Cox is a real player's coach and that's gone a long way toward achieving his status as being one of the winningest managers in major league history.
His achilles heel has been his horrendous record as a play-off manager and I think you can attribute that to his cluelessness in handling his pitching staff. He always waits until the game is pretty much out of reach before he'll go out and pull the pitcher once they get into a jam.
That strategy isn't real smart during the regular season, but when you try to manage like that in the play-offs, you're basically dooming your team to an early exit. If he'd just taken a six-month leave of absence at the end of every regular season the Braves would probably have won at least five or six World Series instead of just one during the time they had the best pitching staff in the league. -
Trails TLR among active managers in wins.
