just contributing to a great collection of hip hop
If the question is what gets the most play at this point in my life, the answer is insanely lopsided at MF doom, I can kick back to secret herbs and spices box set for days -
Pac
Biggie
Eminem
Too Short
Jay Z -
facepalm.

It's not a matter of avoiding "being mainstream" (i've been out of high school for quite a while now). Its a matter of Wayne having the most nasally, whiney voice and hearing him rap about either A) How cool he is or B) that he's Birdmans kid (as if Birdman is a legend). Wayne is a hustler making a living selling records to people who aren't actually listening to his content. If you like his music that's fine but trying to say that lyrically he is better than Sage just means you haven't listened to Sage.
Oh and he calls himself Lil' ffs -
cant come up with my top so here's my top 5:
Edited By: DAWS May 1st, 2012 at 03:22 PM
rakim
nas
big
tupac
knowledge reigns supreme over nearly everyone
HM to korupt BDK jigga kool g rap
** Edit - I know I'm dating myself here but I don't think the younger hip hop fans understand how big the KRS/BDP vs Big Daddy Kane/Juice Crew debate was in late 80's-90. Everyone in junior high/high school was rocking a high top fade and they actually shaved KRS/BDP or a cane/Big Daddy carved into their fades... there wasn't the media then of big/tupac and maybe it was just a regional thing but in junior high/high school this was just as big or bigger. The kids from the projects would actually claim their project as a KRS/BDP project or a Kane/Juice Crew project and shave their heads accordingly -
Nas/Jay/Biggie
No particular order:
Talib Kweli
Rakim
Black Thought
Pharoahe Monche
Mos Def
Big L
Thats a top 9..... lol @ lil' Wayne. To me it's like someone saying suzanne colins is one of the top 5 writers of all time. Idiots. -

Reason: and crunchy black -
i don't know, black people stuff? does it matter? -
To me, it's either Em or Pac. No other artists stir up emotions from their lyrics, like these 2 did. They were so powerful and influential that they reached a market beyond hip hop fans. They forever changed the game.

Honourable mentions to Big L, Redman, Pharaohe Monch, Biggie, Talib, and Big Pun.
Reason: and Bone, Thugs and Harmony. -
I can't believe it's page 6 and nobody has pointed out how much OP fucking sucks.

in my mind, this helps prove my point.

first, if you think sage francis > lil wayne, you're definitely a rap hipster. no sense fighting it.
second, the fact that you're older makes you way more susceptible to thinking that you are somehow smarter or more sophisticated because you're not going to like the popular/mainstream music. those stupid kids "aren't actually listening to his content." it's a superiority thing.
third, the ironic thing about people who levy these hefty criticisms is that they're mostly self-defeating. people try to intellectualize rap, but then make broad and unfair generalizations about why other people are bad. in your case, "hearing him rap about either A) How cool he is or B) that he's Birdmans kid (as if Birdman is a legend)" and "making a living selling records to people who aren't actually listening to his content." wayne obviously raps about more than the first two categories, and you're deluding yourself if you think the second is actually true.
if we had this thread 15 years ago, you'd be the type of person talking about how wack jay-z and nas are.
NO. and that's the point. not everything has to be immortal technique ffs. -

I just listen to whatever is on the radio now, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen, etc.
Some of the stuff in this thread I haven't heard before and will need to digest.
Most got mention, but here's a few more:
Lauryn Hill (Fugees - The Score album is amazing)
(Wyclef's "The Carnival" was my intro to the hip hop genre)
Jurassic Five - (fun, remind me of T Called Quest-who are the tits) Charlie Tuna
B-Real, not a huge fan, but a good rapper (Psycho Realm)
RZA - Wu Tang obv mentioned, but isn't RZA the one behind it all. not sure who my fav WuTang is though.
Any Euro rappers? I have a song to post if I can find it. -
Best rapper is OBV LIL BOOSIE
-
that's because you're an old man
