so i asked this question in the other thread and didnt get a reply so yah. once the question is answered feel free to delete thread mods...
(this question is not a attempt at talking shit, just curious)
ok so after looking at how stacked Canada's team is and assuming that ever since it started fielding a national team it has always been this way why do they only have 1 gold medal??? Did they just choke in games? Did they not have as many superstars on the team? Are the Europian teams normally better?
and this is in regards to whoever said that Canada only started sending a national team since the 60's or so. -
stick to lurking brah
-
they have 7 olympic gold medals. google is your friend.
-
because they were canadians
-
in the last 60 years, they have 1... sick run in the 10s and 20s though...
-
To answer you question, yes Canadian hockey fans are just as annoying as Iowa and SEC football fans.
-
seriously is everyone dense today on this site? they have 1 gold medal in the lASt 60 years that is what my question is refering to. Jesus tread is right this is worse then the Iowa homers.
-
in most of those 60 years the players were amateurs - not pros the best players did not play in the Olympics until recently

thanks tieful

There have been 4 Olympic Winter Games with NHL players playing:
1998, 2002, 2006, 2010.
Canada has won 2/4 Gold Medals.
In 1998 Canada lost in the shootout to the Czech's as Wayne Gretzky (assuming we all know about Wayne) sat on the bench and didn't shoot.
In 2006 it was a disaster, finished 7th...wasn't a well picked team; really old defensive core got exposed on big ice in Italy, guys like Crosby and Getzalf didn't make the team instead they had Bertuzzi and Draper. Also Niedermayer and Jovonovski were both hurt, two of our top 4 dmen at the time which didn't help.
So to answer your question...50% of the Gold medals since NHL players have played isn't too bad. -
Up until 1998, NHL players were not allowed in the Olympics. Furthermore, before the 90's players from communist countries and Europe were not typically in the NHL and did not have a high quality league of their own to play in.
So.....while Canada had to make up their Olympic team from all the players that were not good enough to be in the NHL (consider that hundreds of the best Canadians were in the NHL already), these other countries sent their national teams to the Olympics - teams that had been playing together for years comprised of their elite players. Hardly a level playing field.
Now that all countries can send their best to the Olympics......well, you see what happens. -
Olympic hockey was rigged up until 1998 imo...COMMIE BASTARDS ruined many celebrations!
-
This is why the 1980 win for the US was so massive...
Think if the NCAA put together a team and beat a lineup of Lebron, Kobe, DWade, Dwight and Paul.
The USSR was a machine in hockey just beating on amateur teams during the Olympics and even beating on NHL teams during that time as well. -
Also the structure of the tournament makes for high variance. A strong playoff team might win the Stanley Cup with a record of 16-2 or so - point being that they lose a few games. In Olympic hockey, if you lose a single game late in the tournament, you're done.
-
Exactly...
Canada/USA finished 1-2 in 2010, they finished 7-8 in 2006.
