I was given guitar lessons as a gift recently. I've always wanted to learn how to play and the lessons were a great surprise. Now I'm motivated to actually learn. I cant take lessons without a guitar obviously lolz. What do you guys recommend? Dont need anything fancy or special but something decent I guess. Thanks~

What's your pice range? Take a look at seagulls..they get great reviews and u can pick up a used one for around 300-400
-
taylor big baby is a good one.
-
I dont know about prices etc. Anything you guys could recommend would be great. I obviously dont want to spend too much
-
I got a Takamine when I was in that same spot...
-
Yamaha, only around $130 bucks

Bought my first acoustic last year, a Yamaha FG730S. Think I got it for $250, but I forget. Anyway, I have nothing to compare it to really but I'm happy with my purchase and have only heard good things about the cheaper Yamahas as far as being solid for the price.

I'm taking a guitar lesson class for beginners at school. I bought an Ibanez SGT120 Sage Series for $180. It's a beginners guitar that isn't too expensive.
I got the Trans Red Sunburst. Looks pretty sweet. Plays great too.

cosign on the seagull. you cannot beat the quality for the price. enjoy. learning this one tonite. edit: op i have played everything from yamahas to taks to ibanezs to nice taylors and martins. youre not ready for a taylor and a taylor bigbaby wil not prepare you to play a big guitar. i cannot stress how bad ass seagulls are for the price. only guitar i own other than my original yamaha.

That dudes got a good voice.

The Ibanez SGT120 seems like a great price for the product at $180. I looked up Seagulls on Amazon and kind of balking about paying $350-$500. I'll wait a bit more for others opinions but the SGT120 is looking good right now

Edited By: iLLNuGWichee Jan 23rd, 2012 at 01:38 AMIt's a good choice for a beginner. You won't invest a ton like the Taylor's and Seagull's. You don't need to invest a lot in your first guitar because you may not continue to play after you start to get into it. Then you won't have $400+ sunk into something you don't use anymore.Originally Posted by DONKWOOD

Be sure to pick up some picks, a capo, and a guitar tuner with your same shipment if you get it online. I got free shipping on everything so it was a good value. It wouldn't hurt to get a beginners book either, although you can find used books other places I'm sure. Obviously you can use the internet too, but I don't like playing in front of my computer every time I play.
Also, if you get it at guitarcenter then google a promo code and you should be able to find at least 10% off. -
I understand why you say this, but in retrospect it is incorrect. A used seagull will retain its secondhand value and may appreciate over time. My first guitar was a yamaha which i still play today because it is a cutaway. However, it does not sound anything near a seagull. Nor is it as playable as a seagull.

Playability is key for a beginner. Thats why so many people go with a baby taylor (low action). However, overall a seagull is the best guitar for value ever made and it is not even close. There can be no debate on this. It is fact. -
I don't know enough about the subject to debate you on it. My opinion is I don't want to invest more than $200 in a guitar at a beginner. If you can find a seagull, hand me down or not, for that price then go for it. But I know for me, even if I quit for some time on the guitar I would never sell it unless I was just dying for money. So the seagull retaining it's value to me is a moot point.

I totally understand that. I did the same as you and even owned an Ibanez which I liked. I just can't stress how solid seagulls are. Sold my Martin and Taylor because I never played them (One reason being is that I wouldnt play my Taylor after a few drinks and never really got to know it because I treated it like a baby because it was so pretty).

Get a Seagull -
got to agree with illnug. If I like playing and get halfway decent I guess I can look into a Seagull down the road. I think for now the SGT is my best bet. but thanks for the post Phish, I appreciate it

for sure. most important thing is to enjoy playing. it will be very very frustrating at first. dont give up. -
Thanks guys. About to order the SGT now. Who knows, maybe I'll post up a youtube video in a year or so and all of OT can tell me to STFU, GTFO, etc etc

Agree with Yamaha. Lots of good ones cheap.

Took my first guitar lesson yesterday. I can now play the rhythm to "Every Rose Has its Thorn". Holy shit, thats all I've been practicing today hahaha. Having a blast! I'm practicing my C, C add 9, Em and G now. Very frustrating for sure since I just started but also fun at the same time. Going to give it my all and hopefully stick with it. BTW the SGT-120 is a great guitar for me. My instructor even complimented it~
