Sonny Rollins is a very good choice. Also Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock for those into jazz. Denyce Graves for opera fans.

Chuck Berry and Little Richard are rock'n'roll pioneers. Prince is one of the versatile musicians around. -
Just going with guitar players here.
Prince, Slash, BB King, Vernon Reid, Buddy Guy
My all time favorite artist (black or white) Jimi Hendrix doesn't make it cause he's dead.
No, rappers are not musicians. Entertainers, yes... Musicians no. I always have to try and not chuckle when I meet someone and they find out I play guitar and then they say "Fo Realz dog I'ma musician too" then I say "really? what do you play? I'm always looking for people to write with" then they say "I'm tryyina make it in dis rap game son wit my verse" I'll admit I can't rap but I bet if I worked at it for a few months I could. Doubt Young Wayne or Lil Jeezy could do what a decent guitar player or drummer or vocalist could do w/o years of practice. -
Ever since I heard Alicia Keys sing live I have no respect for vocal abilities, she is absolutely horrible live.
I think John Legend (great voice and music), Kanye (good rapper, excellent producer, very versatile) Lupe Fiasco (Japanese Cartoon showed his wide range of talent), The Roots, Outkast...that's all I got right now
I feel like you made that last part up, but anyways one of the key definitions of musician is someone who makes music, whether you like the music they make or not does not mean you can change the definition. -
came in to say TV On the Radio who is one of the best bands out right now. Someone beat me to it.

To me a rapper and a musician are two completely different things just as someone who is just a great guitarist or drummer is different than someone who plays and is a composer.

And yes, I may have been exaggerating the slang a bit but I've had several conversations like the one I posted and I've helped hip hop guys with tracks and watched them record and it was fun but it doesn't require the same level of skill as writing and producing a rock/jazz/metal/country/classical track. It's not something you have to practice for 20 years to be good at.
I like some hip hop (mainly older stuff) and didn't mean to sound like a music snob. I guess the only point I'm trying to make is I disagree with putting people like Lil Wayne or Wakka Flakka Flame on the same level as Jimi Hendrix or Prince. -
what a weird thread title.
-
I just saw them at an Obama rally on the 10'th, and they were pretty fucking great actually. They have a few whiteys in the group, but I think they still fall under the OP's umbrella.

EDIT: I hope that Billy Ocean post wasn't a joke because that man rocks!!!
-
Understood. And I also disagree with including Lil Wayne and Wack Flacka in this discussion.

ez game

Stevie Wonder is the man.
-
Well, based on that logic singers are not musicians either.
Anyone can make music, the point of this thread is who does it the best.
