Which cardio exercise is better for you in terms of burning calories and losing weight?
A: Jogging 2 miles on the treadmill in about 18-20 minutes.
B: Doing intervals on the treadmill, in a 5-4-3-2-1 succession. This means walking 5 minutes at a brisk pace, then jogging for 5 minutes, then walking for 4, jogging for 4, etc. Total workout = 30 minutes.
I have done both. Option A makes me more tired, but Option B keeps me on the treadmill for about 10 minutes longer, thus keeping my heart rate elevated for 10 more minutes. -
Hmmmmmmmmmmm yup I have nothing to add.
-
how many miles is option 2 totaling?
-
HIIT, high intensity interval training. option b. except sprints not jogging.
-
breast reduction surgery > all of the above. good luck!
-
your body burns the same amount of calories whether you walk two miles or run two miles. The obv difference is that you're going to complete running two miles first so you're going to continue burning calories for the next 10-18 minutes. I'd say with the extra half mile walking is probably burning slightly more calories.
But the correct answer is to use a combination of both workouts and extending the mileage on option A and decrasing the waling time of option 2. For example run 5, walk 4, run 4, walk 3, run 4 walk 3, run 3, walk 2, run 2 walk 1, run 1, walk 1 -
i assumed most of you can make adjustments on your own, obv you dont sprint for 5 minutes.
-
Speeding your heart rate and then letting it settle back down and then raising it has worked the best for me... I run 1/4 mile, "speed walk" (or w/e u want to call it) a 1/2 mile and then run the last 1/4 mile every day.
But I workout while I do this. 1/4 mile to get heart rate up, then do sets of w/e... in between sets (after like 3) I'll do the 1/2 mile, finish my sets (3 more) and end the workout with 1/4 mile run... I read this was a good way to incorporate cardio into your workout routine. (BC I HATE RUNNING) -
I been eating much healthier and walking about 1 hr-1:30 everyday. As well as some ab exercises and push ups everyday. How long will it take until I lose 20lbs?
-
Walking> running unless your cardio is good and your keeping low heart rate.20 mins isnt enough either 40 mins is min. If you jog and your heartrate is higher than your target range you will burn sugar cals from what you ate that day.
If you maintain a good heart rate walking you will burn fat calories more all and all its still burning cals either way but if your not in good cardio condition walking deff better for weight loss its proven. -
Doing a little of both, there are so many other things you can do other than run though. If you just do that you will get burnt out fast.
-
Warm up with a jog for a few minutes then go into interval training.
On a scale of 1-10 run at about an 8 or 9 for thirty seconds, then bring it down to a 4 or 5 in effort. repeat this 10-15 times with a cool down after. -
10 weeks if you are doing it right.

Remember, it is not just eating healthier, it is eating a deficit over what you are burning.
You'd be best to do abs/pushups every other day and give your muscles time to recover and rebuild. -
i'm a fitness n00b...what do u mean by deficit over what i burn? and doing what "right"?

eating? -
search couch to 10k running program.

Interval training will kick your ass, I just started doing it... what I like to do is crank the treadmill up to a 9.5 and run for about 30 seconds then bring it down to 5.5 for 45 seconds... after a while ill goto 45 at 9.5 and 45 at 5.5 then if i start to get real gassed ill go down to 6.5 for a bit then kick it back up to 9.5 for a min or so then back to 5.5 and finish up with 9.5 for as long as I can go.

go here http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm and find your number. Subtract 500 for a deficit
500x7=3500 deficit for the week=1 lb fat loss.
Go to calorie tracking website like myfitnesspal, dailyplate, etc and track your food
ez game -
b.)
BTW, it is false that walking 1 mile = running 1 mile. Running a mile burns more calories.
In "Energy Expenditure of Walking and Running," published last December in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, a group of Syracuse University researchers measured the actual calorie burn of 12 men and 12 women while running and walking 1,600 meters (roughly a mile) on a treadmill. Result: The men burned an average of 124 calories while running, and just 88 while walking; the women burned 105 and 74. (The men burned more than the women because they weighed more.) -
Intervals hands down.
Let me add something though, running outside or on an indoor track is much better than on a treadmill, it requires different muscle's in your lower body to actually propel yourself forward. That is why people can run for 5 miles on a treadmill and then run 2 miles outside and struggle. -
I agree with most of this. Except you can do abs every day if you do plank exercises. Also, I'd up the intensity if I were you...

You can definitely lose a lot faster than that but not sure how "healthy" it is. I lost 75 pounds in 6 months by doing 1 hour of weight training 4 times a week and cardio 6-7 times a week for an hour or more. I did the fad diet route and completely cut carbohydrates for the first 4 months but now eat brown rice and whole grains along with more fruit.
Some people say losing that amount of weight that quickly isn't healthy but its alot healthier than staying fat. Besides, I feel great and just did a full checkup at the doctors and all of my numbers were perfect. So, not sure where the unhealthy argument even comes from. Helped my poker too. -
Made apost, but internet timed out... Summary is that HIIT training is intervals of jogging/walking and sprinting/running hard. This confuses your body, and it doesnt know how much energy it needs to produce to sustain ur workout. So it raises your metabolic rate so that if you decide to sprint again it will be working hard enough to give you enough energy.
You have 2 examples (completely fictional numbers as they vary by weight and distance):
1 you run/jog 30 minutes and burn 500 calories, and you burn 1500 calories in your regualr daily activities.
2. HIIT for 30 minutes you will burn greater than 500 calories for the workout, and you will continue to burn throughout the day at a higher rate, meaning that you will burn greater than 1500 calories doing the same exact daily activities.
Cliff notes: HIIT will increase your metabolic rate(rate at which u burn calories) - therefore you burn more calories during and after workouts
