  1. The ESPN kind. Is there anyone who likes sports who doesn't enjoy his work?

Read his latest gem right here bishes
  2. I like him, but he's a massive Boston homer.

  3. He's my hero
  4. best in the business. he needs to post moar tho lol
  5. his article on that clippers loss to cavs was best sports article ive ever read
    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...p;sportCat=nba
  6. This guy is the best. Rick Reilly has learned the hard way that when you leave one major company (SI) and try to take on Bill Simmons you have no chance.
  7. I just wish he'd get away from the Podcasts. He needs to go back to his 2-3 written columns per week.

But yeah, I'm a big fan - and it helps that I am big Boston homer as well.
    ---------------
Quick story. My mother passed away in 2002. My parents divorced in 1983 and my mother moved away a few years later. While I didn't get to see my mother that much, the two things we always talked about when we did talk was the Red Sox and the Patriots. Well, the last time that I saw my mother was the Super Bowl that the Patriots won. While I got to share that with my mother, we never did get to celebrate a Red Sox championship together. This is Simmons' running diary of Game 4 with the Red Sox in 2004. Go to 8:44 - the first two sentences just get me every time.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...simmons/041028

I think those two sentences more than anything I've ever read summarizes the love that people have for their sports teams. It didn't matter which team it was - it was the fact that sports unites people - family, friends and strangers.

^^^^ so true Reilly should be opening Simmons' mail instead of writing a column

well, he was originally the BostonSportsGuy ... and that is his point of view: the common fan and he is obv a fan of Boston teams.
  10. reilly doesn't even belong in the same stratosphere as simmons. seems really nice in person too
  11. His mailbags are the best thing on the internet outside of porn when it's useful. I read a couple spots up about him being a homer and while that's true, he gives respect to any individual/team that deserves it. He says great things about the Colts and 90's Pacers who have been rivals of both the Pats and Celts at different times. Mad love for Simmons work.

  12. simmons is great, even if all he knows is nba, nfl gambling and red sox

but it's silly to compare him to reilly. the only thing they have in common is they try to be funny. but they're really very different.

Oddly enough, I love sports, I love the Red Sox and I do not like Bill Simmons.

I used to read him religiously between like 02-04'. But, he really upset me with how he wrote about Nomar Garciaparra (once calling him the "Ben Affleck") of baseball. It was frustrating how Nomar changed the face of the Red Sox, had as much or talent as A-Rod before his injuries, and Bill simmons completely writes him off when he gets injured.

I was able to get passed that and continue reading him. That was until, the '04 world series when Bill Simmons (self proclaimed biggest Red Sox fan) left in the middle of world series game to go to starbucks. Love the red sox or hate them, there is no denying how much that world championship affected so many people. Sports Illustrated did a series of letters afterward that brought tears to my eyes about how much passion and meaning those come from behind wins against the yankees and then sweeping the cardinals meant to other people and myself. Then, Bill Simmons who claims to have so much passion for the red sox and boston sports, leaves in the middle of what should be one of the most defining and memorable moments of his life to go to starbucks, give me a fucking break. I couldn't take him seriously after that.

    Where did you hear this?
  15. Simmons talks about it in the Game 4 diary column that someone links to in this thread.

Fwiw, he left during the 3rd inning and only missed the 4th. He also happens to be the best sports writer that Im aware of so...maybe let something go that happened 4.5 years ago?

Maybe the Starbucks was inside the stadium?

he was in LA (in his house) but I hardly think this warrants bearing a grudge for 4+ years lol
  19. My bad...I havent read that diary in such a long time.
  20. Simmons = God

And F the podcast haters. His podcast > his columns IMO. His latest podcast with Jacko was amazing.

  21. Near the end of Game 2, he wandered over to the Boston bench after a whistle and lingered there pretending to be disappointed about a call -- breaking the NBA code of "don't hang out for too long near someone's bench," because, you know, he's a complete jerk that way -- and I was screaming at Kevin Garnett (on my TV), "PUNCH HIM! PUNCH HIM! DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY WITH THIS! YOU'RE NOT PLAYING ANYWAY! PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE!!!!" I hate Joakim Noah. I hate him.

this excerpt from last week is one of my favorites ever.

I would ammend that to be: any podcast with adam carolla > mailbag > podcast > regular column. with the rare marathon chats probably trumping all of those.

Any podcast with Chuck Klosterman or Jacko trumps all. Carolla is great, though.

  28. good call on klosterman. He is a great guest; his takes on things are always very interesting.

  30. See I prefer his writing because it's much better to read a column then listen to a Podcast while at work (headphones or not)

Anyway he's not writing as much right now becuase he's working on his NBA ook which sounds really good. The NBA is definitely his speciality. I disagree with a lot of his NFL stuff though.

The best used to be when Deadspin when run Big Daddy Drew's Thursday football preview followed by a Simmons 384738947394783 word mailbag on Friday. that shit was tight
