an era.

Josh Reddick, 19 WAR player. Nevermind the year Yoenis Cespedes is having, or the fact that they're pitching has been outstanding. Let's heap all the praise onto the guy with a .333 OBP.
-
Who gets left out of the rotation when everyone is finally healthy in Oakland?
Griffin, Milone, Anderson, Colon, Blackley, Braden, Straily, McCarthy, Parker.
What a load of arms. -
Scott brewer is raping this fucking thread so had right now
Couldn't disagree more about cueto. Watch him pitch, he's a fcking artist out there in a hitters ballpark and leads the nl in war. What more does he have to do? Lol krs uses war as the be all end all of stats, but isn't convinced about cueto?'what the fuck? -
I think they use xfip as the end all stat for pitchers around here
-
I don't use WAR as the be all by any means. I don't particularly like position player WAR because I don't think UZR is an accurate way of measuring defense

I would think Milone, Parker, and Anderson are going to be locks. Straily most likely as well. Braden is coming back from shoulder surgery, which is a much riskier thing than Tommy John. McCarthy and Colon are free agents next year. But yeah, a good problem to have considering what the rotation looked like 2 years ago.

WAR isn't definitive, it's just the most useful stat if you just use one. It's a lot easier to say that someone is a 5 WAR player instead of churning out a dozen relevant stats.
-
Right. I'm not going to call someone the MVP because his 6.8 WAR is better than the other guy's 6.3 WAR. It does help differentiate between superstar/all star/solid regular etc...

Neil Walker starting to separate himself from the pack among NL second basemen. 2-for-3 with a double, homer, and 5 RBIs today.
Starling Marte is a huge wild card for the Pirates' future. He hit his fourth homer today after being called up two weeks ago. His plate discpline sucks, but his tools are absurd. More raw power and better defense than Cutch. -
Brandon Crawford just made a beautiful play on a liner in the hole to save a run for Vogelsong. Giants currently 7th in baseball in defensive efficiency.
