I need your help OT. My GFs Dad just opened a new restaurant and they asked me to fill in behind the bar. I have pretty basic tastes, beer, whiskey and simple mixers so i dont really know what type of drinks I'll be expected to make aside from shit like Cosmos, Martinis, Manhattans etc
What are some cocktails / shots you like to order when you are out? Any ideas would be a huge help.
If you live near San Mateo, CA its called ALIMANGO, and they serve ridiculous crab asian style. I'll give on OT discount if you come get some drinks, but I cant help w/ food though -
dude, go to bevmo or find some place that has the book or the electronic drink thing that tells you how to make shit. i'd say go electric so the customers don't see you being a n00b when you bust out a book.
and when i go to cali i will visit. i heart crab -
Don't they have a book with all the drinks and what you need to do to mix them behond the bar?
I'd bet you'll get a lot of martini orders, but people are freaks and order weird martini styles so IDK. If I knew what "crab asian" meant I would probably be able to better figure out what kind of drinks are likely to get ordered. -
oh man, crab asian, cooked so many different wayz
-
your gf works with melanie? small world imo
-
make something with gin, lillet and citrus and everyone will think yr hot shit.
-
Oh a book is obv the best way to go but I'm stuck at work for a while so I wanted to prepare myself beforehand
It's crab done asian style. Lots of different preparations but it won't really affect what people ordered liquor wise, more wine wise. -
I live in the bay area but I dont drink and I do eat so your proposed discount helps me none.
best of luck though -

Okay so this is not a proper cocktail, but it's some lush concoction i made up a while back...
1 Smirnoff Ice, 1 Reef Orange, 4 shots of Vodka, 3 shots of Apple Sours, 2 shots of Tropical Sours, 3 shots of Blue Curaçao and some Lemonade - LUSH -
get the electro thing like wowswift said, theres no way OT can teach you to make everything someone is gonna order. Hell you could probably google bartender recipe or something and print out a huge list of shit

When I first started bartending, I didn't want to look like a noob always checking the book, so whenever someone ordered something I didn't know how to make, I'd act like I just ran out of something I needed, then run to the office and hit up http://www.webtender.com/ to find the recipe.
Don't do what I do. You can only say the keg ran out so many times in one night.
As far as what you'll need to know, I'd say learn how to make a good signature drink. I literally had regulars that would come in just for my margaritas. If you can find a drink like that where people will come back to see you in order to get that drink, you're going to make a lot of money.
Also, people love to sound sophisticated when they order basic shit. Here's the most common ones I saw when I bartended:-
Cuba libre = rum and coke

Cape Cod = vodka/cran (with a lime wedge)

Bay Breeze = vodka/cran/pineapple

Sea Breeze = vodka/cran/grapefruit
