  1. I have about $800 to spend on a TV for my dorm room this year, recommendations please? Would like to get at least 32'' but preferably bigger.
  2. I got a really good deal on my LG 40" for $999 at conns...I think its worth the extra 200 bucks to step up to something bigger.

For the 32" tv's, alot of my friends have the VIZIO. You can get these for cheap at WalMart.
  3. <h1 title="42" plasma="" home="" theater="" +="" install="" $690="">42" Plasma + Home Theater + Install $690</h1> BestBuy.com has a Panasonic 42" 720P Plasma TV plus Philips Home Theater System plus installation for $689.98 after this $200 rebate. Here's how it works: add the Panasonic TH-42PX80U Plasma TV, Philips 5.1 Channel Home Theater and Geek Squad Installation to your cart. The total will be $889.98 for all three before the rebate. Select their free in-store pickup to save on delivery. Warning: don't expect the $690 price to last very long! If you don't see $889.98 in your cart, consider this dead. Of note: CircuitCity has just the TV for $1000! Click Here
  4. What MUPP said. I have that TV, got it on a similar deal a few months back. It's great - with a 42" tv, you have to be sitting mighty close (less than 5 feet) to notice the difference between 768p and 1080p.

  5. I wouldnt' buy a plasma, but thats just me...
  6. don't get a plasma. and try to get a 1080

Statements like these show how misinformed most consumers are about LCD vs. plasma, and the issue of resolution. I was the same way until I started reading a whole lot before buying a tv, mostly on AVSForum. Besides the very top-of-the-line LCDs like Samsung 650 and whatever the newest Sony is, plasmas are much better than LCD for motion smoothness, contrast, black level (affects color richness), etc. Plus, they're cheaper than comparably sized LCDs. LCD screens are attractive at big stores b/c they're brighter, but that gets turned down at home anyway, and the Panny plasmas are the brightest on the market. Also, most experts put resolution at #3 or 4 in terms of picture quality, and like I said earlier, there is a physiological limit for the human eye which prevents it from distinguishing 768p (which is what "720p" plasmas really are) from 1080p past certain distances from the screen. The other thing is that plasmas legitimately do not suffer from burn in at all anymore, and Pannys don't buzz like some brands do. Basically, if you want a really good, cheap flat panel, follow MUPP's link.

  8. what you dont mention is plasmas will knock up you electric bill quite a bit but in a dorm i doubt that would be an issue however the extra heat likely will be an issue
  9. I have the 42 inch panasonic and 50 inch panasonic and they are great and I have not noticed extra heat or an increase in electricity costs.
  10. i got a 42 inch vizio a year ago with warranty was near a grand im sure now its much cheaper....great picture 4 the price

  11. EDIT: I'm an idiot, now it's showing up as the correct price..solid deal. Trying to decide between that or the 42'' Vizio, which looks a little nicer but is more expensive and comes without the home theater system.

  12. Unless you just have to have your TV on the wall, I'd go with a DLP when it comes to screen size/price. I just bought a 57" samsung DLP 1080 for obv more than 800 but I woulda been lucky to find a 42" LCD for anywhere close to the price. FWIW, financing TV's at big box stores is a great deal.
  13. The deal mupp posted is really good! Def chk that one out. I was going to go with plasma over LCD b4 I bought my TV only b/c of the price difference, just as good a TV and better in certain cases (i.e. sports).
  14. Unfortunately it looks like Best Buy is sold out of the home theater system and 'geek squad installation' online.
