I know I cant be the only Reds fan in OT. The good thing about the start of baseball season, is even people like me have hope that our team will be successful. I know in my heart its not true, btu I am lookign forward to the season.
At least the batting average should be better wihtout Dunn and Griff. Jay Bruce is a stud and Joey Votto should emerge this year. I hated the signed of Hernandez, but I guess it is an improvement over Jason Larue.
The pitching should be straight dominant. Voloquez is a stud. Cueto will be good. Harang is the most underrated pitcher out there and hopefully Bronson pitches like he did 3 years ago.
So, is the playoffs completely out of reach? -
yes.
-
who are the reds? this is a real team?
-
The Reds would have serious darkhorse potential if I wasn't 100% sure their ownership would fuck it up. I thought they got rid of Krivsky way too early. (I don't mean Jocketty but the farm system seemed to do well with Krvisky)
Either way the pitching has a lot of potential. I'm still not sold on the lineup though. I like Bruce and Votto but it would really have helped to get a Cliff Floyd like leader for that lineup (i know Cliff FLoyd specifically is a DH but you know what I mean.) My hatred for Wily Taveras once led to an e-fight with Cleeshay so my opinion of him of a leadoff hitter is that he sucks -
I think they're the only team in that divsion with an outside shot of overtaking the Cubs...since they have a bunch of young talent and if literally everything came together they would probably be good...the rest of the teams in the division are just done.
-
Losing Dunn will hurt the team more than you think. He's money for 40 homers a year and a .380~ on-base. Harang was awful last year, and Arroyo will be about the same. My guess is third place is the highest they go, maybe second if they get really lucky, but no one's beating Chicago.
-
You really don't put the Brewers on here?

A healthy Gallardo is better than a healthy Sheets and that lineup can mash. -
Completely agree on Dunn. Now if you can just acknowledge John Smoltz's awesomeness and first ballot HOF credentials, we can agree in baseball threads :)

There Pitching will keep them in games, I just worry if they can score enough to make it matter.
WIll we be in the running? sure if no major injurys. I dont think we make the playoffs. BUt to just be in the running will be a plus. -
yeah smoltz is pretty awesome and should get in. i spoke too soon.

if you can prevent runs, you always have a chance to win. its easier to win a game when you've given up 2-3 runs and have a bad offense than win a game where youve given up 8-9 and have a good offense.
-
Tell that to Randy Johnson a few years ago lol.
-
i got bruce and phillips on my fantasy team, and i just started a franchise wit them in mlb 09. goooooo reds
i might get a fitted now who knows -
I love the Reds, we are winning it all this year. Can't wait til Opening Day when I get my Taveras #3 jersey.
-
The reds do have a decent teaml But my astros always somehow end up in the playoff hunt though at the end of season so I never count them out. This year I really don't see it happening with their weak pitching staff. There's always that possibility though.
-
Votta emerged last year and should have won ROY but he plays in a small market compared to Soto.
Obv Reds homer here though, please Harang pitch like you did in previous years and we have a shot. Truuuuuesyalose, we should hit up some games. Get at me. -
I love the Reds. I'll be there on Opening Day. Ship the World Series to Cincy one time!!!
Also, I 100% disagree w/ those saying Dunn's departure will hurt the team. We absolutely need to get rid of him. This team now has a more balanced offense, and I agree that the pitching could be outstanding, especially if Cueto can hold it together past 5 innings.
GO REDS! -
Any word on Homer? Will he crack the rotation this year? He has soo much potential, but just seems to blwo up when he gets a chance. I hate that they got rid of Freel.
Will be interesting to see if Dickerson is the real deal or not.
I absolutely hate Alex Gonzalez and wish he would get hurt again. -
It's not so much Dunn as much as it is your team is full of way too many free swingers. OBP FTW
-
I'm getting rowdy at the games and nobody better to have than the man who gets rowdy on the basepaths. I picked up a Phillips yesterday, I'm pretty sure I'm ordering a Dusty Baker too.
-
It is just so tilting that every year they start out hot and look like they are the real deal and then right before the All Star break they lose 15 out of 17 consistently.
-
what the fuck does more balance mean? not getting on base as much and not hitting more homers? good luck with that, and have fun with willie taveras. and fwiw, soto deserved ROY because he was a catcher and votto was a first basemen, hence more positional value.

As an Orioles fan I cant thank you enough for taking Ramon Hernandez off our hands. God I hated watching that bastard half-ass every game. He doesnt even play good defense anymore like he used to. As far as the guy who said that you are going to miss Freel hes putting up absolutely terrible numbers this Spring but he looks like hes going to make the team anyway (over some much more deserving young guys) because he can play anywhere and hes owed 4M. Justin Turner, the IF you guys sent us for Hernandez has been a real surprise. Through 20 Grapefruit league games hes batting .342, which is leading the team, and is tied for the team lead in HR's, RBIs, and Total Bases. Granted its spring training and a small sample size but its still nice to see. The biggest hole in our organization is SS and if this guy can play good enough defense to stick at the position that would be great. I would like to see him start the season as the starting SS in AAA to see what he can do.
Either way you guys have a nice young core and you should have fun watching them for the next few years.
Also I realize I wrote this as if I was a member of the team with "us" and "we," which is a really big pet peeve of mine but im too lazy to go back and change it -
Reds will finish 4th behind Cubs, Brew Crew, and Cards.
Edinson Volquez is not as good as some people think. Look at his split stats from last year...he grinded down and the league figured him out. If his walk rate doesn't come down, he's going to be awful again.
They have some talent, but I don't see it coming together. -
Absolutely not.

I hate the Cubs, and this statement is just wrong. For a rookie catcher to withstand the wear and tear of an entire season behind the plate without having any hiccups is phenomenal.
Like someone already said--when numbers are that close, rookie C will win it over rookie 1B every time. I'm not sure it's a positional value thing...just more impressive that a rookie catcher held up so well.
