I didn't see tonight's game but I was surprised last night to see my Phillies having a full on champagne celebration in the locker following their sweep of the Reds. Why? There were even official banners that read "NLDS Champs" or something similar.
What the hell are they or possibly the Giants and/or Yankees celebrating? They won a series. They didn't become the Champions of anything unless they are co-champions of the NLDS or co-co-co-champions of the Division Round.
I don't know I love my Phillies and hope they weren't the only ones doing it cause it seems kinda silly. I mean champagne celebrations after clinching the division, winning your first round playoff series, the league championship, the World Series. It's stupid. You don't see football teams going apeshit after winning a Wild Card game.
Division, Pennant, World Series. That's it. Amirite? -
I was significantly less exuberant in my celebration tonight than I was when we won the division.

ya, seems unnecessary but its probably here to stay for the most part. On a similar note, I always thought it was strange for a baseball team to hang a banner for getting the wild card (dont see it in football) next to the world series or nlcs champs banners. Iirc a team a few years ago actually hung a banner that said "wild card champions", like getting the wild card is being the champion of anything.

I'm with ya there... Winning the NL West sure sounds better than we won the wildcard.
-
I reckon they get extra money everytime they win a series so maybe they are celebrating that?
-
I agree with OP - yeah go ahead and celebrate(your advancing) but it's not a fucking championship.
Then again I'm still opposed to the wildcard bullshit (i'm old school) -
baseball gets alot less teams into the playoffs then any other sport. Just making it is huge. Winning a series is even bigger. I mean half the hockey teams make it. 12 from NFL make it. Half the NBA teams make it.
