Our local firefighters handled the fire when it came into neighborhoods and after listening to the fire scanner all night those mf's are as bad ass as they come too and as professional as could be. Listening to that communication and knowing it was real and not a movie was an experience I have never had and likely will never again have. (Insert *riveting gif*)

Edited By: Willywoo Jun 27th, 2012 at 06:28 PMI ran into a lawyer acquaintance of mine who had a trial today and just found out he lost his house. He did his trial. Don't know if I could have done that. I had a trial today too, but my house is safe. Big difference.Originally Posted by Geoff Moore
I mean, it's not like I'm trying to get out of work to go to vegas or something like that. I feel like he and my other manager could work with me to make it happen but didn't even entertain the idea. His house is almost in the evacuation zone (and probably will be by tomorrow) and I bet his stance changes.
It just sucks that money>other peoples homes/lives
I will say that it is a weird feeling in this town today. Everything off kilter. People pretending to go about their normal lives only there's nothing normal about it. You talk with people and they start crying.
Geoff:
If you need someone to kick your boss in the balls give me a time and place. Sounds like he may need a sick day. -
That sucks. My mom's an attorney in the Springs too and had to close her office off of east Fillmore. No idea what she's doing about her cases.

Is your house in the evac. zone? -
Geoff don't tempt fate, your boss may have inadvertently saved you life. I appreciate your willingness to volunteer. If you do go be careful bro.
-
Yea the affect is far reaching not just the displacement and actual damage, but a whole lots of other things. We are not in or even too close to any evac zones, right now, but as we saw yesterday, that can change in few hours or less.
-
Damn that fire looks like it's getting BIG. Only 5% contained so far. They got a serious fight on their hands.
-
Do most of these people have fire insurance? Or is it a high risk area where you can't really get fire insurance?
-
my heart goes out to all the locals there - must be a terrible thing to go through. Stay safe.
-
I'm not aware of anyone who could not get normal homeowner's insurance that would cover fire. Settling up with the insurance companies may be a different story. Many people do not understand that they may only get depreciated value for their personal property and even if they have replacement coverage, they only get depreciated value unless and until they actually replace the property and you only have a limited period of time to replace it.

Obama doesn't care about white people.
-
actually obama is coming out to tour the fires... kinda surprising, youd think that he would be in dc for the health care ruling.
-
he's going to colorado on friday
-
Can't waste a good crisis.
-
global warming caused this ldo
-
true. I think it's redic. like seeing it is somehow going to change his ideas/plan? "Well I heard there was a big ass fire but once I saw it I said let's...uh..."
kinda like obama playing a shit-ton of golf and going on vacation. wgaf? it's not like the mf potus is unreachable. but I will say it's pretty gross (/standard) when idiots cry about the other guy's potus doing this stuff and then immediately change their position when their guy wins. -
How much is the smore's costing us?
200k?
I seriously see no reason for a president to go touring crap like this just send the cash it would have cost to the area's victims. -
As of this morning USAFA housing blocks were being evacuated and students placed at Fort Carson or into friends homes. Also Space Command has directed that all travel to the Springs be cancelled unless mission critical and even then you're to check that w/e you were going up there for is still on (most likely isn't).
-
Just amazing how far this fire has gone. Im sure most of us figured a few hundred acres at most and it wouldve been handled as usual.
You just dont see a fire get into dense suburban areas. You assume it will be handled by then. Unreal.
Gl down there guys. Hopefully it starts raining there soon, we got some up here today. -
Saw this earlier, that's the AFA stadium in the bottom of the picture. Really puts it into perspective.
Questions for whoever:
How do you even begin to put this out/contain it?
How common is this?
Wouldn't it have been easier to put it out/contain it at the first sign of smoke?
This is morbidly fascinating, stay safe everyone, I'm rooting for the best possible outcome (whatever that may be). -
We have some sick golf courses/campaign/'i didnt let colorado burn because i care about white people who are still employed to write me checks' opps.

Obama loves him some obama. He knows if he didnt people would say bad shit so he gotta come. He pm'ed gw.
Maybe he could rig his planes and choppas for water. Throw some liberals down on the fire. -
From the fires i have seen out here, here is my take.

Its common is rain deprived locations. Fla had a huge fire a couple years ago, obv we have large fires every year out here.
The first problem in trying to put them out, is getting the people on the ground to combat it. It a high wind area, that helps dry the fuel out, once you get 3-20 acres ablaze with high winds, it can spread so fast that it is impossible to stop the spread. I mean think of a 4 alarm fire in a city, that is 4 fire houses (in most cities) combating a fire. What are 4 fire trucks going to do to stop a fire over 20 acres that is spreading fast.
Example, look how fast this fire spreads. how many fire trucks/units do you think it would take to slow that down. Thats why it can take days for the winds to die down before they can make fire breaks and stuff to contain it.
Of course the best was to stop it, is when the fuel burns out cause with out fuel the fire cant keep burning.
Of course SCD could inform us all with much more info than i could ever post. -
7 news just showed how fast a fire like this can blowup. It covers such a big area fastttt.
As soon as the segment ended and they went back to a show called suburgatory which talked about how they mobilized food and supplies for some friends area who lost their house in a FIRE. Then some latina chick says "its very very bad luck where i come from if your house burns down."
I was waiting for the "we interupt this program..." i felt awkward and changed the channel. F abc. -
That video is crazy! I just don't understand how it will get put out at this point since it's what, 0-5% contained, and the radius is rapidly expanding? Do they just hope the wind pushes it towards something that won't burn (rocky mountain side, highway etc)?
-
Yeah, they make fire breaks and hope it doesnt have high winds and jump the breaks. I know out here in the mountains, they have fire breaks already there, for the next fire. Interstates/Highways are always good fire breaks. Rain would also help to dampen the fuel and slow down the burn rate.

Heres a good link.

Yeah, the high park fire up north (like 88,000 acred now?) They just hope it turns back into the area it comes from and run out of fuel. Then they can shore up the perimeters it was heading to. Its one axe and one shovel at a time between planes of slurry and water to put out coals.

Put out a campfire sometime then stir it and see how many coals are still under there and now put that out. Repeat. Now multiply over 15,000 acres. -
This fire laughs at that firebreak. The wind can take hot ash a mile or much more depending on wind. That must be fun chasing down sparks. Ugh.
