A couple of days ago I started hearing whining noises when I turned wheel on my car, and then it start to get harder to turn the wheel. I checked the level of power steering fluid, and it was way below "min", so I bough some and filled it up. Then after driving a while I had the same problems as before, and when I checked, the level had dropped again.
I am going to fix this, but it's so fucking cold outside atm, so I was thinking about waiting until the summer to do so. Is there any way to disconnect the power steering? I tried to look for a fuse that I could pull but I can't find any. The car is a 98 Ford Mondeo 2.0. It sucks to have to fill up the oil every time I drive the car.
Please help -
do you really want to drive it without power steering?
-
sounds like he already is about 5 minutes after he refills the fluid and starts the car.
heated garage? sucks so fucking bad to work on a car in the cold. find the leak, replace the hose or pump, get back inside the warm igloo.
ford mondeo? obv making this up. -
get the power steering fluid with sealer in it to swell up the seals bro. it's possible this will fix it for a longer period of time. other than that you will have to replace the pump. if that fails rub some icy hot on it.

Thanks guys. I was hoping it was possible to just diable the whoe thing, but I guess not. I'll have to try to fix it this weekend.

isnt your pump belt driven?
remove the belt, disabling the power steering pump. i only suggest doing this if it has its own belt tho (which it prolly doesnt since new cars only have one serp belt)
i have my power steering pump removed on my 66 chrysler right now. its fun to turn a car thats 19 feet long without power steering -
If the fluid drains in a day, the sealer fluid will not work cuz the leak is too large.
If you can reach the leaky hose, clean it then duct tape it til u can get a new hose. -
Put the scha arcade in the motheFUCKING carrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

lol, pretty sure what he is doing now works as well as duct tape would.Originally Posted by HazeMan

even if duct tape would stick in sub-zero (Fahrenheit obv) temperatures...
and I doubt it would take less time to duct tape it than to actually fix the thing, just a hydraulic hose (or the pump), remove, replace. -
Yeah, it drains pretty quick. I was just outside and tried to have a look, but I couldnt see where the leak was comming from. The pump is on the drive belt, so I cant just disconnect it :(
I was unabled to find the leak just from looking at it from the top of the engine. I didnt have a flashlight either. There was a small puddle under the car tho... FML -
i had a nasty leak in my power steering when i first bought my car. was 1.5 hours out of town when it happened, and had to pull over on the high way and put fluid in there before every turn on the way home. it sucked.

+1 on girl arms

u have to get under the car, trace the leak, then either replace line or seal it with a epoxy like substance
-
try tightening the hoses at the pump and the place the hose go to, you might be lucky that somehow a hose became loose (maybe from the cold, extreme temps will do weird shit to metal). doubt it helps but worth a try since it is kinda easy and if one was loose you'll know the instant you put a wrench on it so you won't have to waste another load of fluid.
btw, you can use automatic transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid, it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper in the US anyway. so much cheaper you might be able to just blow this off until spring, lol. get the right kind though, can't help ya there but think it probably doesn't matter, the pink stuff, lol. -
maybe Norway has this things called MECHANICS

If you are filling it up that often and there is'nt a lake under it , it is probably a leak in the pressure line. Only leaking when the steering wheel is turned. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you look under the hood. Probably be spraying out from that line. It should be pretty obvious where the leak is.
