This guy is an idiot and a complete OSU + Big Ten homer.
He just said on the Colin Cowherd's show that he was not in the least embarrassed of Ohio State's schedule. He says that it has put Ohio State in a great position to win the National Championship and that the schedule was made up years ago. Cowherd blasted him and told him every team would love to not schedule anyone imposing and just try to get through the conference, but teams are almost embarrassed to play the season like that. He went on to say that Ohio State only had to get up for 2 games all year Penn St. (don't know about that one) and Michigan (only reason I buy that is the rivalry of it).
Herbstreet called in and said that he wasn't embarrassed to be an Buckeye but was very embarrassed about their schedule.
This is why Spielman will always be doing the 12 noon games of Northwestern vs. Indiana his whole career.... I bet he wonders why his ass doesn't get any different assignments or progress like Herbstreet... When it's your career to commentate and announce college football... then throw out your OBV bias opinion. WAKE UP
Of course Cowherd exampled the SEC and what all these teams are having to fight and claw every week and was it fair that OSU played two... I guess you can blame the Big Ten being down, but what about scheduling Kent St., Akron, or Youngstown St. ?????? That's no one but OSU's mistake.
END RANT -
First of all, you are correct, Spielman is a complete idiot. He is not so much a Big Ten homer, but he is definitely an OSU homer and is only talking up the Big Ten to make OSU look better.
He is already on record saying that OSU has the best defense in the nation, bar none, despite the fact that they have not played any top 25 teams yet (teams that will finish the year top 25 anyway). They are great at shutting down average teams. We'll see how good they look by the end of the year.
My favorite one from last year was how he kept telling us that Antonio Pittman was a 1st round draft pick. Completely ridiculous for a guy that will have ZERO impact in the NFL.
That said, I don't think the scheduling is that big an issue. It's not OSUs fault that they people they scheduled suck. They are trying. They scheduled Texas the 2 years before and USC the next 2 years. I don't know of any power programs that schedule multiple marquee non-conference games, maybe you could argue USC trying to with Nebraska and ND. SEC teams play one big game, if that, and load up on cupcakes and 1-AA just like Big Ten is.
That said, their schedule has turned out to be embarrasing, there is no arguing that, unless you are Spielman. I just don't think they need to do anything differently. The Big Ten usually is like the SEC, with 6 really good teams beating up on each other, it just is not this year. You need to schedule for that appropriately. If you think your conference schedule is going to be challenging, I have no problem with only playing one marquee game in non-conf. Washington turned out to be a bust this year, but it's hard to know that 5 years ago when the game was scheudled. They usually are pretty good. -
I would like to see every team in a "major" conference schedule a home and home series with another team from a "major" conference every year. IT would be great to have one of the first few weekends of the college football year be a SEC - Pac 10 showdown..or something like that. Where each Pac-10 team plays a SEC team on the same weekend...or Big 12, or Big 10, ...or whoever. let the Akrons, Kents, and Eastern Michigans play each other.

I agree with your post, but tOSU gets beat at the Big House this year to set up a USF/BC national title game, which will, in turn, force the NCAA to go to a playoff.
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE -
The Big Ten is not usually like the SEC... but I will say that its down... and it is OSU fault that teams they schedule suck... they knew they sucked that's why they scheduled them ,,, as far as sheduling in the SEC... well just getting through the SEC and the regular schedule you have is enough that I think more SEC teams should put cupcakes during the year.
Tennessee had Cal; Next year goes to UCLA brings in UAB, N. Illinnios, Wyoming - 1 lower tier team
LSU had VaTech (i know they were overrated but they were top 10); they don't add anyone tough next couple of years. Adds Colorado, Appy St. (lol), Houston, and always plays Tulane (cupcake)
Auburn had S. Florida and KState, they add West Virginia next year... they might have the toughest schedule in the nation next year.... look it up
Florida - has FSU every year; adds Miami, Hawaii next year
S. Carolina always has Clemson, adds NC State
Georgia - had Oklahoma State, and adds Arizona State... always plays GA Tech
I will say this OSU does add USC next year but keep Youngstown, add Troy, and Ohio... so at least they stepped out and put their neck on the line as far as out of conference. By looking into 2010 it seems they are trying to schedule 1 out of conference team... this year it happend to be Washington (little effort) and next 2 USC and then Miami (which will be good if they bounce back).... BUT they do surround the rest of the schedule with lower tier teams: Akron, Kent St., Ohio, Army, Toledo. Just seems worst now that Wisconsin was exposed and Penn St. doesn't and hasn't had an offense in some time. Really just leave a shaky Michigan team and Illinios who was playin gover there head... I still like Illinios to be strong in the future.
