    Cliffs to the article:
    • Hundreds of reports of suicides, psychotic reactions and other serious problems tied to Chantix were left out of a crucial government safety review because Pfizer Inc., the drug’s manufacturer, submitted years of data through “improper channels.”
    • The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) does a new analysis of the drug, and finds these issues.
    • “We’ve had a major breakdown in safety surveillance,” said Thomas J. Moore, ISMP senior scientist.
    • FDA safety analysts were not made aware of more than half of the reported suicide cases.
    I don't want to alarm anyone that's on this medication, or that knows someone taking it. I just want to make you aware that Pfizer knew about these issues, and failed to present them to the FDA in a timely manner. Even though Chantix already had a black box warning for suicidal ideation, that was before this news even came out.

    I have a strong feeling that the FDA will reassess this information, and potentially take this drug off the market. If you are taking the med currently, I would talk to your doctor about alternatives in order to avoid any potential dangers.

    This is the exact reason I never fucked with Chantix. FWIW I am a firm believer that cold turkey is the only way to go, ever if you are a 10 yr+ smoker

    While quitting cold turkey is a great idea in theory, most people require additional assistance. Currently, nicotine replacement therapy, Chantix, and buproprion are the only viable options, and unfortunately it looks like one of them is on its way out.

    It's a shame that smoking cessation isn't one of the key areas of drug development, as smoking is one of the top risk factors for a myriad of diseases.

    There's no money in cures, all the money is in treatment.

    And I disagree that most people require assistance. I think most people want assistance because its not an easy thing to do. The process is going to be an uncomfortable one, and nicotine replacement simply prolongs your suffering. IMO the best and most permanent way to beat it is to face it head on with a well formulated cold turkey plan. That way you are over the physical addiction in the quickest time frame possible, and from there its just a psychological battle.

    Its becomes a legit physical addiction. I agree if someone has smoked a few cigs a day for like a year yeah---but smoke a pack a day for 10 years or more and I dont care how much will power you have, its not a simple process.

    8 months this weekend. Cold Turkey and I was a 15+ year smoker.

    yeah, my doc gave me a scrip for that to help stop smoking. After talking to a few friends who have tried it, i tossed the scrip. Too many horror stories of depression and shit.

    Yeah hubby's currently taking it - not a suicide risk kinda guy, but it def makes him edgier - though I think that's from his lack of sleep - he's always had crazy dreams, the Chantix just makes them really intense - they wake him up - he's been sleeping poorly for the past week - def affects his mood

    I, on the other hand, will be going cold turkey, cuz I'm def one of the people that would take a dive off a bridge if I took that shit

    Tx for the warning - it's some scary shit - he did better on wellbutrin when he quit before - dunno why he switched this time
