Hoping someone who knows something about computers on this forum can help me out.
My external HD is on the fritz, and since I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computers, I have no idea exactly why or how to fix it. All I know is that at first I kept getting an "I/O" error when I tried to access my external, and everytime I plugged it in it would freeze my computer until I unplugged it.
I tried reinstalling the drivers to no effect.
I was reading on a forum someone who was having a similar problem when I used google, and someone suggested that he delete some registry keys or something like that. So I ran regedit.exe from the command prompt and deleted the recommended stuff, but now I think I've done more harm then good because -- despite having working drivers installed -- my computer won't recognize the external HD at all. At least it's not freezing my computer anymore!
I tried using it on my other computer, same problem. What the hell is wrong with this thing?
Any help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks. If you need any more information just ask in the thread and I'll try to provide you with whatever I know. -

check jumper settings?
I honestly don't know what that means or how to do that. Details? -
USB2 harddrive?
what version of windows you running?
Can you feel the harddrive spinning when it's turned on.
My educated rough shot guess is the physical disk is toast inside the enclousure (which is still working). -
I just saw this thought this thread had died.
Yes I plug the HD in via USB2 cord.
I'm running Vista Home Basic.
I can feel it spinning. It seems to be working fine physically, just that this computer won't recognize it and the other computer does recognize it but it freezes it when I try to access the HD until I unplug it.
I mean even if it's dead is there any way to get the data off of it? I can afford a new hard drive but a years worth of archived hand histories is irreplacable.
