  1. I need to get a student loan to pay for school this semester and also other things like a meal plan and books and everything. I think the total cost is a little less than $11,000 for everything.

I figure there is no other way to pay for it other than to get a student loan because I have exhausted all of my financial aid options and government funding options as much as I can.

The catch is I do not have a long enough credit history to be able to get a loan on my own seeing as I have only had credit history for about 15 months, even though my credit is very good. I also have not worked for the past 4 months because I have been playing poker live around here in Florida and actually making about 3x as much money as I ever was at my serving job.

My parents can not co sign for me cause unfortunately they do not have great credit and we were denied. (Definitely sucks) I have had my grandfather co sign for me for my car that I have and other things, but I definitely can not ask him again in this situation because he needs to buy a new house because they are moving back up north and everything. Also I feel bad always having to ask him for things like this. My family along with my grandparents moved down here about 3 years ago so Im not super close with any other relatives that would be able to co sign for me.

My question to everyone that has taken the time to read this is, what can I do. Do I have any options other than becoming a drug dealer or robbing a bank or finding a bag of money on the side of the road. Is there any possible way for me to get a loan on my own, or is there anything at all Im completely lost and cant think of anything thats why Im hoping someone will have some info for me.

    Cliff Notes:
-Need about $11k to pay for school/books/everything this semester
-Pretty sure I can not get one on my own (not long enough credit histroy)
-Parents can NOT co sign for me
-No other relatives can help me pretty much
-I dont want to be a drug dealer
-What can I do so I can go to school????

EDIT: I am a dependant still on my parents. I filled out FAFSA and only got $6300. I talked to the head of financial aid at my school face to face and he was the reason I got $6300 instead of $2300, and im 100% certain Im tapped out.
  2. Try Sallie Mae. That's where I get mine. At least apply and see if you can get one, don't just assume you can't (i only read your cliffs notes)
  3. I did, I got denied, well pre approved with a credit worthy co signer., but i dont have one

  4. This really sucks bro, my only thought is try to work something out through the schools financial aid dept.

How have you financed school before?
  5. Did you apply for FAFSA and workstudy? What were the results of that?
  6. PM Waco Finance.
  7. Agreed^^^ The school may have funding they can help with, that you may not know about. I've heard stories of people getting additional aid from the school because they went and talked with financial aid representative face to face.

Also, are you still living with the parents and considered a dependent?
  8. If he got government funding he already did FAFSA. I was wondering about the workstudy options, too.
  9. I live with my parents and am still considered dependant. I filled out my fafsa and only got 6300 this year total. My mom and I have talked to the head financial aid guy mr lopez numerous times and he actually got my financial aid up from like 2300-6300 cause i talked to him and thats the best we could do.

  18. 500 month for your car bro ... thats 6 of your 11k needed right there if you get rid of it
  19. move into a dorm?
  20. Not an option on some campuses...where do you go to school Bawsten?
  21. FGCU and dorm would be more expensive, and why would I get rid of my car, am i supposed to walk 15 miles to play poker or walk 4 miles back and forth to go to any store or do anything???

Why would I get rid of my car lol

  22. Go and find some resources on employment opportunities... Alot of companies will pay for school in exchange for work... it's a tax write off and pretty much cost them nothing.
  23. Well, if its down to getting rid of your car, or dropping out of college, I would just ditch the car.

I have a truck and I still ride my bicycle everywhere at school.
  24. I cant stress enough how important it is to become a member of a credit union. If you are already a member you will get the loan instantly, if not, find a friend or coworker that is a member so that you can start receiving the benefits. Until then try studentloans.com, thats who I used when I went to school and the money came in 2 weeks and you dont pay until you graduate. Whatever you do, dont get a personal loan (horrible %). Student loans are by far the best loans you could ever get. Hope studentloans.com helps, talk to them on the phone for best results, explain your situation and maybe they will make you pay a slightly higher percentage due to your lack of credit.
  25. you could play poker

EDIT: or transfer to community college

  26. I'm really not trying to be a dick here, but didn't you apply/receive an Astrive student loan in the past 6 months? If I remember correctly, you also made a post asking about what electronic shit you should buy and deposited $500 into pokerstars.

I was the one being "that guy" suggesting you be careful and not spend $$ on shit you didn't need because you would need that money eventually.

Maybe I'm crazy and thinking of somebody else, and if so, then I apologize. But I think I'm thinking of the right person.

Anyways, if you really have been making about 3x as much playing poker than your serving job, then put in a ton of fucking hours playing poker. I mean, you should have a decent amount of $$ saved up assuming your playing within your bankroll. If you are really that good, then go make some money doing it. I've been doing it for 2 years.

If you're not making a lot of money playing poker, then get a job. When you get said job, go back and ask Grandpa to co-sign for you once more and tell him you will give him "X" amount per month towards paying off the loan instead of waiting til you graduate to pay it back. Lots of people work and go to college and have 18 hour days, 5 days a week. It sucks, but I've done it and many others have aswell.

I'm not trying to sound harsh here, but IMO, it's incredibly irresponsible for you to not know how you're gonna pay for next semester. I know it's tough - I grew up poor as fuck and went into college even more poor. But I knew how my shit was getting paid for and made sure it was taken care of. It's not like this semester just snuck up on you like a pop quiz that you didn't know about.

There are lots of options, and lots of good suggestions in this thread, it's now time for you to be pro-active about it.

    Best of luck.
  27. i want all your chips advice whenever i run into a problem!
  28. i just saw a commercial last night for "Astrive" student loans.

google that and check it out.

  29. question: what are you going to school for; what year is this for you; where are you going
  30. My friend was in your exact situation this quarter.

As a couple other posters said, you MUST go to your school's financial aid office and talk with someone there face to face. And if that person doesn't help you, ask for someone else. Do NOT leave without answers.

School's offer more help than it may seem, you just need to put in a little extra effort and accept the ridic interest rates that are about to be thrown in your face.

    Good luck.

edit: Oops just saw your edit. Start flippin burgers, mother fucker.
