ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell after three unproductive and highly paid seasons.
Senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press the move was made Thursday and that "we wish him well."
The decision comes less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback.
Russell will now likely be considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders, while producing only seven wins as a starter.
He lost his starting job midway through last season. His career has been hampered by a rookie holdout, poor work habits, being overweight and the lack of productive players around him.

5.5 mil per win, shit aint cheap
of that 39, he prob has like 5 right now and will be broke in a couple years working at BK for free food -
I'm so bummed the Raiders cut JaMarcus, he was perfect for them.
Go Chargers. -
Yes!! It's about time.
-
I really hope someone will pick him up and try to transform him. I will really miss the Jamarcus Russell threads.
-
he can still throw a football 60 yds on his knees though! Maybe..

A brother just can't get a break in this country.
-
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
-
Transform him into a better QB or new position? He doesn't even look like a NFL QB when you watch him and I can't imagine him as anything else given his weight/speed.
-
Now if Al Davis would just die we would really be getting somewhere!
-
Dude was hustlin the NFL he is really a rapper! Pop bottle Jamacrus pop bottles!!
-
He prolly already got himself a spot waiting in the WWE.
-
I wonder where he will end up. It will be interesting to see how he handles this humility.
Is he willing to start at the bottom and try to work his way up to a starter again?
Doubtful
It's mind-bottling how he just let himself go. Is there any QB in NFL history that got as out of shape as he has? Or any "skilled" position really.
I bet Ryan Leaf has been fist pumping all day. He is no longer the biggest bust in NFL history. -
hearing rumors of a wildcat hybrid using a tight end in motion, will need rudimentary passing skills, Jamarcus will be perfect, possibly called the ocelot

Update: The other shoe has dropped: the Oakland Raiders have finally cut ties with under-achieving QB JaMarcus Russell, per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Now that that's over with, let's figure out what happens next for the former LSU Tiger.
Given Russell's struggles at the professional level, it's hard to get a read on what team would be the best fit at this point, but Cleveland Browns fan blog DawgsByNature.com had a recent post clamoring for the team to sign Russell. Could Mike Holmgren be the guy to help Russell turn his career around? Earlier suggestions we've heard have been the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins, although ESPN's Chris Mortensen slams the brakes on the suggestion of the Eagles.
A couple weeks ago, Schefter came through with a very interesting idea on a new possibility if Russell were to be released (Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints). At this point, we're also contractually obligated to mention the QB-needy Buffalo Bills, and Russell wouldn't be that far behind the incumbents in learning Chan Gailey's offense, given the fact that the new scheme is being installed this offseason. Then again, another mediocre QB is probably the last thing the Bills need, according to Sal Maiorana of the Democrat and Chronicle.
There's been a wealth of chatter on Russell's next destination, but we haven't been able to confirm anything with our reporters at this time, so it's just speculation. Stay tuned -

He should buy some taco bells while he still can but he would eat all the profits.
I had a roommate years ago who had a huge house and the whole life but got divorced and lost his company and everyhing but he had a large framed collage of photos from the life he lived and would stare at it for long periods, wife and kids included. Very sad the denial like he was on a road trip or something. That Jamarcus in a few years. -
anyone know how much he is still owed by the raiders
edit They still owe him $3 million more but saved $6.45 million by not having him on the roster in 2010. -
looooooooooooooooooooooool that's allsome
-
I refuse to believe that this is the last Jaru thread we will ever have in OT.
-
that's too bad. I wish the raiders nothing but bad things
