  1. one of my 4 pcs has the following problem, which i am really afraid is unfixable.

If you have niether the mouse or the keyboard plugged in, it will start up fine and i can see the screen on windows and it looks normal. but plugging one in after start up it doenst read it, (this is the case with EMachine models much of the time)

Plug in either of those two and try to start it up and i dont even get much past the first few seconds of startup, and never see the windows screen at all. this sucks cause i have many work files on there.

    fixable? or trash

  2. pick up a new mouse and keyboard at best buy. I prefer these:

  3. lol
  4. Computers are kind of like poker, millions of subtle variables thatcould cause millions of subtle problems that slowly destroy yourmachine/game. There is almost no way in hell to tell what yourPC's problem is from the above description. AND, calling peoplegeeks bc they KNOW something is not usually a good way to get theirhelp. I'm no tech by any means, but, again, like poker, I've putin many grueling hours on my own PC's and put forth many hours ofreading so that I'm self sufficient with my own PC. What do I getfor it? The most stable PC of any of my friends/family AND thethrill of fixing everyone else's problems. What are theirproblems caused by? Usually their own ignorance. What infodo they give when a problem pops up? None. bc they'reignorant re: computer knowledge.

    My advice:

read a book or find someone within driving distance who knows whatthey're doing and hope to god they have the patience to help you. This could be anything from a faulty driver installation to aworm/trojan issue, to absolutely beyond repair hard drive and/ormotherboard issue. You, most likely, won't get a complete walkthrough to a solution by posting here on P5. Try microsoft.cominstead, there's much more useful knowledge floating on microsoft'sforums than this poker forum.

    peace out.
  5. well its not a worm cause its never been used for internet purposes.

also, not once did it cross my mind that i would deeply offend someone using the term geek. in fact i was talking mainly to the LITERAL geek squad people who are a company, (best buy has this and there are a few who work for Geek Squad here on this forum, they are very cool to work with when ive had to go there and use them) , so no i wasnt demeaning (sp) anyone lol

are you ghey? or just that overdramatic? seriously. you expect people to infer you were speaking of a unique company called "geek squad" when you use a half century old nicname in a title? You're saying any time we hear the word "geek" nowadays we're supposed to assume that it's in reference to the company? Supposed to assume that the person MEANT to say "Geek Squad?" GTFO. YFOS.

    back to the REAL issue:

    it's not a worm.

that's ONE extra piece of info (it isn't on the net presently); but, we're still nowhere near where we need to be.

Has it EVER been on the net? When's the last time it worked? What were you doing? This is why I'm sayin you should just get someone outside this little cyber reality to take a look, perhaps bring a new mouse/keyboard in to try it out, etc...

have you checked the pins at the end of the mouse/keyboard cable? sometimes they snap off and render the unit inoperable and cause conflict with your hardware, which can lead to system crashes and faults.
  7. Sounds like it might be a motherboard issue. The problem is, that to try and diagnose the cause, you need to access the bios to see if you can force it to ignore errors on bootup. Without a keyboard you can't get into the bios. Let me think about this for a little bit. Worse case scenario, you can get your files by installing your hard drive in another system and copying them. I love a challenge. I'm assuming you have a ps/2 mouse and keyboard. The quick check is to try plugging in a KNOWN GOOD mouse and keyboard and see if it boots.
  8. Use a USB Keyboard and mouse. I agree with the motherboard diagnosis. It's not acknowledging the those ports. You can buy an adapter to convert the existing plugs to USB. Many newer keyboards come with them included. Someone you know has one or more.

If you like futzing with things (with 4 machines I gather you do) you can probably isolate and fix the problem. Replace the motherboard. Whole thing. Brand new, vroom vroom. That will surely fix it if the issue isn't the peripheral itself. Given both are faulty, it's probably not the input mechanism.

What is the replacement cost and how much do you value your time? That's how you decide if it's trash or not.
  9. ty computerb,

i tried another mouse and same thing. I prob shoulda given more info as well so ill take fault for that. also it happened most likely because once during a shutdown, it wasnt shutting down properly, so i just pushed in the turn on/off button in for 5 seconds and shut it down manually, in which it then tried to restart and my dumbass self (during the first 5 -10 seconds of the restart) once again pushed the off button in for 5 seconds, disrupting the start up, which was very dumb of me. i think since then its never worked. .... user error most def.

edit - ty for the idea of taking out the drive and saving the files that way. ill PM you tomorrow about how the best way to do that would be. you the man.
