How does Chauncey get in the HOF or is he already there.
Here are my 3 scenarios.
1. He is already in after this year w/o playing another game even if he does not win title, he has a few rings and this year has clearly proven how valuable he is.
2. He wins at least one more title before he retires. Whether it be this year or in a couple years.
3. He plays 3 or 4 more years w/o winning another title but puts up quality stats.
He is in obv. if he hits another title, but i think he is in even in scenario 3. Putting in a few more productive years w/ some playoff runs.
THe guy is clearly a huge difference maker. he may not wow you with stats but this year he has proven to be one of the top 10 difference makers in the league. IF not top 5.
If this has already been discussed, sorry. I have attached his stats to look at.
Move everything over 1 on these stats

7 straight trips to conference finals
Yes imo -
Not much of a discussion IMO, he is in
-
Chauncey's my boy and he's definitely a HOFer. But he has also been the difference maker (in a negative way) in the Pistons not winning more titles in that span of 6 straight. That said, I'm pulling for Chauncey and the Nuggets.
-
I'm not huge in basketball but stats have to play somewhere, and these look sub par at best. It's the Hall of fame, not dude who had a decent ppg average when his 3 was on.
-
No, not even close
15 ppg, 5.6 apg, 2.9 rpg
1 top 5 mvp voting
0 first team all NBA
0 first team all defensive -
Its pretty close, but no. Guy was pretty mehh first 6 years as a pro, no one heard of him until detroit...hes a winner, awful career #s when talking about hof. He's had a great run thats for sure (and might not be over).
-
like i said before, nuggets improve by 4 wins in a weaker west and get to play the hornets and mavs instead of playing the lakers (as they did in 2008) or the spurs (as they did in 2007).

edit: obv my homer example of a difference-maker is steve nash.
2003-04 suns (no nash): 29-53
2004-05 suns (with nash): 62-20
edit2: i'm just bitter that some of you are saying chauncey is a lock while mitch got next to no love
i'd prefer tim hardaway in the HOF tbh: http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hardati01.html
edit3: i'll soften this some. basically what i'm saying is:
1. denver was already good
2. they got better with chauncey, but not as much better as people claim.
3. i'm willing to accept that chauncey helped them "make the leap" from a good team to a championship contender. i just think denver was pretty good and kind of unlucky in their matchups.
4. most of the arguments for chauncey are based on intangibles (team cohesion etc.). -
Billups
15 ppg, 5.6 apg, 2.9 rpg, 837 games
Sam Cassell
15.7 ppg, 6 apg, 3.2 rpg, 993 games -
If we're going to base it on titles then Robert Horry and Steve Kerr are first ballot..........
-
first thing that came to mind: "lol no"
-
I was actually always a Cassell fan, always thought he was underrated, but I don't consider him hall material.
-
I doubt it. That being said, Chauncey seems more confident with the game on the line (and delivers) than any player I have ever seen. Not sure what it is, but he just never seems to be in doubt, or flustered, or nervous, or anything, and I think that rubs off on his team. He has something you see in very few players.
-
I thought the playoffs determined peoples careers. 7 straight conference finals, 1 championship, and finals mvp seals the deal for me. Also, the basketball hall of fame takes into consideration players whole careers. Chauncy carried CU into the the NCAA's and won in the 1st round against indiana(not a bad team backj then) in college.
Dude is in no doubt
edit-also is a solid ambassador for the game which carries some weight with those that vote -
If Chauncey leads this Denver team to a title, I think he belongs in the HOF. His intangibles are just off the charts.
The effect he's had on this Nuggets team is underrated. I know he had MVP chatter, but still...the impact he's had on this particular Nuggets team is nothing short of incredible.
I remember watching a Nuggets game against Golden State. The entire Golden State bench was up on their feet, totally into the game. Meanwhile, Kenyon Martin throws down a HUGE dunk. Exactly ONE player from Denver's bench jumps to his feet pumped up about it.
Fast forward to now, and look how far this Nuggets team has come. They're rebounding, defending, knowing their roles and playing total TEAM basketball. They've won 16 straight at home, and look at their bench now. They're into the games, their minds in the right place and all they care about is winning. It's a credit to Chauncey Billups.
George Karl couldn't get this team to support one another and play together cohesively; enter Chauncey, and the team turned it around. To see these guys reach their potential is great, and it would not have happened without Billups. If you listen to his interviews about his role on the team and what he brings to Denver, it gives you a great respect for him. When you listen to guys like Melo praise his presence, you realize that he's the glue that makes Denver play well as a cohesive team.
Is he HOF? Right now, I'm not sure. You can't put him in based on numbers; it would be an argument entirely on team success and his proven intangibles. If he wins a championship this year with this Nuggets team, he is a surefire lock to me. -
He still has a few years to accomplish more but as of now I would say no. When he becomes eligible for the hall voters wont remember the intangibles as much and his stats just arent there. Actually the more I think about the question its a definite no. BTW Cassel was a great player. I've never seen a guard who could play with his back to the basket like a center the way he could. He would always back down guards like a big man and then he'd shoot that little turn around jumper or he would throw a pump fake and get the defender to jump into him. He looks like an alien but he was an extremely productive offensive player throughout his career.
-
I'm a huge Billups fan, but I realllllly don't think he's a hall of famer. As much as we all all love players that are "difference makers" or "game changers" like Billups is, MOST of the hall of fame voting (in any sport) relies on stats. And Billups' just don't stack up with the greats.
-
Horry, Kerr, whatever. they were mainly role players throughout their years.
CHauncey has been the lead of his team for the last 10 years.
Unless you are a surefire hofer you have to have something stick out to make the hall of fame.
I believe this is the year, if Denver goes onto the championship the voters will remember this year. The year the Nuggets went from pretender to contender and the year the Pistons took a nosedive.
If Chauncey is not a HOfer than either is Allen Iverson.
Allen may have the stats but not the intangibles of the championships.
Maybe the better debate would be this.
Who would you rather have on your team in their prime Allen Iverson or Chauncey Billups?
I take CHauncey everyday of the week. And i bet those who say Chauncey is not a hofer may say that AI is. -
Its not really even debatable. He just doesnt have the stats. The "intangibles" people keep bringing up just dont weigh that much in terms of the hall. People keep saying if he takes Denver to a title he is definately in but for the most part the hall is about individual stats. Team accomplishments just dont play that big of a role unless the team was part of a dynasty. (90's Bulls, 80's Lakers, 60's Celtics) He is a solid player but he just isnt a HOF. Carmelo is the best player on that team anyway. Billups is the leader but if there is a future hall of famer on that team its Anthony.
-
There's not much separating Chauncey Billups from Joe Dumars. If Billups wins a title with this Nuggets team, he deserves as much credit as Melo. If you listen to what he and his teammates say about what he means to the team or watch this team before and after Billups' arrival, you'll see the evidence.
If Chauncey can get a second ring, I think he should be in. He was the leader of the great Pistons teams of the decade, and he's the biggest reason that Melo (and the rest of this Denver team) has realized its potential.
