  1. In town for the weekend, and would like some advice from the Chicago peeps on good places to go/things to do. The girl I'm staying with is at work all day, so I'm going to go solo around this town today and see what kind of debauchery I can get myself into. I'm in the River North area, but have a CTA pass so I can go pretty much anywhere within reason.

I want to see some good live music, drink some local beers (Goose Island Pale Ale is my fav so far), and find a good bar to watch the Gators/Dolphins win this weekend. I'd love to catch the Bears/Packers game at Soldier Field, but I won't be able to squeeze it in. I've been to the Bean, Navy Pier, Sears Tower, and some of the other touristy shit. While I'm not opposed to checking out a museum, I'm really looking for a chill spot with some good local flavor.

So hook a tourist up OT. I know there are a lot of Chicago OTers here, so come through for one of your brethren from out of town.

On a side note, it's 8am and I'm looking for a place to drink. Is that something I should be concerned about?
  2. For guilt free morning drinking, go to Ginger's Ale house on Ashland between Addison and Irving Park or The Globe Pub on Irving Park btw Damen and Wolcott.

Both are soccer bars full of Irish and Brits that love beer breakfast and futbol/rugby in the morning.

Brown line to Irving park or southport will get you within walking distance of these.

Ale house would be my first choice

  3. That actually sounds like a great option. Heading on the Red to the Brown now. That sounds dirty.

Edit: looks like they don't open until 11. Gonna have to wait.

  4. Sully's House is a Gator bar. Very close the the North/Clybourn Red Line stop at 1501 N. Dayton. Used to go there and they have a really good beer selection and upper room.

This place is excellent. Rooftop ftw.
  6. Fun place to get a drink and have some damn good pizza/catch a game

    http://www.pequodspizza.com/

It's maybe a mile north of you.

Cedar Hotel isn't horrible to catch a game either (Rush/Cedar), which is probably a few blocks from you in River North. Good waitresses too.
  7. If u are a fan of popcorn in any way, u got to check out Garretts Popcorn downtown on Lake Michigan Drive. I think its like 600 Lake Michigan or something. Everytime my brother comes home or i go to chicago, I gots to have it. The chicago mix of cheese and caramel corn is like CRACK!

  8. Wtf, popcorn? Really?

At Sully's now. Its super dead but they do have a good beer selection. Haven't been upstairs yet. Maybe after a few more brews. Keep the suggestions coming (aside from popcorn) and I will try to check all these places out.

  9. You won't regret getting Garret's Popcorn. Also, just west on North Ave. you'll hit a really good area at the intersections of North,Damen, and Milwaukee. Tons of bars and restaurants all around there.

  10. I was walking down michigan ave the other weekend with some visiting friends hungover as fuck (they wanted to see the marilyn monroe statue (its awesome)), anyways I caught a whiff of that popcorn from a good 30 feet away and let me tell you, it smelled delightful. That is all. And yes, it's right in the middle of the magnificent mile which is a pretty happening spot.
  11. Check out The Tilted Kilt, kinda like a celtic themed hooters.

You do know they aren't really there right? Only go there if it amuses you to see 50 year old guys hitting on young gold diggers. That area is known as the Viagra Triangle.

  15. Just take the Metra out to Palatine and I will pick you up at the Train Station. Splinters in Palatine might be the worst dive bar ever, but they are the test bar for all the new Golden Tee machines. If you want to see the biggest group of degen Golden Tee players you have ever seen, then PM me and I will scoop you from the train station. Drinking until you can't see is the norm tho.

They have Golden Tee 2012 which is fun.

Definitely don't do this. Why would anyone that has a weekend in Chicago want to go way the eff out to Palatine?

So wait you are telling me that they don't film a tv show in the middle of a bar that's packed at all times? I'm sincerely shocked to learn that.
  19. Lou Malnati's is a must too. Several locations within the city.

Otherwise I'd recommend checking out Buckingham Fountain and, if you like improv comedy, go see a show at Second City (on North Ave).

Yeah. I kind of regretted posting this after I did.

My recommendation would be to hit up Kuma's Corner at 2900 W. Belmont for the best burger you have ever had in your life along with a killer choice of beers. The staff has to have tats, pierced, etc. and it's a great place to start the night. All the burgers are named after heavy metal bands.

Not to hate on Kumas corner but right across the street The Square Bar has close to as good of burgers and a far better well rounded menu, better beer selection, not horrific obnoxiously loud music, and way hotter staff, and you don't have to wait in line. Just sayin.

Make sure you hit up the Wrigley bars on Clark, and the bars on Lincoln, and hit up a downtown club, I recommend Crescendo.

  24. Typical Florida Gators fan says he is staying with a girl and no FINN PIC!!!!!!!

  25. Hope you like Mich St. because I swear every other bar in this town is a MSU bar....

  26. Get lunch at Hot Doug's tomorrow. They have all sorts of exotic Hot Doug's. Last time I got a Foie Gras dog and a Boar Dog. Both were just ridiculously delicious (and absurdly filling. one is probably enough).

Check out what they're serving this week as it often varies.

Oh and on the weekends they cook their fries in duck fat. I've never had it but I imagine its delicious.

  27. If you are in RiverNorth, go to Xoco for breakfast. Chilaquiles are awesome hangover food.
  28. Find a portillos! I've been gone 7 years and I crave it every day.

Xoco is also great for lunch. It's a rick bayless place and everything is so good there. It's around dearborn and illinois so should be walkable from almost anywhere in river north.

If you're going out at night I'd head to either lincoln park if you want more sports bar/depaul atmosphere, wicker park if you want weirdos/hipsters, or stay in river north for more a more upscale outing.
