Amphetamines in a medicine designed to combat attention deficit disorder caused rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes took to test positive for performance enhancers, a source confirmed Saturday.
Spikes, suspended Friday by the NFL for the remainder of the regular season, said in a statement Friday, "The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking. It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug. The integrity of the game is very important to me. I understand the league’s ruling and apologize to my teammates, the fans and the Patriots organization for this mistake."
Adderall, a common drug used in the treatment of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), contains amphetamines which are listed as a performance enhancer by the NFL.
It's not known whether Spikes was taking Adderall specifically or a similar medication. -
We'll that kinda sucks for him. He should have chcked it out first but I would think a ADHD medication could be allowed.
-
If it contains banned substances it wouldn't make much sense to allow it.

Aren't there a lot of masking agents that they make look like normal everyday meds? I'm not saying he's cheating or deserves the suspension but I'm sure the NFL was just playing it safe.
-
yeah, speed won't help any athlete perform, don't see the problem here.
-
welp.....go bears
-
This sucks but the Pats are still taking this one.

MLB makes an exception for ADHD drugs with prior approval but I don't think the NFL does.

I believe last number I heard was something like MLB had 130+ players were granted the exception last year.
Sorry it was 105 players -
Hi, I'm a professional athlete. I'm gonna take something without getting it approved by the team medical staff first. Deserved.

Edited By: xxbossmanxx Dec 11th, 2010 at 08:00 PMThat is a ridic huge number. Are you kidding me? Over 100 grown men in MLB just happen to need this drug. I bet the ratio of % users nationwide vs. % in MLB is way off.Originally Posted by chs3rd

Exactly which is why there shouldn't be exceptions.

Look how many Californians suddenly developed glaucoma when medical pot became available.
People will always game the system -
Adderall is like candy for college students.

Sorry for ignorance but is Spikes a significant player on Pats? Starter or role player? Seem like they have always plugged in gaps fine
-
he's a solid rookie player but 4 games for that is kind of redic... OBv not something to enhance his game

Edited By: JRoth15 Dec 11th, 2010 at 11:28 PMI think he starts at LB, but he's definitely replaceable.Originally Posted by LostProphets

He had one of the picks of Sanchez last week. -
Gary Guyton played inside linebacker all last year for the Pats next to Mayo so he will have to do. I can't help but be nervous after Baltimore's Ray Rice broke off 159 yards in the playoffs last year running at Guyton. Dane Fletcher (undrafted free agent ) will probably get some time as well.I think 4 games is extreme and will have an impact on the Pats 1st and 2nd down run defense.

Reason: spelltard -
spikes is the 2nd leading tackler on the pats D.
their D was already mayo vs 11. this isnt helping anything -

Patriots gonna Belichick, I guess.
edge: less fatigue.
