  1. I just got a nice little letter from my City Police Department saying that I owe $125 for a "red zone infraction." The letter also has 3 high resolution pics of me taking a right turn at a red light.

I thought this was bullshit and that I was innocent until I used the code on the letter to log in to a website and see a video clip. I totally smoked the red light.

I am guilty of the violation, but I feel so violated.

Has anyone ever gotten one of these? Did you beat it?
  2. they have em all over in arizona. a lot of people just say they never got the letter since it isn't certified mail and technically could have been lost. i wouldn't do that but apparently it works (says my buddies)
  3. Ugh. gg.

Yeah in Germany we use to get those when ever you screwed the pooch on the roads there.
  4. I remember when I lived in Germany was the first time I heard of the cameras and the ones for speeding.
  5. This blows..... they just put these things up. Old habits die hard.

Chances are, I have already racked up several of these things without even knowing it.

Im thinking about taking my chances in court.

  6. did you initially reply: "Video or didn't happen"?
  7. I believe in Michigan, or at least the part I used to live, a cop still had to witness the event for them to be able to ticket you. The cameras were only there for verification purposes.

  9. If you robbed a bank and got caught on camera would you feel violated?

Nope. On the letter (right next to where it says they accept all major credit cards) it gives you a website where you can view the video.

  11. They have speed cameras in Maryland and both speed cameras and red light cameras in DC.
Haven't heard of a way around them as they are issued to the car's owner and not to an individual...although, I believe, they are fighting it in the Maryland State Legislature b/c of the fees the contractor is getting from them(not b/c of the way they are utilized).

More info here about MD/DC/Virginia...not sure if applicable

    I wouldn't rob a bank.

Apparently, not coming to a complete stop when making a right turn at a red light is a crime I do commit.

  13. Red light and speeding cameras are ridiculous and should be outlawed everywhere. A car cannot commit a crime. What happened to the burden of proof being on the state?

Privately owned camera on private property. Entirely different situation.
  15. lucky, here is CA its like $350 for a red light. I have never got one but they have the cameras everywhere.

FYI here in Texas it is Civil not criminal

*edut didn't see it was you...of course you knew that
  17. This scares me.
  18. A plane hits a helicopter over the Hudson River and impact is recorded by no fewer than 3 cameras. A famous TV Sports Reporter undressing in the privacy of her hotel room finds herself naked on the web the next day. Cameras are everywhere in public, at every red light, recording speeding violations, and whatever else (especially when they generate revenue) will be commonplace in the years to come unless the people insist on them being banned or at minimum the images use restricted.

Stepping out in public will have it's consequences.
  19. doesnt video surveillance have to be public knowledge? aka theres a sign somewhere that your being videotaped or next to the camera.

i think they have signs for those in NYC, but my town is nice and quiet so there arent any cameras yet
  20. We just got these in my tiny little town and I immediately got my ticket. That video shocked the shit out of me. I thought about fighting on the grounds that it wasn't me. I'm sure it wasn't because they also clocked me at 30 MPH; the speed limit is 40 and I always speed. So it must have been the wife. But, like the idiot I am, I let too much time pass.

Side note. They tried these here back in the 80's or early 90's. They eventually stopped using them because it was argued that they were violating the right to privacy under the constitution. But, back then they were also getting a pic of the drivers face. The car was in public, but the driver was in a private space (his car) behind glass.
  21. We had them all over Charlotte, NC until people started complaining that 80% of the revenue generated went to Lockheed Martin, the developer of the camera (surprise..) and 19% went to the police department and something like 1/10th of the first percent went to city schools and education. I'm not sure if the legality got them removed but I'd have to believe so. That would be like me creating "Matt's Speed trap" and sending speeders a $100 ticket in the mail and keeping 80 and giving 20 to the city. An individual can't do that, so why should a corporation be able to?
  22. don't you have a right to cross-examine your accuser? how do you cross examine a sony?
  23. here you go

  24. I'm lucky. The few cameras they have around here are in areas I don't usually frequent. I guess we will eventually just have to drive like robots and never make mistakes. The finality and absolution of these cameras can be extremely intrusive and unforgiving.
  25. they stopped giving points on your driving record for these type of tkts because they couldn't prove who was driving but they determined the owner of the vehicle could be cited for the fine in florida virginia and maine. it is strictly a revenue source for the town or county. it has nothing to do with public safety. altamonte springs florida had these for a while, but when everyone started to stop at the red lights because of the cameras they took them down. the city council argued that the cameras were not generating the money they anticipated.
