  1. Tell me what you think about this situation:

One of my fantasy teams is an 18 team money league I play in with some guys from texas. At the start of the season we had 6 teams making the playoffs, and the trade deadline was Nov 18th.

On Nov 14th the commisioner decides to change both of these things, so trades are now extended until Nov 25th (unless he decides to change it again) and there are now 8 teams in the playoffs. This is my first year playing fantasy, so I'm never exactly sure of where I stand ruleswise, but to me this doesn't seem right. Whatever the rules are at the start of the season you keep those rules the same way though. Here are the facts relevant to the situation.

    - I am 9-3 and 2/18, and will finish either 1st or 2nd in the regular season
    - When I discovered the change was made I was 8-3, not guaranteed to make the playoffs but still complained instantly
    - Our commissioner was at 6/5 when the change was made, which put him in a 5 way tie for 6th place.
    - I made a decision on Nov 13th based on our trade deadline being Nov 18th. If I had've known the trade deadline would be extended, I would've made a different decision and my team would now be stronger.
    - Commish claims he was too busy to change it earlier cause of work.
    - Commish has 73 moves on his team, the most in our league, and is the most active in terms of trades and forum use etc. (meaning he is always on the site and can easily click a few buttons to change settings)
    - There have been threads made in the league forum complaining about the league rules and settings several times, and the issues of trade deadline and only 6 teams in the playoffs have never been raised by anyone.
    - It is a money league, and it has still been left as 6 teams get paid
    - Commish claims that it is 'natural' to change league settings like this on the fly, and that it keeps the league competitive and interesting.
    - These guys all went to Baylor together and have done this league for years. This is my first year in the league and I only know a few of the guys in it, but the commish is the guy I know the best and the guy who invited me in.

I feel like changing any league settings (unless their is universal consent) during the season in a money league is way out of line and unheard of, but as it is my first year playing fantasy and my first year in this league with guys that have been doing it for years I am obv the outsider and never 100% sure of where I stand with fantasy rules etc, but I am super pissed about this.

So is the commish out of line doing what he did, or am I over re-acting? Obv the trade deadline thing screwed me, and not much can be done about that now, but what should we be doing regarding the number of playoffs teams going forward?

  2. no
  3. nope, cant change it. I've commished a league for my friends at home for a few years now and won't even change a rule after the first player has paid for the season. When people put in their money they're doing so on the assumption that the rules are what they are.

  4. seems out of line. These are major changes he's making, seems a little shady.
  5. Not cool. Dick move.
  6. tsk tsk
  7. i mean as long as these new settings were what he really meant to do and the first ones were a mistake, in that case its fine.
  8. No, unacceptable, if you want to make changes like this you make them b4 next season, not midseason. The fact that this benefits the commish makes it even worse

  9. Def not ok.
  10. he should have ran it by the rest of the league before doing anything. I ran a 10 team league on espn where i just left it on default setting and 5 teams were making the playoffs. Midway through the season people started to ask me how many teams made the playoffs and I said I think it's set on 5, but I can make it whatever everyone wanted. We voted and the majority of the league said they like 6 better. I still should have just handled it before the season, but I think it was handled the best it could have been at the time.

This guy you speak of seems shady though.

  11. That's horseshit, no way can he pull that.
  12. i'd have much less of a problem with the trade deadline change than the max playoff teams, but still fuck that.
  13. Someone's trying to collude

I would ask for my money back
  14. Tell Waco he can't win everything and snap him off
  15. only if the players unanimously agree.
  16. he's not a shady guy, i honestly believe he's just trying to make the league fairer. He claims that 33% of the teams making the playoffs is ridiculously low and no leagues have that low a percentage, that 40% is much more normal and fair.

my argument is that it doesn't matter, those were the rules we have used all year and without any discussion you can just up and change it!!

I'm also getting very little support from anyone else in the league in the forums because 1) most people don't comment in the forum very much and 2) apart from our top 2 teams and the bottome 3/4 the rest of everybody else is in playoff hunt (it's a very even league) so probably wanted the extra playoff spots to give themself a chance.

    still seems wrong though?

