  1. My favorite part is the fact he's like 6'5 and still one of the elite PF's to ever play the game.

Not trolling, just a bitter Suns fan. The ppg is inflated due to the 42, other than that he averaged what, 23? It's pretty widely known that he was partying every night during that playoff run. He'd have been absurd in that series if he weren't out drinking 'til 2am every night. Quote all the stats you want, those stats should have been better. The Suns should have won a ring that year. Charles is the reason they had a shot, but he's also the reason they didn't get it.

I'll repost one of those Barkley quotes from the link on page 2: "If you go out with a girl and they say she has a great personality, she's ugly. If they tell you a guy works hard, he can't play a lick. Same thing.". Is there anything else you need to know about the guy?
  9. Horry wins via 7 rings and 2 oscar nominations

  10. maybe partying every nite is what it takes him to get himself prepared for the game.
  11. lol @ shoulda beat Michael Jordan's bulls. GTFO

Fwiw, I feel like this comment was just meant as a shot at announcers/media who build up scrappy (generally white) players who aren't very good at basketball (compared to other NBA players) and are always described as "working hard!" "hustling!" etc etc vs guys who are naturally gifted at basketball are rarely described as hard workers because they "make it look easy"

    seriously this.

I'd take Charles' career everyday. Horry's the shit and all, but I mean... Charles was the best player on his team when he was in his prime. Without players as great as Barkley, guys like Horry don't get to hit the big shots. I know that without Horry, those teams don't win as often as they did, but I think I can find Robert Horrys easier than I can find Charles Barkleys.
  16. Charles was listed at 6'6" but he was closer to 6'4". Some places list him as 6'4". I had lunch with him and Kenny Smith at a Hooters in Savannah back in 2002. He bought lunch for me and my soldiers. I had a soldier who was 6'5" and Charles was visibly shorter.

Anyway, he was f'n awesome to us and refused to let us pay for our own meals. He and Kenny were on their way to commentate a game in Charlotte.

One of my best memories. Such a great dude.

EDIT: Just found this on Hoopedia:

Charles Wade Barkley (born February 20, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player, Basketball Hall of Famer, and sports anaylst on NBA TV. Barkeley is one of four players in NBA history who have compiled at least 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone. But when the conversation turns to the exploits of Barkley, many people think first of the always entertaining, sometimes outrageous running commentary on basketball and life he provided throughout his celebrated 16-year NBA career.

However, as a player he was the greatest anomaly in basketball history. Listed at 6-6, but probably actually closer to 6-4, he played power forward as well as anyone, often dominating players half a foot taller.

  17. i'm not sure i'm ready to read this thread and listen to arguments for Robert Horry.
  18. I think the argument for horry would be good had Barkley not led his team to the finals only to lose to greatest ever to play the game.

Imagine being Robert Horry and making all those clutch shots, sending the crowd into a frenzy or silencing the crowd so that you could hear a pin drop, all en route to championships. Those are the moments athletes live for. Those are the moments you emulate and dream about when you're a little kid.

it's a rarity but sheep is right.
  20. I just hope everyone who is using the money argument knows that Chuck although not Broke, prob has way less money than Big Bobert. As Chuck is a huge degen gambler w/ recorded monstrous debts and Big Bob prob pinches pennies. I like the argument tho. Basically you wanna be like the kid on a driveway doing your 3...2...1.. buzzer beaters all day, or do you wanna be THE guy on a team that can never quite get there.

  21. if we are talking in terms of money then barkley is a greater success but if we are talking nba success its fucking obvious its Robert Horry go shoot your self (gsys)
  22. what about Lamar Odom vs Charles
  23. cant believe this is even a real argument. in 10 years nobody will know who robert horry is except ppl in houston and LA (and sac town). charles barkley was an absolute sicko who made heaps more of cash and to this day has marketabilty despite his well publicized gambling problems, dui/solicitation arrest, and throwing ppl through glass windows.

  24. Fuck Horry. Barkley and it isn't close. Horry is like some idiot who luckboxes the main event. Right place right time doesn't make him a better player than Wesley Person.
