Movies from the 90's I would consider in-arguably better than Pulp Fiction (in no particular order):
Edited By: qjuice14 Jan 13th, 2012 at 12:09 AM
1.) The Shawshank Redemption
2.) American Beauty
3.) Fargo
4.) Unforgiven
5.) Schindler's List
6.) The English Patient
7.) The Pianst
8.) The Usual Suspects
9.) Breaking The Waves
10.) Trois Couleurs: Bleu
11.) Trois Couleurs: Rouge
12.) The Silence of the Lambs
13.) Saving Private Ryan
14.) The Thin Red Line
15.) The Green Mile
16.) Life is Beautiful
17.) In The Name of the Father
18. Goodfellas
19.) Braveheart
20.) Fight Club
this next group is the range that I think Pulp Fiction belongs some where in:
The Matrix, Se7en, American History X, Reservoir Dogs, Philadelphia, Before Sunrise, Forrest Gump, Leon, L.A. Confidential, Heat, Abre los ojos, The Sixth Sense, Election, Rushmore, The Big Lebowski, twelve monkeys, good will hunting, groundhog day, magnolia, boogie nights...etc...
perhaps 30-50 was slightly off, but it definitely falls somewhere between 20-40 and i admittedly didn't watch near enough foreign films from 90s. saying that pulp fiction belongs somewhere in that group above is by no measure a slight on pulp fiction. The 90's was a great decade for movies and being listed in that company is pretty special.
and lol voorh33s I wasn't saying that i think pulp fiction had a weak script. My comment about concessions in the story was not directed at pulp fiction, i was responding to waco saying that i don't like tarantino and it was a general criticism of Tarantino's movies which you seem to agree with.
continue with the hate. . . . . . -
Pulp Fiction

Edit: Pulp Fiction is soooooo much more important of a film than Shawshank. Shawshank is a great movie, but that's all it is. Pulp Fiction augmented the art of film, and showed a new way. It was a game changer. Shawshank wasn't. -
Edited By: strangelove99 Jan 13th, 2012 at 12:59 AMThe second group of movies is better than the first, and anyone who thinks The Green Mile and The English Patient are better than Pulp Fiction has highly questionable tastes.Originally Posted by qjuice14

1.) The Shawshank Redemption - obv
2.) American Beauty - no
3.) Fargo - no, close but still a level below
4.) Unforgiven -
5.) Schindler's List
6.) The English Patient - seriously??
7.) The Pianst - seriously?!
8.) The Usual Suspects- you gotta be fucking fist thrusting me, rewatch this movie now that the whole "twist" thing has been done to death a million times. It's a 7/10 movie. It didn't hold up all that well imo.
9.) Breaking The Waves
10.) Trois Couleurs: Bleu
11.) Trois Couleurs: Rouge
12.) The Silence of the Lambs
13.) Saving Private Ryan - a war movie with graphic scenes and good acting, not one of the all time greats though
14.) The Thin Red Line
15.) The Green Mile - get tom hanks' cock out of your mouth
16.) Life is Beautiful
17.) In The Name of the Father
18. Goodfellas - please explain to me how this is better than pulp in ANY way
19.) Braveheart - I might agree here, luv me some mel in war paint
20.) Fight Club - might agree here too, one of the all time greats, what movie beat it? -
Usual Suspects is one of my favorites, but there is definitely some bad acting in that movie.

couldn't you say the same thing about Pulp Fiction, how the whole showing scenes out of sequence/non chronologically has been done to death a million times?
yeah, that chick who played the sketch artist who looks like a younger Rene Russo was bad. Thankfully the main cast was all awesome. -
Edited By: snaggs Jan 13th, 2012 at 02:12 AMlol I was thinking something similar, who was bad in that cast? I mean you had Pete Postelthwaite and Giancarlo Esposito and an uncredited Peter Greene tearing it up in tiny roles for chrissakes,Originally Posted by JKoblyn

Edited By: voorh33s Jan 13th, 2012 at 03:57 PMI was thinking about this when I wrote that. Most people on this board are sentimentalist and don't like to admit that a lot of the classic "groundbreaking" movies in their favorite's list when viewed today, just aren't anywhere near as good as when they first came out. A few months back, I made a post asserting that "gamechanging", "revolutionary", etc type of movies are always overrated due to having no competition when they debut. Just because you start an idea doesn't mean that you are the best at expressing that idea.Originally Posted by JKoblyn

Anyways, to address your point, I would argue that pulp fiction is immune to this rule. Sure, there have been a billion movies since then that use the out of sequence technique, but I don't think that was what made the movie so great. It was the dialogue and characters imo. The movie still would have absolutely raped even if it was filmed chronologically. This coupled with the fact that despite the billion competitors, pulp did it better than 99% of them and had the script to keep it afloat so it stands the test of time.
You can have anyone watch pulp fiction for the first time and it doesn't matter if they've seen 50 out of sequence type of movies or zero, they will be blown away. The only reason The Usual Suspects is special is because of the KaiserSouze twist obv. Do the same test here except change the variable to "twist" movies and not everyone is gonna be shitting their pants at the ending like they were back in '95. It's hard to highlight my point here because TUS is still a pretty damn good movie. It has pretty good characters and pretty good dialogue but clearly a step below a movie like pulp in that regard..yes clearly. It's just more in the 7.5 range rather than what imdb has it as, 8.7 and the 25th best movie of all time....get the fuck out of here.
Seriously, there was a guy ITT who watched PF for the first time and it rocked his world, do you really expect anyone to watch TUS in 2012, for the very first time, and for them to come out of that saying, 'yeah that's a top 25 movie ever!'. I hope not... -

I counted, Pulp Fiction won.

LOL @ arguing Pulp Fiction isn't a top 20 movie of the 90's -
It might be a top 20 movie but I don't think it is even Tarantino's best movie of the '90's.
-
If you gave me the option to watch Pulp Fiction again right now or Jackie Brown, I'd choose Jackie Brown. I liked the story better.
-
anyone who doesnt say shawshank is lying. there is no debate here
-
there is posting your opinion strongly, and then, there is lameass...
underrated flick for sure but you are in an EXTREME minority here, I assure you. -
Its possible that I'm just burnt out on seeing Pulp Fiction from all the air time it has had. I still think it is at least debatable between the two though.
-
They show Pulp Fiction on VH1 so much now without the cussing and a few other things and it fucks it up. Theres a ton of people who havent watched it in such a long time and they're just seeing it for the first time again on VH1 or for the first time period if they've been in a coma. They see it and forget about all the cool shit they are missing or in some cases dont even know it exists. Im sure theres parts I dont remember cause im so used to the edited TV version.

lol can't fathom watching Pulp Fiction edited. Fuuuuuuuuuck that shit
