It's no great shock to learn that 19-year-old college student in South Carolina provoked a storm of protests after he'd hung a Confederate flag from his dorm room window. But here's the twist: The student in question, Byron Thomas, is black.
"I know it's kind of weird because I'm black," Thomas said in a video he posted online in response to his school's request that he take the flag down.

I still own a confederate flag that I had hung up in my room till I was about 22yrs old. But I went to a southern racist school who's mascot was the "Rebels" so I had an excuse.

[X] Many people find the confederate flag racist

Went to a high school with the same mascot. Went from being a Wadsworth Grizzly to a Haralson County Rebel when I moved from Ohio. Culture shock to say the least. Have never owned a confederate flag myself. Just thought this was really strange considering every one of my black friends in school would never have considered doing this. There was a huge ordeal over a giant Confederate flag that was painted on the outside of our gym. When they had to remodel to meet fire code they left it off. Huge outrage ensued. School vote took place. They put it back up. Not sure if its still there or not as I never go. Remember thinking it was funny watching one high school's team bus (basketball) park in front of the flag before games and get themselves all pumped up. Then proceed to come in and drill us by 40.

I'd be proud to have him as a friend and have a beer with him anywhere, anytime, just as I would anybody else who loves the South.

(copy/pastes one of his old rants about how its fucking retarded to use the confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride)

This.if its about pride the South should design a flag with sweet tea, various pies and a pictorial of siblings fucking -
I would like to buy this man a beer, or an incredible hulk, or whatever the hell he wants.
I'm not big on Confederate stuff in the least but i really like the way our generation is going when it deals with sensitive race issues that need to be bygones.
South has the hottest girls, coupled with the west (Cali and Arizona).Originally Posted by dolphin13

so if its sibling fucking thats making that happen, well, i'll drink my sweet tea, rock in my rocking chair and giggle at the pasties in the north. -
so because slavery was one component of the time of the (beginning of) the confederate flag, that means the confederate flag only represents racism and slavery?

People are so dumb. It's not like the confederate flag was around for 100 years. The flag in the OP was created as a battle flag during a war fought about slavery. I don't really give that big of a fuck because I'm not black and don't live in the South. I just laughter at the denial and the "it represents so much more" arguments

Rebel Flags: If you love them or hate them, society would probably be better off without your idiocy and lack of priorities.

maybe he doesn't know he's black.

I can agree with that change Dyz -
Pretty simplistic way to characterize that war. Even my liberal, commie, state controlled public schooling taught me there were a lot more factors than slavery.

i fail to see how anything i said is technically incorrect. i even put (beginning of) since i am educated and know of its origins. And, it IS still around. so, um, just cause you agree with Dolphin does not make me wrong.

Yeah, because it is a pretty simple fucking reason they fought the war. SLAVERY. You can argue states rights until your blue in the face but if the north outlawed all toothpicks in the South, I doubt the South would have seceded (although you would have been crazy enough to advocate for secession because that's just how you roll)

But maybe you're going to argue taxation or one of the many other contributing factors that I'm willing o stipulate were contributing factors. But at the end of the fucking day slavery is by far and away the main reason why the South seceded and the north responded by invading. -
I agree with it being the most important reason why they seceded but I would argue with you that ending slavery had very little to do with why Lincoln responded by invading.
-
ok, ok. It started off representing the desire for slavery, then was kept by sore losers after the war to show their continued support for slavery, then some really sore losers continued to keep it around and told their grandchildren (who thought their support for slavery was idiotic) that it was really about Southern pride and States' rights and some of the stupider ones bought it.

So... it was first about slavery, then it was about slavery, then it was about slavery but was purported to be about something else, then people just said it was about something else. Kind of like the Civil War itself.
Dyz, isn't it fun to read Mark Twain telling about all the "other issues" the Civil War was about?
And Slap, gl to you on your peaceful foray into OT. Hope it lasts