  17. anything is kinda BS. Trade deadline id be pretty meh about, but playoff teams is pretty rigged. if its like a 20 dollar league i prob wouldnt care much. if its 100+ id prob ask for a change back

Im running 3 OT leagues and I meant to have 6 teams make the playoffs but realized after week 2 or 3 it was only 4, never even brought it up, its staying at 4 cuz thats what it was when it started

  18. Welcome to the wonderful world of fantasy sports. Power tripping commissioners, shady collusion, spite moves, and the cause for life long friendships to end.

Save yourself the aggravation before you get in to it and play roto leagues run by 3rd party sites with fixed rules against complete strangers. Trust me.
  19. yeah i am pissed about trade deadline tho cause it actually ripped me offr. it's a long story, but basically i was holding vince young in an 18 team 2 QB league and dropped him because even if vick got hurt i couldn't trade him, so he didn't have as much value to me. We also only have 4 bench spots and were heading into week 11 which was a bye week and i needed the spot.

Then the day after i drop him the commish changes our league settings to extend the trade-deadline AND the news comes out Vick is hurt.

I got the good Steve Smith for Palmer the same week they signed him, so having Young to trade would've been worth a lot.

but yeah, trade deadline is gone and not much can be done about that now, but I'm certain I'm right about playoffs but not sure what options I have to do anything about it.

fwiw the league entry was $40, altho with 18 teams there's a few hundre on the lines during playoffs. I don't really care about that, I care that I've put so much time and effort into this thing and now we are changing rules on the fly.

I also care cause I have Petersen and if he's out or playing sub par next week I am obv losing my first playoff game a reasonable percentage of the time, which finishes me out of the money, instead of the old system which would guarantee me a top 4 finish with a first round playoff bye.

fantasy is frustrating enough without this shit, lol

  20. What's your team look like? I'm curious what a good 18 team league team looks like never been in one that deep

  21. I agree with MUPP. Only if players unanimously agree... Otherwise Commish is pulling a bullshit move.

    QB - Romo
    RB - Petersen
    WR - Steve Smith
    TE - Gronkowski
    Flex - CJ2K
Flex - Damien Williams / Dustin Keller
Flex - Mike Williams (TB) / Dustin Keller
    QB Flex - Hasselbeck
    Kicker - Suisham
Def - Titans (which is good cause in our playoffs titans schedule goes Indy, Jac, Houston)

Bench - Keller, Doug Baldwin, Isaac Redman and some other handcuff that I can't remember.

Oh, and I drafted Kenny Britt too :(

edit : actually might as well call me the tennesse titans, cause as well as hasselbeck, cj2k and williams my other bench player is ringer, to handcuff cj2k

  24. 100% not ok. totally shady move by the commish. since you look to be itm you can't really ask for your money back, but don't play with this clown again.
  25. how do 18 teams start 2 QBs when there are 32 teams in the nfl? does NOT compute...thats not even counting bye weeks when u need a QB replacement

cause it's a QB flex spot.

    we have one WR/RB flex, 2 WR/RB/TE flex's and 1 QB/WR/TE/RB.

with such a deep league and shallow benches we have lots of flexes to make all that stuff work. So you only need 1 each of QB, WR, RB and TE to start each week, then just fill up the 4 flex spots with whatever you have.

Like 16 of our top 30 scorers in the league are QB's tho, and they are the most consistent scorers, so basically if you have 2 decent QB's and an ok running back or 2 then your team will always do well. the guy in first has something ridiculous like brees, rodgers and ray rice, but then total rubbish everywhere else, so i make up ground on him with gronkowski, cj2k, steve smith etc

Right, you have to get EVERYONE to agree. For example, one of the players wanted to make our league a PPR league this time around. I don't think anyone would have a problem with this, but since everyone had paid I wanted to get an OK from every manager before the draft started. I wasn't able to get in touch with everyone, so we didn't do it. It'll be part of the rules next season, but its not OK to make any changes without consulting everyone.
