  1. I found some software called handbrake but found that the quality of the picture and sound was poor.

So does anyone have any software that can rip a DVD so it is viewable on an iPod?
  2. I googled and found this FAQ:

How do i get video onto my ipod?
A: You have to encode it to baseline 1.3 h264 video at 320x240 and no higher than 30fps. You can also use mpeg4, but i don't recommend it. It looks shocking compared to h264 at the same bit rates.

How do i convert video on a PC? (now with free h264)
A: As with the Mac, anything that quicktime pro can open can be converted to h264 video. Other than that, you can use a little program called Videora iPod Converter to easily and quickly create ipod compatible h264 and MPEG4. I recommend using the 768 h264 profile, or make your own at around 512kbps, 2 pass, 128kbps audio.

how can i convert my movie so it is in a letterbox on a PC?
Quicktime should automatically resize videos correctly. If quicktime doesn't open you video, use videora, make a copy of the profile you like to use, then edit it and change the resolution to 320x176 (closest to 16:9) and save it.

How do i convert video on a MAC?
A: Quicktime Pro will convert any video it can open to h264 compatible video for the ipod. You can get divx, xvid and ac3 codecs if your videos wont play. Any video quicktime will open, you can convert to ipod h264.

There is an awesome application called Handbrake that will convert directly from a DVD. Originally, the videos created by this didn't work on the ipod, but there is a newly compiled version specifically for the ipod with queue support (perfect for encoding dvds with multiple programs - like tv show dvds, or music dvds). You can get this from here

It's highly optimised for G5's, and i get around 40fps encoding speed on my dual 1.8

How do i get my encoded videos onto my ipod?
A: Best way to do this is to drag your videos into your iTunes library. This way you can name them and they'll be safe in your library and easy to find. You can easily drag them onto your ipod from there. If iTunes complains that your ipod won't play the file, you haven't encoded it properly. When your videos are in iTunes they should look like this

That's all i've got for now. If anyone has anything they'd like to add, post it up and ill put it in.

    Edit:

Here is a guide to DVD to ipod: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/guide/dvd-to-ipod/
