    SALE, England, March 30 (UPI) -- A 66-year-old British woman was fined and ordered to wear an ankle monitor as punishment for selling a<span>goldfish</span> to a 14-year-old.

    Joan Higgins, 66, owner of Majors Pet Shop in Sale, England, was fined $1,506, ordered to wear an ankle monitor and given a seven-week curfew as punishment for selling a goldfish to a 14-year-old boy sent into the store by police on a test buy, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

    A 2006 law prohibits the sale of <span>live </span><span>fish</span> to children under the age of 16.

    Higgins' son, Mark, 47, was fined $1,300 and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service.

    "I think it's a farce. What gets me so cross is that they put my mum on a tag -- she's nearly 70, for goodness sake," Mark Higgins said. "She's a great grandma so she won't be able to babysit a new born baby. You would think they have better things to do with their time and money."

    "The council sent the 14-year-old into us. It is hard to tell how old a lad is these days. He looked much older than 14," he said.

    I participated in a cigarette buy like this. Left me feeling dirty, I'd go in and tell them to card me while I was buying.

    Kid was like 9-10 IIRC, 16 is probably a bit on the cautious side.

    Doubt you can die from swallowing live goldfish... these guys did it on the reg (harvard students)

    huh. makes sense. I was thinking it was probably an inland game and fishery type of rule to make sure non-native species ended up in the water. go add this to the interesting facts thread.

    I heard about this on the tv earlier and thought it sounds crazy but then I thought hmmm... maybe my friend wasn't the only crazy bastard that decided to go buy a goldfish 1 summer day just to kill it. He talked about it for a few days going through different ways to kill it like boiling it and strapping it to a firework. Must be a popular thought for kids in the UK. Im sure we were only 13 or 14 back then. He actually bought 1 but ended up not having the balls to kill it and released into the local park lake... where im sure it would've died anyway.

    EDIT: Probably more like 11 or 12 year old but whatever.
