The owner of a Brooklyn 99 Cent store has been given $30,000 in fines for carrying Cowboy play sets that include a plastic toy gun. Fine is $5,000 each toy, 6 on the shelf = $30,000. Obviously cannot pay this, so is being forced to close.

Guns have a big orange plastic tip on them and could never be mistaken for real - they are in the set, along with a mask, toy badge, and little plastic cuffs:
NYC has a regulation making it illegal to sell 'real looking' toy guns so cops don't confuse them with the real thing and shoot someone.

Is there an official scorer person who gets to determine if the gun looks real enough to be deemed illegal?
oh and in before the owners race is mentioned -
so you can sell real guns, but not toy ones?
wait, just seen he is a muslim type dude...
nothing to see here -
Looks like some new loft space is opening up....
-
Yeah consumer affairs has inspectors that go around looking for things to write up - usually when a toy gun has a brightly colored piece on it, they deem it kosher to sell.

EDIT: I shoulda used 'Stocking' in the title instead of 'Carrying' - makes it sound like he was in the streets pointing it at people - Mods feel free to fix title -
Damn, that'd be a pretty awesome position to have and go around and strong arm people and accept bribes like they show in the movies.

Between this stuff and the Letter grade system restaurants have to post in their windows after inspections, NYC has brought the old neighborhood extortion racket into the 21st Century.

Land of the free baby.
-
There is a problem when we have crazy zero tolerance laws in place that punish individuals and businesses for asinine reasons.
-
Why can't he obv pay a $30k fine?
-
See ya!
-
Thankfully he didn't change the color of the tip and hijack an El Al flight. I'd rather read this story, could have been much worse
-
Was going to be my question if they had failed a previous inspection where those guns were deemed unacceptable. It may be dumb that it's a toy store selling fake "toy" guns. But the business get's what they deserve when they disregard the laws that are put in place. And tbh this law doesn't seem like a terrible thing.
-
where's dyzalot when we need him?
-
looks like he should have settled for the the reduced 5400 fine, instead of taking it all the way.
BTW there is nothing wrong with law. I remember when it came out it it was roundly supported by consumers in the wake of children being shot. -
...which is why that started making toy guns with giant orange tips tho
-
Why don't they just make the whole gun orange? Won't be realistic enough? Hmm..
-
We should also ban black paint lest someone get an idea.
-
next thing you know they will be trying to outlaw guns that look like toys and then only the criminals will have guns that look like toys.
-
I know if I was a cop and saw an adult with a gun that looked like a toy I wouldnt be the least bit worried or even look into it. Adults are always running around with toy guns and stuff so its not a big deal.
-
I avoid pointing toy guns at police. seems to do the trick
-
Now we are getting somewhere. Cops should always just look the other way in these situations. Like if someone is getting held up, the cops should just drive by and let the free market handle it.
-
<3 this thread.
-
a transaction at gunpoint is not an example of a free market but can be a good example of the market we have
just sayin -
That’s right I forgot. Because there has never been a good example of the free market except for the internet and the US economy pre 1918 and there is no evidence that a free market would ever be corrupted by those seeking to retain power and Fortune except for the internet and the US Economy post 1918.
